        URL: https://www.rfc-editor.org/info/rfc7401

This document specifies the details of the Host Identity Protocol
(HIP). HIP allows consenting hosts to securely establish and
maintain shared IP-layer state, allowing separation of the identifier
and locator roles of IP addresses, thereby enabling continuity of
communications across IP address changes. HIP is based on a
Diffie-Hellman key exchange, using public key identifiers from a new
Host Identity namespace for mutual peer authentication. The protocol
is designed to be resistant to denial-of-service (DoS) and
man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks. When used together with another
suitable security protocol, such as the Encapsulating Security
Payload (ESP), it provides integrity protection and optional
encryption for upper-layer protocols, such as TCP and UDP.

This document obsoletes RFC 5201 and addresses the concerns raised by
the IESG, particularly that of crypto agility. It also incorporates
lessons learned from the implementations of RFC 5201.

This document is a product of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet Standards Track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Official
Internet Protocol Standards (https://www.rfc-editor.org/standards) for the
standardization state and status of this protocol. Distribution of this
memo is unlimited.

Exactly right.

It's trivial, but we just verified errata for it in another RFC, so I =

Hi,

with the publication of RFC 7401 and 7402 we have completed a
publication batch. Now it is time to start working on the next one.
These are the remaining WG items we have on our charter:

http://datatracker.ietf.org/wg/hip/documents/

Their respective authors, could you please send a status update to this
list? We need to know the current status of all drafts, the next steps,
and also important, whether you have enough energy to put into this work
at this point.

Thanks,

Gonzalo

Hi Gonzalo,

The Native NAT traversal draft was recently updated to align with
updated 5203bis. Now the plan is to write some more text about the
relaying details and post a new version when that's done. Then we could
get some reviews and perhaps move to WGLC.

Cheers,
Ari

Miika and I are working to finish 4423-bis.

Outside of the WG, Rene and I are working to finish HIP-DEX. I can
submit this as an independent submission, or the workgroup can submit
it. I should note that it is now being referenced by Zigbee (and IEEE
802.15.9), so I really have to finish it.

Further outside, we finally have a draft for SSE:

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-moskowitz-sse/

Including the IPR from my prior employer that insisted that I patent it
and I insisted that it had to be freely available to the IETF. Of course
SSE needs a KMP, and HIP is a logical choice. The SSE authors will be
applying for a BOF at Prague. The mailing list for SSE is SIESTA.

Hi,

Gonzalo asked to bring remaining issues to the list, so let's revive the
discussion around the mobility extensions.

On 01/12/2015 08:33 PM, Tom Henderson wrote:

"Need to make sure that revised specifications handle the use case of
decoupling locator announcements from SA creation (as well as the case
of integrating them)"

how?

> Issue 9: some implementations lack some of the compulsory UPDATE
> features, so maybe they should not be mandatory
> http://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/hip/trac/ticket/9

"Note from Baris Boyvat that some mandatory UPDATE features in RFC5206
are not supported by implementations, so perhaps they should not be
mandatory."

hmm, what was this about?

> Issue 12: sending UPDATE via rendezvous server (discussed above)

"Note: This tracker issue depends on Issue 1 that Julien filed for RFC
5204. At least one implementation supports this feature."

this should fixed for double jump. And we should decide which document
(mobility vs. rendezvous) to use describing mobility extensions.

> Issue 15: suggestion for naming UPDATE packets
> http://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/hip/trac/ticket/15

"From Baris Boyvat: "There is always three UPDATE packet sent for a
mobility event. In HIPL this fact was not explicitly used in the
implementation before, which made the implementation quite complex. I
would suggest to explicitly quality the UPDATE packets numbers, etc.
UPDATE1, UPDATE2, UPDATE3 which would in a way force people to think in
that terms.
Otherwise, when dealing with different UPDATE scenarios, SEQ, ACK
handling, retransmissions, etc conceptualization become very difficult.
Actually if possible, I would suggest to nicely separate these concepts
so that they can be easily modularized in an implementation. I'm not
sure, it's common for RFCs but this can be done in a "implementation
recommendation" form."

At least the packet renaming could be done easily.

Related to this, I have also privately suggested Thomas to describe a
simple state machine for mobility management. I have described the state
machine a long time ago:

http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/hipsec/current/msg01745.html

This could be also omitted if the authors do not have enough time, or
included as an implementation note in the appendix.

My biggest concern is that how can we make further UPDATE extensions
possible (i.e. how to signal that that a host does not support a new
extension X), while making the UPDATE procedure a bit more specific?

> Issue 21: UPDATE signature and HI inclusion
> http://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/hip/trac/ticket/21

I think we should definitely fix this issue. This is important
especially with HIP-based firewalls and mobile hosts. And it is rather
easy to fix.

> Issue 23: Allow Locator fields to have flow bindings

"draft-cao-hiprg-flow-mobility-00 proposes to use RFC6089 flow bindings
fields with HIP. Although the draft proposes a new locator type, we
should consider to just extend the base LOCATOR to allow this."

This should affect mainly the multihoming specification, right?

I submitted a new version of draft-ietf-hip-rfc4423-bis that fixes this,
but it got stuck in tool because the affiliations of all the authors
have changed and I could not verify the submission. I have contacted the
secretariat to resolve this somehow manually.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Host Identity Protocol Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Host Identity Protocol Architecture
        Authors : Robert Moskowitz
                          Miika Komu
	Filename : draft-ietf-hip-rfc4423-bis-10.txt
	Pages : 39
	Date : 2015-04-12

Abstract:
This memo describes a new namespace, the Host Identity namespace, and
a new protocol layer, the Host Identity Protocol, between the
internetworking and transport layers. Herein are presented the
basics of the current namespaces, their strengths and weaknesses, and
how a new namespace will add completeness to them. The roles of this
new namespace in the protocols are defined.

This document obsoletes RFC 4423 and addresses the concerns raised by
the IESG, particularly that of crypto agility. It incorporates
lessons learned from the implementations of RFC 5201 and goes further
to explain how HIP works as a secure signaling channel.

uploaded two versions that fix the mentioned issue:

version 10:
* fixed the RSA typo (the editorial errata reported)
* updated references to base and esp specifications
* added a reference to orchid specification in the text
* changed my affiliation

version 11:
* changed Robert's affiliation (sorry, missed this in the first upload)

Hi Julien,

let's have these three drafts as our next batch. I am going to start
WGLCs on 5204bis and 5205bis right away, and will WGLC 5203bis as well
as soon as you submit the revision.

Cheers,

Gonzalo

Hi Gonzalo,

Great. I have just submitted the revision of 5203-bis(-07) that
addresses Ari's outstanding comment:

A new version of I-D, draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis-07.txt
has been successfully submitted by Julien Laganier and posted to the
IETF repository.

Name: draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis
Revision: 07
Title: Host Identity Protocol (HIP) Registration Extension
Document date: 2015-04-18
Group: hip
Pages: 14
URL:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis-07.txt
Status: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis/
Htmlized: http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis-07
Diff: http://www.ietf.org/rfcdiff?url2=draft-ietf-hip-rfc5203-bis-07

Abstract:
This document specifies a registration mechanism for the Host
Identity Protocol (HIP) that allows hosts to register with services,
such as HIP rendezvous servers or middleboxes. This document
   obsoletes RFC5203.
