Hi dnssd,
For a while now, we've flirted with the idea of re-chartering. Tom P has do=
ne a great job of collecting some of the topics that could be included in s=
uch a re-charter.
I'd like to see if we can get a bit of discussion on these topics on this l=
ist (hopefully with firm commitments to do work).

The current charter is at: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/charter-ietf-dn=
ssd/

Topics to consider (if you have others, you're invited to propose them; and=
feel free to expand and clarify what you think these might/should mean):
[These topics are presented to start thoughts flowing. If a topic gets trac=
tion, we can break it off into its own thread.]

1. Specifically capture and address homenet requirements around DNS-SD.

2. (Re)focus and scope privacy efforts. Emphasize privacy & data integrity.=
(Future solutions should provide mechanisms to ensure services are not tam=
pered with and queries/responses for services can be encrypted for privacy.=
)

3. Define behavior of an DNS Update Proxy (does this entail more than what'=
s in https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-srp-02, or does the chart=
er need something to cover the srp draft?).

4. Emphasize Unicast for "MANY Discovery" (Multicast is acceptable for "ANY=
Discovery" but missed responses can't be detected for "MANY Discovery" so =
solutions that require "MANY Discovery" should transition to unicast).

5. Finding things near me / finding things associated with me (see https://=
datatracker.ietf.org/meeting/102/materials/slides-102-dnssd-recharter-01; B=
luetooth Wi-Fi proximity? credentialed domain? independent of attached netw=
ork?)

The conflict with pearg is bad -- working on privacy of discovery
implies also working on general privacy issues in pearg.

A draft agenda for the joint homenet/dnssd session is posted now. To save y=
ou the trouble of unnecessary clicking here is what it says:

Administrivia and Status Update: Homenet Chair slides (5 minutes)
Homenet Naming architecture update (including hacking): Michael Richardson =
/ Daniel Migault (10 minutes)
HNCP evolution: Ray Hunter / Daniel Migault (15 minutes

-----------------------------

Administrivia and Status Update: dnssd Chair slides (5 minutes)
[hopefully notetaker and jabber scribe will be the same]
Service Registration (Ted Lemon or Stuart Cheshire, 15 minutes)
  * draft-ietf-dnssd-srp
Discovery Relay (Ted Lemon or Stuart Cheshire, 5 mins)
  * draft-ietf-dnssd-mdns-relay
Privacy (TBD) [this is complicated by conflict with pearg]
Summary of on-list re-charting discussion (Chairs - 5 minutes)
Conclusion (Chairs - 5 minutes)

Of course, the pearg conflict is under discussion to potentially move the p=
rivacy discussion.

Hi DNSSD enthusiasts,

Since there was interest in publishing the DNSSD Privacy Requirements work
at
our latest DNSSD face-to-face meeting, we're starting a Working Group Last
Call to see if we have consensus to advance the document. The working group
last call will last for 3 weeks until 2019-22-25, and we will discuss it
during the DNSSD meeting at IETF 106 in Singapore. We invite members of the
community to read the latest draft and comment on list before our in-person
meeting.

https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq-02

Thanks,
David

I=E2=80=99m planning to be at the IETF 106 Hackathon. At previous =
Hackathons Ted Lemon has been my hacking companion, but right now Ted is =
too busy with other work to make it to IETF this time. If you=E2=80=99re =
interested in collaborating on some DNSSD coding on Saturday at the =
Hackathon, please let me know.

I=E2=80=99ve offered to host some hands-on =E2=80=9CCode Clinic=E2=80=9D =
coding sessions at the Hackathon, to show people how to take their =
existing code where a human user enters a hostname or IP address, and =
enhance it by adding service discovery using DNSSD APIs.

If you know some software that could benefit from having some service =
discovery added, please evangelize this opportunity to them. Here is the =
description as currently listed on the Hackathon wiki:

<https://trac.ietf.org/trac/ietf/meeting/wiki/106hackathon#DNSSD>

> Service Discovery Code Clinic. If your application has any place where =
a human user enters a hostname or IP address, come by for hands-on help =
updating your application to use network service discovery to improve =
that user experience. We can help you do this using the APIs available =
on Windows, Android, Linux, macOS, and iOS. If you=E2=80=99re using =
another platform, we can help you port the open source mDNSResponder =
code to that platform too. Please email Stuart Cheshire with =E2=80=9CCode=
Clinic=E2=80=9D in the subject line to arrange a time slot.

I=E2=80=99ve also volunteered to give a tutorial, 13:45-14:45 on Sunday, =
on the same topic. As above, if you know some software that could be =
improved by adding service discovery, please evangelize this tutorial to =
people you think could benefit from learning more about this. The full =
description is attached below.

Title: Service Discovery for IP applications

Abstract: If your application has any place where a human user enters a =
hostname or IP address, or uses broadcast to discover the address of a =
device, come to this tutorial to learn how you can use network service =
discovery to improve that user experience.

Description:

Many IP applications today are still configured manually. Sometimes a =
human user needs to enter a hostname or IP address in a configuration =
file or user-interface field. Sometimes software will use its own ad hoc =
broadcast-based discovery mechanism to learn the IP address of the peer =
with which it wishes to communicate. In both cases, using the IETF=E2=80=99=
s standard DNS-based service discovery mechanism, defined in RFC 6763, =
provides better user experience and more efficient use of the network.

In this tutorial we will cover the APIs available on Windows, Android, =
Linux, macOS, and iOS, that facilitate the three fundamental operations =
of DNS-based service discovery: Offer, Enumerate, and Use.

Sometimes the =E2=80=9Cuse=E2=80=9D step may be performed multiple =
times, as in the case of printing on a network printer. In other cases, =
the =E2=80=9Cenumerate=E2=80=9D and =E2=80=9Cuse=E2=80=9D steps are =
performed just once, for the purpose of one-time provisioning and =
configuration of a new device added to the network.

This tutorial covers both local service discovery using Multicast DNS, =
defined in RFC 6762, and wide area service discovery using conventional =
unicast DNS, both via manual configuration of DNS servers (as is done =
for printing at IETF meetings) and via automation tools like a Discovery =
Proxy (defined in draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid).

For those arriving early, we will be holding service discovery =E2=80=9Cco=
de clinic=E2=80=9D hours at the IETF 106 Hackathon on Saturday. Come by =
for hands-on help updating your application to use network service =
discovery.

Daniel Kaiser asked me if I may read draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq-02 and
write some comments and I feel honoured to do it. I do research in the
area of system and network security and privacy and teach computer
networks and security at a University of Applied Sciences in
Germany. However, I have no deep knowledge about DNS-SD.

Comments:

,---- page 3, 4, and 5
| ASCII-Art diagrams
`----

I recognized only later that the person with the hat is the
adversary. Maybe it is useful to include some labels like "client 1",
"client 2", and "adversary" to avoid any confusion.

,---- page 3
| The adversary will be listening to the network traffic, trying to
| identify the visitors' devices and their activity. Identifying devices
| leads to identifying people, either just for tracking people or as a
| preliminary to targeted attacks.
`----

If the adversary is listening to the network traffic, he/she will find
out if a client sends a print job to the printer. This argument is a bit
unclear to me.

,---- whole draft
| identity of the client.
`----

What is the identity of a client? IP address?

,---- page 5
| In addition to tracking the identity of the owner of the devices, the
| adversary is interested by the characteristics of the devices, such as
| type, brand, and model. Identifying the type of device can lead to
| further attacks, from theft to device specific hacking. The combination
| of devices worn by the same person will also provide a "fingerprint" of
| the person, allowing identification.
`----

An adversary that passively capture network traffic and an adversary
that actively generates fingerprints of a device are quite
different. IMHO, there should be a dedicated thread model section before
you describe the service discovery scenarios. What is the adversary
capable of and what do you include in the requirements and what is out of
scope.

,---- page 8
| 2. Further, even if the application layer does not protect privacy, it
| is hard to record and analyse the unicast traffic (which most
| applications will generate) compared to just listening to the multicast
| messages sent by DNS-SD/mDNS.
`----

This argument is a bit unclear to me. Why is it hard to record and
analyse unicast traffic? It depends on the network of course. Again, it
would be useful to have thread model section. There are various attacks
to like CAM table overflow and Person-in-the-Middle (PitM) attacks that
would make that possible. Yes, it would be harder, but not impossible.

,---- page 9
| 4. Security Considerations
`----

I'm missing considerations about Distributed Reflective Denial of
Service (DRDoS) attacks or amplification attacks. If we are talking
about general security requirements, I think it should be included. In
case of a UDP protocol, a requirement should be there the sender is
verified or the reply is as small as possible to avoid amplification.

,---- page 10
| 4.3. Resistance to Dictionary Attacks
`----

I don't understand this security consideration. It is clear to me what a
dictionary attack is, but in what sense is this relevant for DNS-SD? Do
I miss already a possible privacy protection mechanisms that is missing?
Even if there are some sensitive information that were hashed to protect
the privacy, is a dictionary attack really a threat? In case of a
password, you have the password, which means you have access to a
website or a device. But for sensitive information? In that case it
would be better to encrypt the whole traffic.

,---- page 13
| 3. DNS-SD messages transmitted by clients MUST NOT contain linkable
| identifiers that allow tracing client devices.
`----

Does this include the fingerprinting attack mentioned before?

,---- page 13
| 6.2. Private Server Requirements
`----

Where are the requirements for the public server?

,---- page 13
| 2. Servers MUST use privacy options available at lower layers, and for
| example avoid publishing static IPv4 or IPv6 addresses, or static IEEE
| 802 MAC addresses.
`----

Sure, one could use MAC address randomization or the temporary IPv6
address when the IPv6 privacy extension is enabled. But what about IPv4?
I don't see any way to avoid publishing the IPv4 address. Sure, one
could use IP spoofing, but this highly depends on the network and would
break [BCP 38]. Or do I misunderstand something?

General comment
=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D

I have the feeling that the whole document is mainly focused on mDNS and
less about DNS. If this document is intended to be privacy and security
requirements about DNS-SD in general, I think DNS should be more
highlighted in the document.

Apart from these points, I approve of advancing the dnssd requirements
draft. Thanks for writing the draft and shedding light on this important
issue!

Best Regards

Yes, that's plural: sessions.
We went ahead and requested the Monday 18:10-19:10 time slot for dnssd priv=
acy topics.
Because we now have this other hour, we will delay the start of the first s=
ession until 14:30.
There are still unhappy people, I know. But hopefully this is workable. Com=
ments and complaints are, well, not unwelcome. But I won't be upset if I do=
n't hear any (more).
Barbara

Here are highlights of the updated agenda (which has also been uploaded to =
datatracker):

IETF 106 - Homenet + DNSSD Agenda
13:30-15:30 Monday Afternoon session I (only 14:30 - 15:30 will be used)
18:10-19:10 Monday Afternoon session III (dnssd topics, only)
November 18, 2019

13:30 - 14:30 No Agenda for the first hour. The meeting will start at 14:30=
to minimize overlap with other, simultaneous sessions.

Starting at 14:30:

Administrivia and Status Update: dnssd Chair slides (5 minutes)
Service Registration and roadmap (Ted Lemon or Stuart Cheshire, 15 minutes)
  * draft-ietf-dnssd-srp
Discovery Relay (Ted Lemon or Stuart Cheshire, 5 minutes)
  * draft-ietf-dnssd-mdns-relay
Rechartering discussions (led by chairs, 5 minutes)
-----------------------------
Starting at 15:00:

Administrivia and Status Update: homenet Chair slides (5 minutes)
 - [hopefully notetaker and jabber scribe will be the same]
Homenet Naming architecture update (including hacking): Michael Richardson =
/ Daniel Migault (10 minutes)
HNCP evolution: Ray Hunter / Daniel Migault (15 minutes)
-----------------------------
Starting at 18:10

Administrivia: (5 minutes)
 - identify notetaker and jabber scribe for this session
 - recap of first session
Privacy topics/drafts (Christian Huitema, 20 minutes)
Conclusion (Chairs - 5 minutes)

Hi,

I've read your draft https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-srp-02

In general, this draft is very useful and well-written. I can see how it
would integrate with Homenet, and support it.

Comments:

Section 2

/ If the DNS
Search List option contains more than one domain name, it MUST NOT be
used.  If neither option is available, the Service Registration
protocol is not available on the local network./

Q. This covers if one source contains multiple names in the DNSSL, but
what if the different sources of <domain> contain conflicting domains
e.g. DHCPv4 option is inconsistent with RA?

Q. Any special treatment needed? IPv6 preferred?

/Anycasts are sent using UDP unless TCP is required due to the size of
the update./

Q. Would a compliant server implementation have to support both?

Q. Why only UDP and TCP transport, and not DNS over TLS ((7858) or DNS
over HTTPS (8484) for example?
Is this draft not actually just transport agnostic?

/It is the responsibility of a Constrained-Node Network supporting SRP to
provide appropriate anycast routing to deliver the DNS updates to the
    appropriate server./

Q. Do you want to add any additional text to constrain/filter the
anycast scope?
Would we want anycast traffic leaving the home? [privacy/security]
Recommend setting a max TTL?
ULA anycast rather than GUA?
Further references to RFC7723 and detailed handling of the anycast address?
Does the assignment have to be made in a standards track document or
informational?

Section 2.1

/The Host Description records for a service are a KEY RR, used to
claim exclusive ownership of the service registration, and one or
more RRs of type A or AAAA, giving the IPv4 or IPv6 address(es) of
the host where the service resides./

Q. Does publishing a A or AAAA Host Description RR automatically mean
that the SRP server will create an associated PTR RR for the reverse
address-> name, does the client have to create this explicitly itself,
or don't you care?

Section 2.2

/ SRP server handle rewriting that to a different domain if necessary./

How an SRP server re-writes is out of scope?
TTL should also be copied in the rewriting? [include a forward pointer
to 2.5]
How to handle name clashes if there are multiple SRP servers on
different technology segments re-writing to one common domain?
SRP server acts as a proxy when re-writing, and if necessary, defends
the existing name that has been learned from the other segments? (2.3.1)

Section 2.3.1
What if the SIG0 matches, but the RR's don't e.g. if a node moves
segments and changes IPv6 address? Over-write of existing records is
explicitly allowed or denied?
Or does the client need to explicitly delete it's old RR's itself first?
[include a forward pointer to section 2.4.2]

Any differences in how RCODE is specified compared to RFC2136?

Dumb question: Are you overloading port 53?
Is there any potential for confusion or conflict between an SRP server
(DNS Update Lite) and a DNS server that supports full DNS update?
SRP server only ever listens on the anycast address?

      Hi,

I've read this draft
https://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq-02 and find it
useful for raising awareness of security issues regarding browsing and
resolving services.

I only have one comment.

The draft specifically mentions DNS-SD [RFC6763] over mDNS [RFC6762] as
the target for the discussion.

Question: Is [RFC7558] explicitly excluded from the scope of this draft,
implicitly included, or should be explicitly included?

There are similarities, but there are also differences (on wired
networks, and where the message potentially traverses multiple networks)

e.g. section 6.6 of RFC7558 states /it should be possible to configure
one or more "safe" zones in which mobile devices may automatically
register their services."/ as a potential mitigation.

I think this should be clarified, as there is some overlap.

Apple Legal came though for us and formally submitted the IPR Disclosure =
below.

This echoes the previous similar IPR Disclosure from Apple, which was =
submitted for Long-Lived Queries over a decade ago =
<https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/1234/ =
<https://datatracker.ietf.org/ipr/1234/>>.

Since DNS Push was designed as the spiritual successor of Long-Lived =
Queries it is appropriate that this IPR should be offered under the same =
terms, since that was the intent of the original LLQ IPR Disclosure. The =
draft name changed, and the transport protocol changed from =
something-over-UDP to TCP, but the overall purpose of DNS Push is to be =
a better version of LLQ.

Hopefully this should not come as a big surprise to anyone who=E2=80=99s =
been following this work.

The IESG has approved the following document:
- 'DNS Push Notifications'
  (draft-ietf-dnssd-push-25.txt) as Proposed Standard

This document is the product of the Extensions for Scalable DNS Service
Discovery Working Group.

The IESG contact persons are Éric Vyncke and Suresh Krishnan.

A URL of this Internet Draft is:
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-dnssd-push/

Technical Summary

The Domain Name System (DNS) was designed to return matching records
efficiently for queries for data that is relatively static. When
those records change frequently, DNS is still efficient at returning
the updated results when polled, as long as the polling rate is not
too high. But there exists no mechanism for a client to be
asynchronously notified when these changes occur. This document
defines a mechanism for a client to be notified of such changes to
DNS records, called DNS Push Notifications.

Working Group Summary

The significant thing was the initial version of the draft had both protocols
and process. The decision was made after discussion with DNSOP, to split
this work into a separate draft and the protocol work into
  draft-ietf-dnsop-session-signal, which is now RFC8490.

Document Quality

The documents is of good quality. There currently is some non-published
implementations. The reviews on this document were vigorous and thorough.

Personnel

  Document Shepherd is Tim Wicinski.
  Area Director is Éric Vyncke.

IANA Note

New entries to be added in two existing registries.

RFC Editor Note

This document is part of C367 (where draft-sekar-dns-llq will be added as soon as the IESG agrees that there is no conflict) and the ideal RFC ordering should be:
1) RFC n is draft-sekar-dns-llq Independent Stream (Informational)
2) RFC n+1 is draft-ietf-dnssd-push (successor to LLQ) this document
3) RFC n+2 is draft-ietf-dnssd-hybrid (depends on draft-ietf-dnssd-push) already in C367 for months
