Subject: Ftp-WG: status of rfc 2228

hello all,

i'm new to the list.

very recently, i've taken an interest in the status of rfc 2228 as i wish to implement some means of user authentication, integrity protection, and optional data encryptiong to an existing ftpd implementation.

i was wondering if anyone knew which ftp implementations currently support the proposed security extensions.

and finally, are there any thoughts on combining the control connection and data connection? in my eyes, this would eliminate the bounce attack and make ftp less of a problem for nat'd connections and firewalls.

thanks for any feedback

Sorry, no reply from me on that part, perhaps someone else might
know of some.

  | and finally, are there any thoughts on combining the control connection
  | and data connection?

No, no thoughts, and no chance. That would require revising FTP
until it was close enough identical to HTTP. We already have HTTP,
we don't need a variation of it running on a different port and called
FTP. If the dual connection part of FTP means that problems are caused
that limit where FTP is permitted, then perhaps FTP will eventually die
out. That certainly has not happened yet.

There are many implementations supporting

  GSSAPI-Kerberos 5
  Kerberos 4
  Secure Remote Password
  Transport Layer Security v1

Kermit <http://www.kermit-project.org/> is a FTP client which supports
all of the above.
We have a partial list of servers at
<http://www.kermit-project.org/ftpd.html>

If you want a secure file transfer solution which requires only a single
channel, then
you want RFC 2839, Internet Kermit Service.
<ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc2839.txt>
and <http://www.kermit-project.org/iksd.html>

Yes. Because it was never adopted by the FTP-WG as a working group item
and the former Security AD who was supposed to handle the Last Call work
never found the time AND is no longer an AD.

The fastest way would be for the Working Group Chair to agree there is
WG consensus
for the draft to be a product of the working group, and then for there
to be a
WG Last Call issued.

As a product of a working group, the draft would be required to be
processed in
a timely manner by the Area Directors responsible for the working group.

Well, our track record of getting the AD's to do anything is not
great. The MLST proposal which is what started this group anyway
about 7 years ago still has not made it to draft. I've submitted
it several times.

As far as 2228, it was handled by the security working group
I believe. It certainly was not handled through this one. I would
think that group should try and advance it.

Paul:

There is no "FTP Security" Working Group. The only FTP related working
group is the FTP Extensions" Working Group.

Right, I realize that. I was saying that that draft was the
product of another working group, evidently the Network Working
Group (according to the RFC). I remember it coming up for=20
discussion in our group briefly when it was submitted for
proposed standard. By then the work was complete in the other
group.

That said, I don't mind submitting it from this group to
advance it, if their is consensus. Someone should contact the
authors and see if there are any revisions which should be=20
made. The same question should go to any implementors.

So what does the following mean?

"The IESG has approved following document:

"- 'Extensions to FTP '
" <draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-16.txt> as a Proposed Standard"

I thought that meant it was on its way to RFC-hood.

> As far as 2228, it was handled by the security working group

Ignore the subject line - we moved on from there to specific kinds of
RFC2228-compatible FTP extensions, and specifically,
draft-murray-auth-ftp-ssl-12.txt, "Securing FTP with TLS" [which I really
hope will become known as simply "ftps"].

It doesn't appear that this particular document is under any WG's aegis.
Maybe it should be brought under ours?

Alun.

Paul,

I think we have a little misunderstanding here. The discussion skipped
smartly from RFC 2228 to the FTP-over-SSL draft
(draft-murray-auth-ftp-ssl-12.txt), by virtue of a message from Alun Jones
which hasn't arrived here yet. RFC 2228 is, as you say, a standards-track
document, and there's nothing more to do unless someone wants to advance it
to Draft Standard. The SSL draft is another story, and it's that story
which Jeff was trying to clarify.

Right, I realize that. I was saying that that draft was the
product of another working group, evidently the Network Working
Group (according to the RFC). I remember it coming up for
discussion in our group briefly when it was submitted for
proposed standard. By then the work was complete in the other
group.

That said, I don't mind submitting it from this group to
advance it, if their is consensus. Someone should contact the
authors and see if there are any revisions which should be
made. The same question should go to any implementors.

I've forwarded your request to the author of
draft-murray-auth-ftp-ssl-12.txt.

I think you'll find that the document has been stable for the past year or
more, and has been implemented by numerous implementors. The web site
http://www.ford-hutchinson.com/~fh-1-pfh/ftps-ext.html has an impressive
list of implementations, in client, server and proxy form, as well as a
"Wiki" link, which essentially allows public comment.

The draft in question is currently an individual submission of Paul V
Ford-Hutchinson
<paulfordh@uk.ibm.com> who would like nothing more than to see this
draft get approval.

If you send an e-mail to the Internet-Draft editor indicating that the
draft should now be considered a working group item, it will be
relabeled as such.

I have been trying for years to get the Security ADs to process it as an
individual submission. They are just too overloaded with work to deal
with it. It ends up in a pile. Part of the reason that can happen is
that individual submissions unlike working group items are not tracked
by the IESG work flow system in the same way.

It's not helped by the fact that there's drafts (Internet Draft Documents,
ietf-draft-*.txt) and drafts (RFCs that document Draft Standards).

If you ask me, it's all daft.

But yes, Paul, what I'm looking for (and I hope others will support) is to
turn draft-murray-auth-ftp-ssl-12.txt into an RFC as soon as possible - if
that is best achieved by having this WG adopt it and push for its inclusion,
then I'd very much like that. Rough consensus and working code - the large
number of interoperating implementations out there should be enough to
establish both of these.

Alun.

  | So what does the following mean?
  |
  | "The IESG has approved following document:
  |
  | "- 'Extensions to FTP '
  | " <draft-ietf-ftpext-mlst-16.txt> as a Proposed Standard"
  |
  | I thought that meant it was on its way to RFC-hood.

It is, the RFC Editor is working on it now. So far, the only editor
changes have been 2 updated references (ones that have been replaced
since they were included in the doc ...) and the deletion of the
reference of rfc1034 (DNS) which was only ever referred to from the
text about the HOST command, and which I should have found and deleted
when the HOST command text was removed...

Paul, if you want your affiliation or contact details updated, right now
would be the time to make that happen!

  | Right, I realize that. I was saying that that draft was the
  | product of another working group, evidently the Network Working
  | Group (according to the RFC).

This is getting way off the topic now, but the "Network Working Group"
that appears in RFCs is (was) the body of which the IETF was a part
(network working group of DARPA I believe - or something like that).

That string appears in all RFCs, and these days is just a meaningless
acknowledgement of the historical roots.

</FONT><FONT FACE="Garamond"><P>* Patrulhamento...</P>
<B><P>* Tem&aacute;ticas</P>
</B><P>Diante deste cen&aacute;rio e visando alertar a opini&atilde;o p&uacute;blica cat&oacute;lica, o livro acima citado procura debater as seguintes tem&aacute;ticas:</P>
