Hi Daniel, Christian,

I am writing a shepherd's review of draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq in order to
submit it to the IESG.

Please both reply-all to this email stating whether you are aware of any
Intellectual Property Rights related to draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq. (Details
of the IETF policies on this topic can be found in BCP 78 and BCP 79).

To everyone else in the WG, please reply only if you are aware of any IPR.

Thanks,
David

I am not aware of IPR directly related to draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq.

The draft lists a set of requirements for performing private discovery,
and I am not aware of patent applications or other IPR applying
generally to this problem statement. On the other hand, I am aware of
attempts to find and patent solution to related problems. I am listed as
an inventor on related patents filed by my former employer, Microsoft:
"Gateway Advertisement in a Wireless Mesh" (US Patent Application
#20170034773) and "DISCOVERING AND PROTECTING DATA STREAMS IN MULTI-PATH
COMMUNICATION ENVIRONMENTS" (US Patent Application #20180152976). I do
not believe that this patents directly apply to draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Extensions for Scalable DNS Service Discovery WG of the IETF.

Title : DNS-SD Privacy and Security Requirements
        Authors : Christian Huitema
                          Daniel Kaiser
	Filename : draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq-04.txt
	Pages : 19
	Date : 2020-01-28

Abstract:
DNS-SD (DNS Service Discovery) normally discloses information about
devices offering and requesting services. This information includes
host names, network parameters, and possibly a further description of
the corresponding service instance. Especially when mobile devices
engage in DNS Service Discovery at a public hotspot, serious privacy
problems arise. We analyze the requirements of a privacy respecting
   discovery service.

The IETF datatracker status page for this draft is:

A diff from the previous version is available at:

Please note that it may take a couple of minutes from the time of submission
until the htmlized version and diff are available at tools.ietf.org.

The IESG has received a request from the Extensions for Scalable DNS Service
Discovery WG (dnssd) to consider the following document: - 'DNS-SD Privacy
and Security Requirements'
  <draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq-04.txt> as Informational RFC

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits final
comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
last-call@ietf.org mailing lists by 2020-02-12. Exceptionally, comments may
be sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the beginning
of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

DNS-SD (DNS Service Discovery) normally discloses information about
devices offering and requesting services. This information includes
host names, network parameters, and possibly a further description of
the corresponding service instance. Especially when mobile devices
engage in DNS Service Discovery at a public hotspot, serious privacy
problems arise. We analyze the requirements of a privacy respecting
   discovery service.

Reviewer: Bob Halley
Review result: Ready

I am an assigned INT directorate reviewer for draft-ietf-dnssd-prireq. These
comments were written primarily for the benefit of the Internet Area Directors.
Document editors and shepherd(s) should treat these comments just like they
would treat comments from any other IETF contributors and resolve them along
with any other Last Call comments that have been received. For more details on
the INT Directorate, see http://www.ietf.org/iesg/directorate.html.

The draft does a very good job explaining the problem space and its
complexities. The guidance it offers for future extensions is sound.

/Bob

P.S. I liked the ASCII art.
