Hi all,

We have a issue regarding IGMP V1 - V2 Compatibility .

If we run IGMP V2 (System A) in the router and if we receive a IGMP V1
query from a router whose IP address less than the (A) should the
V2 router do a Querier election and go to NON-QUERIER mode ??

The RFC states that the V2 router should log a warning if it receives
a V1 query...

Kindly clarify.

Regards

Yes.

There's no automatic Querier configuration; if you get a V1 Query
and you're not configured for V1 then there's a misconfiguration.
The warning is to make the administrator aware of the misconfiguration.
Logging the warning is in addition to doing the election.

hi all ,

the RFC states that when a host joins a group it should send report
immedaitely instead of waiting for the query to reduce delay ; but=20
it has to send only if it is the first host to join the group in its
subnetwork ;

moreover any host has to send its report with a destination address
same as the group address ;=20

in that case how will a host know that there is already a member
for the group it wants to join so as to prevent sending unsolicited
report ;

Hi all,

What will be the Router Group FSM that will be implemented for IGMP V1
router. ( There is no mention of this in the RFC 1112 ). Is it same as
V2 router FSM except that for the "Checking Membership State" where you
send V2 Group Specific query.

bala

The RFC doesn't say that last part (does it?).

This is an optimization that puts much more load on the host than it
saves on the network, so probably isn't worth doing.

Hi Krishnan,

> the RFC states that when a host joins a group it should send report
> immedaitely instead of waiting for the query to reduce delay ; but
> it has to send only if it is the first host to join the group in its
> subnetwork ;

The initial (join) report is always send out on the network, since there
is no way for the host to tell if traffic for that group is already
available on it's network. So instead of waiting for the router to ask
all the hosts about that group, you just send the report immediately.

(With IGMPv3, it's not enough to know if another host joined the same
group. They also need to tell what sources to include or exclude.)

> moreover any host has to send its report with a destination address
> same as the group address ;

(And with IGMPv3 all reports are send to 224.0.0.22: all IGMPv3 routers)

> in that case how will a host know that there is already a member
> for the group it wants to join so as to prevent sending unsolicited
> report ;

A host in IGMPv2 mode will receive IGMPv2 reports from other hosts on
the network since it subscribed to that group (so the interface will
accept them) and, as you said, the destination address of those report
equals that group. What happens in the IGMP code is that when a IGMPv1
or IGMPv2 comes in, the code checks to see if it has a pending report
for that same group, and cancels it.

(But with IGMPv3, you don't hold prevent sending those messages.)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Inter-Domain Multicast Routing Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol
                          Applicability Statement
	Author(s)	: T. Pusateri
	Filename	: draft-ietf-idmr-dvmrp-v3-as-00.txt,.ps
	Pages : 6
	Date : 09-Aug-00

This document provides a framework for the use of Distance Vector
Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) Version 3 within a multicast
routing domain. It is an interior gateway protocol designed to be
used within an autonomous system.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-idmr-dvmrp-v3-as-00.txt

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Dear all,

I find hard to understand the exact meaning of X in EXCLUDE(X,Y) IGMPv3
router state (Y seems obvious, as the collection of ALL sources present in
all hosts with an EXCLUDE mode AND absent from ALL hosts with an INCLUDE
mode). I would ask for clarification.

Throughout the reading of the draft I see two possible ways to interpret X:

1) X is the collection of ALL sources present in at least one host with an
INCLUDE mode AND at least one host with an EXCLUDE mode.
This seems compliant with paragraph 6.2.1: "The second set is the set which
represents conflicts in the desired reception state; this set must be
forwarded" (by the way the second set is actually the first in the writing
convention used in the tables), and paragraph 6.2.3 that refines what is
intended by "conflict": "If a source record has a running timer with a
router filter-mode for the group of EXCLUDE, it means that a "conflict" has
occurred with respect to desired reception state of that source (i.e. one
system desires the source and another one doesn't)"

2) X is the collection of ALL sources present in ALL hosts with an INCLUDE
mode.
This seems to be compliant with annex A.3: "One of the ways to accomplish
this is for routers to keep track of all sources desired by hosts that are
in INCLUDE mode even though the router itself is in EXCLUDE mode" and
paragraph 6.5: "if a router's state for a group is EXCLUDE(X,Y) and the
group timer expires for that group, the router switches to filter-mode of
INCLUDE with state INCLUDE(X)".
In this case there's not always a conflict in the desired reception state:
as far as source s1 is concerned there's no conflict between a host with
INCLUDE {s1} and a host with EXCLUDE {s2}, they both mean source s1 is to be
forwarded.

Every comment on my interpretations or misinterpretations would be greatly
appreciated.

Pierre

Pierre,

The X list of sources when the router is maintaining an EXCLUDE(X,Y)
state is useful for two reasons:
- Keep on forwarding a set of sources that are excluded by a host in
EXCLUDE mode but are requested to be forwarded by a host in INCLUDE
  mode.
- When EXCLUDE mode times out in the router and the group transitions
to include mode, X is used as the set of sources to forward after
  the switch.

thanks
Isidor

EXCLUDE(X,Y) means:

X: those sources from whom traffic must be forwarded since there are
hosts that are in include mode for this group and members of X in the
corresponding source list. (The 'conflicting' set from paragraph 6.2.1)

Y: router doesn't forward traffic from those sources, since none of the
hosts are interested. Either because all reports for this group were
EXCLUDE mode with members of Y -or- INCLUDE but no members of Y, or
through an expired timer (which just before the timer expired was a
member of X).

After Isidor and Wilbert answers I'm still a little bit confused.

From Isidor I understand X is the set of sources excluded by at least one
host in EXCLUDE mode AND at least requested by one host in INCLUDE mode.
This was my first interpretation in my previous message.

From Wilbert I understand X is the set of sources requested by at least one
host in INCLUDE mode, no matter the source lists for hosts in EXCLUDE mode.
This was my second interpretation in my previous message.

Let's give an example,
Three hosts with the following states for a specific group
EXCLUDE{a,b}
INCLUDE{a}
INCLUDE{c}
Will the router state be:
EXCLUDE({a},{b}) interpretation 1 ?
or
EXCLUDE({a,c},{b}) interpretation 2 ?
In case of 1, if host in EXCLUDE{a,b} ceases reporting, when router switches
to INCLUDE mode how will it know about source c ?

What am I missing ?

Thanks,

Pierre

Pierre,

The list of sources X contains all the sources reported from hosts
in INCLUDE mode up to the point where an exclude report is received.
At that point, only the conflicting sources are kept. This is repeated
in each query interval.
When the last host in EXCLUDE mode leaves the group, the router sends
a group specific query. This causes the EXCLUDE group timer on the router
to be lowered. At this point all hosts in INCLUDE mode respond and update
the list X. As there are no hosts left in EXCLUDE mode, no EXCLUDE reports
are received to update the group timer. Hence the timer expires with all
the sources in INCLUDE mode listed in X. At this point list X is used as
the list of source to forward in INCLUDE mode.

thanks
Isidor
