Folks involved in the MMUSIC WG,

the HIP WG is developing a NAT traversal solution that is based on NICE:

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-rosenberg-mmusic-ice-nonsip-00.txt

This means that we depend on the NICE draft to have a working NAT
traversal solution for HIP. However, from the presentation of this draft
in the last IETF, it is not clear to us whether or not the MMUSIC WG is
going to work on this draft.

The HIP WG would like to encourage the MMUSIC WG to work on this
specification, since we need it. If the MMUSIC WG decides not to do so,
the HIP WG will most likely copy/paste the contents of the NICE draft in
our NAT traversal spec. However, we believe that having a stand-alone
NICE specification can be useful for protocols other than HIP that will
decide to use ICE for NAT traversal in the future.

A clarification of the status of this work in the MMUSIC WG would be
appreciated.

Folks,

as you know, HIP has gotten a lot of attention from people building 
overlays (e.g., the P2PSIP WG folks). It seems that we are missing a set 
of specifications describing how to build HIP-based overlays. With those 
specifications in place, the set of people interested in HIP could grow 
dramatically. As we mentioned in our last face-to-face meeting, we would 
like to ask our area directors to charter us to do that work.

In principle, we would need the following deliverables:

o Framework to build HIP-based overlays.
o How to generate ORCHIDs from a Peer ID defined by a peer protocol.
o How to carry certificates in the base exchange.
o Lightweight messages to carry upper-layer data.

Additionally, we may need to work on the following items at some point:

o Something related to delegation.
o Use of SRTP to secure traffic.

We would like to know if somebody objects to working on the deliverables 
above. Additionally, we would like to get feedback on the additional 
deliverables above. Is it something we want to work on right now, or 
maybe our plates will be full for now and we want to tackle those 
additional deliverables at a later point?

More generally, I might replace "Peer ID" with "other node identifiers"

Can you provide more specifics on what you have in mind for the last
bullet?  Messages that occur outside of the context of a base exchange?

While I generally very much agree with this direction, I think it  
would be useful to combine two of your proposed items into a single,  
more general item.  Namely, I would combine

into a more general draft that discusses how one can create HIs (and  
eventually ORCHIDs) from other identifiers, including both  
cryptographic ones (leading to cryptographic delegation) and non- 
cryptographic ones (such as Peer IDs).  I don't see any fundamental  
architectural difference between these, and much of the needed  
machinery is likely to be exactly the same.

What comes to the other items, I'd be more careful about the wording  
of a few, as follows:

> o Lightweight messages to carry upper-layer data.


I would generalise this to carrying any upper-layer data over  
specified HIP packets, including UPDATE, perhaps some new packet  
type, and probably also I2 and R2.  R1 needs some further study, and  
I'm almost convinced that we do *not* want to carry any additional  
data on I1, but maybe there are optimisations (e.g. with TCP) that  
may change my mind.  But perhaps the latter ones are better left of  
to another draft, to be completed once the basic one is (almost) ready.

Hi,

I am implementing / improving the existing implementation of the HIP 
Registration Extension for InfraHIP project (HIPL). I have a few questions 
concerning draft-ietf-hip-registration-02:

1) How does a registrar announce that it is capable of providing multiple
    services with different lifetimes?

    In Section 3.1 it is said that "a registrar SHOULD include a REG_INFO
    parameter in the R1 packets it sends during all base exchanges." The
    REG_INFO parameter, however, is of the following form:

    I.e. it has single "Min Lifetime" and "Max Lifetime" values. The issue
    would be solved if the registrar could include multiple REG_INFO
    parameters in the R1 packets, but nothing is said about multiple
    REG_INFOs in the draft.

2) How to handle REG_REQUEST, REG_RESPONSE and REG_FAILED parameters that
    have redundant services? These parameters are of the following form:

    Now, what happens if, say, both "Reg Type #1" and "Reg Type #2" are of
    type RVS? Not that it would make any sense to build such parameters, but
    the hosts should be ready to handle such parameters.

3) What happens if registration cancellation does not succeed? In Section
    5 it is said:

    "A zero lifetime is reserved for canceling purposes.  Requesting a zero
    lifetime for a registration type equals to canceling the registration
    of that type.  A requester MAY cancel a registration before it expires
    by sending a REG_REQ to the registrar with a zero lifetime.  A
    registrar SHOULD respond and grant a registration with a zero lifetime.
    A registrar (and an attached service) MAY cancel a registration before
    it expires, at its own discretion.  However, if it does so, it SHOULD
    send a REG_RESPONSE with a zero lifetime to all registered requesters."

    Thus if the requester wants to cancel a service it sends a REG_REQUEST
    parameter with zero lifetime to which the registrar should answer with
    a REG_RESPONSE with zero lifetime respectively. But what happens if the
    registrar is unable to cancel the registration due to transient
    conditions or some other reason? Does the registrar just remain silent
    or send a REG_FAILED?

This memo specifies the details of the Host Identity Protocol (HIP).
HIP allows consenting hosts to securely establish and maintain shared
IP-layer state, allowing separation of the identifier and locator
roles of IP addresses, thereby enabling continuity of communications
across IP address changes.  HIP is based on a Sigma-compliant Diffie-
Hellman key exchange, using public key identifiers from a new Host
Identity namespace for mutual peer authentication.  The protocol is
designed to be resistant to denial-of-service (DoS) and man-in-the-
middle (MitM) attacks.  When used together with another suitable
security protocol, such as the Encapsulated Security Payload (ESP),
it provides integrity protection and optional encryption for upper-
layer protocols, such as TCP and UDP.  This memo defines an Experimental 
Protocol for the Internet community.

This document defines mobility and multihoming extensions to the Host
Identity Protocol (HIP).  Specifically, this document defines a
general "LOCATOR" parameter for HIP messages that allows for a HIP
host to notify peers about alternate addresses at which it may be
reached.  This document also defines elements of procedure for
mobility of a HIP host -- the process by which a host dynamically
changes the primary locator that it uses to receive packets.  While
the same LOCATOR parameter can also be used to support end-host
multihoming, detailed procedures are left for further study.  This memo defines an Experimental Protocol for the Internet community.

This document is a product of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

kind. Discussion and suggestions for improvement are requested.

Hi,

as you can see from the RFC Editor's notes, we have just published six 
new RFCs (RFC5201 through 5206). This is an important milestone for the 
working group! It took a while, but we finally got there.

At this point, the chairs will work with the ADs to update our charter 
so that it reflects the current status of HIP and includes work on 
HIP-based overlays per our discussions on the list. We will keep the 
list updated. Also, we will update the target dates for our current 
charter items, which have been somewhat delayed for a number of reasons.
