Dear ipdvb WG,

We are now reaching towards the end of the current charter for this WG. 
Our options are to either complete the current work and close this WG, 
or to propose a new Charter for 2007. At the last IETF meeting in San 
Diego, several topics were raised as potential WG items that were 
outside the current WG Charter, and that could be suitable for 
re-chartering.

The currently proposed changes include:

* Removal of the WG deliverable defining a new IP Address Resolution 
(AR) protocol - current comments suggest there is no consensus to 
progress this work item, and energy was instead devoted to completion of 
the informational draft, now with the IESG.

* Addition of a WG deliverable to define a set of extension headers for 
ULE that would allow convergence with the Generic Stream Encapsulation 
(GSE) currently being defined by the DVB Technical Module.

* Addition of a WG deliverable to define security extension headers for 
ULE - subject to progression of the ULE Security Requirements draft.

* Addition of work items to define a set of documents defining a 
framework and profiles that enable ULE and GSE to support header 
compression.


This email starts an open call for ideas. Comments and feedback on the 
above proposals are welcome, specifically, are there issues that should 
not be addressed? Are there topics that should also be included? Would 
anyone be willing to work to define the scope of any of these proposals 
in a form that could be suitable for submission to the WG and IESG?

As WG Chair, I request the ipdvb list to consider whether the WG is 
ready to adopt the following individual ID (Internet Draft) as a working 
group ID, with an intention to develop this into a RFC.

This particular draft was introduced to support a standard in 
preparation by the DVB Forum. The aim is to make the 2nd Generation 
Physical Layer present an interface via the Generic Stream Encapsulation 
that is consistent with ULE (e.g. uses the IANA registry), so that both 
can benefit from common extension modules: header compression, etc 
(should these be defined).

PLEASE DO read the draft below and offer email comments on the 
suitability or progression to an RFC and the technical content. ALL 
comments are welcome. Email received before the 25th January 2007 will 
be used to inform the decision about whether to make this a WG Draft.

WG documents should no longer be regarded as the property of the 
individuals who originally authored them - the working group as a whole 
must decide how they are shaped, and to see the document to
a successful conclusion. If adopted, the Internet Draft will be renamed 
to start with the filename draft-ietf-ipdvb..., and will be listed on

Dear Gorry,

thanks for your initiative.
I read your draft carefully and found it very interesting.
However, I have the feeling that MPEG-2 TS is gradually abandoned and we=20
are paving towards an "all-IP" environment.
The introduction of "generic stream" shows exactly this tendency, and I=20
believe that the same philosophy is to be followed in the 2nd generation=20
terrestrial specs also (DVB-T2).
Surely, providing a support for TS packets encapsulation within GSE or=20
ULE might provide a backwards-compatibility, but IMHO it is of=20
questionable usability. MPEG-2 TS packets can be directly mapped in a S2=20
BBframe, without the use of extra overhead.

At NCSR "Demokritos", we have a strong experience in IP/DVB and are=20
currently leading a European research activity which is to investigate=20
DVB-T2. In the latter, our team is devoted to research regarding=20
baseband formatting and upper-layer issues.

My proposal: we can go on with your draft, since it strengthens the role=20
of GSE and ULE, making them more flexible. Indeed, the feature of=20
grouping data belonging to the same NPA is quite attractive.
But I believe it is also important to look into how the ipdvb WG can=20
benefit from the advance of next-generation terrestrial standards.=20
Looking towards the "shutoff" of the MPEG-2 TS, possible issues for=20
research could be:

- the full migration of the MPEG signalling (PSI) to IP/GSE level
- the transfer of the DVB-H Time Slicing feature in IP/GSE level
- the transfer of the transport-layer FEC (MPE-FEC) in IP/GSE level.
and generally any issue which may stem from the use of Next-gen DVB as a=20
"transmission system for broadcasting IP datagrams"

I would be more than willing to participate in any activity covering=20
such issues.

Indeed, on this specific draft: MPEG-2 TS packets can indeed be directly=20
mapped in a S2 BBframe, without the use of extra overhead - as you say,=20
but the aim was (as you hinted) to provide a way of sending small=20
ammounts of SI-Data over a totally packet-based (IP) link-layer, so that=20
a future system would not require a separate ISI for the TS, and
could for example receive its signalling in-band with the data.

On the other research areas you identify, relating to all-IP based=20
solutions, these seem like good potential areas for future work and=20
important standardisation - and would be good to include in the Charter=20
debate for future work in this group - I would be interested to know if=20
other people have comments on your list?

Dear Gorry,

thanks for your initiative.
I read your draft carefully and found it very interesting.
However, I have the feeling that MPEG-2 TS is gradually abandoned and we=20
are paving towards an "all-IP" environment. The introduction of "generic=20
stream" shows exactly this tendency, and I believe that the same=20
philosophy is to be followed in the 2nd generation terrestrial specs=20
also (DVB-T2). Surely, providing a support for TS packets encapsulation=20
within GSE or ULE might provide a backwards-compatibility, but IMHO it=20
is of questionable usability. MPEG-2 TS packets can be directly mapped=20
in a S2 BBframe, without the use of extra overhead.

At NCSR "Demokritos", we have a strong experience in IP/DVB and are=20
currently leading a European research activity which is to investigate=20
DVB-T2. In the latter, our team is devoted to research regarding=20
baseband formatting and upper-layer issues.

My proposal: we can go on with your draft, since it strengthens the role=20
of GSE and ULE, making them more flexible. Indeed, the feature of=20
grouping data belonging to the same NPA is quite attractive. But I=20
believe it is also important to look into how the ipdvb WG can benefit=20
from the advance of next-generation terrestrial standards. Looking=20
towards the "shutoff" of the MPEG-2 TS, possible issues for research=20
could be:

- the full migration of the MPEG signalling (PSI) to IP/GSE level
- the transfer of the DVB-H Time Slicing feature in IP/GSE level
- the transfer of the transport-layer FEC (MPE-FEC) in IP/GSE level.
and generally any issue which may stem from the use of Next-gen DVB as a=20
"transmission system for broadcasting IP datagrams"

I would be more than willing to participate in any activity covering=20
such issues.

ready to adopt the following individual ID (Internet Draft) as a working=20
group ID, with an intention to develop this into a RFC.

This particular draft was introduced to support a standard in=20
preparation by the DVB Forum. The aim is to make the 2nd Generation=20
Physical Layer present an interface via the Generic Stream Encapsulation=20
that is consistent with ULE (e.g. uses the IANA registry), so that both=20
can benefit from common extension modules: header compression, etc=20
(should these be defined).

PLEASE DO read the draft below and offer email comments on the=20
suitability or progression to an RFC and the technical content. ALL=20
comments are welcome. Email received before the 25th January 2007 will=20
be used to inform the decision about whether to make this a WG Draft.

WG documents should no longer be regarded as the property of the=20
individuals who originally authored them - the working group as a whole=20
must decide how they are shaped, and to see the document to a successful=20
conclusion. If adopted, the Internet Draft will be renamed to start with=20

I strongly believe that the ipdvb WG should adopt this draft.

I also have a few comments(C)/suggestions(S) (see below).

(S.1) Regarding the PDU-Concat Extension:
Maybe we can somehow use the (currently unused) most-significant bit in the first byte of they PDU-Length field?
Of course, as nothing comes for free, every possible use of it will complicate the receiver processing.
Nevertheless, we should consider it. My suggestions are:

	(a) It could be used to selectively enable a type field for each concatenated PDU, i.e. sort of "Type Field present indicator" (denoted by T). Of course it could also be an "absent indicator" ;-). From now on, I'll denote the PDU-Length field along with the optional type field as "concat header". The first concat header must have T=1 to indicate the type of the payload. After that one, if in subsequent concat headers T=0 then the the type field is omitted and the type is the same as indicated in the last concat header which had a type field (T=1).
This also gives us the option to use extension headers in concatenated PDUs. The question is if we should allow them.
I might add that using the T-bit would make the CONCAT-PDU-Type of the current draft version unnecessary.

I also discussed this point with Gorry. It would be glad if we could get some comments on this one.

	(b) We could also use the MSbit for padding purposes, i.e. to achieve alignment (e.g. 2- or 4-byte) for the concatenated PDUs.
The bit (P) would then control the presence of a padding control byte right after the PDU-Length field. The content of this padding control byte (PDU-Pad)
is interpreted as the number of (additional) padding bytes (containing the hexadecimal value 0xff) preceding the start of the concatenated PDU.
Example:
If P=1 and the PDU-Pad field has a value of 2, this means that 2 bytes of padding follow the padding control field. This means that in total the PDU is padded by 3 bytes (including PDU-Pad).

If PDU-Pad=0, then we've a 1-byte of padding.

(S.2) Regarding the TS-Concat Extension
In section 3.1 it might be more clear to refer to the number of TS packets contained in the SNDU by name, e.g. TS-Count, defined as
	TS-Count := (Length-10+D*6) / 188


(S.3) The figures on page 9 and 10 may suggest that the concatenated PDUs are aligned, but in fact they're not.

(C.4) Regarding the "Summary" section (4)
I never heard the term "Next_Header options" before.

(C.5) Typos

draft-fairhurst-ipdvb-ule-ext-01.txt.

6 Responses were received during this call (2 direct to the chair).

All these responses moved to adopt the document as a WG Draft, some 
issues have been raised for discussion, and these will be brought to the 
list.

The present authors have therefore been asked to update the Internet 
Draft to taje into account corrections and formatting leading to a new 
revised draft that will named draft-ietf-ipdvb-ule-ext-00.txt.

The new I-D will be a WG draft, intended for publication as a 
Standards-Track RFC (under the current ipdvb Charter). **ALL** inputs to 
help improve the document are therfore very welcome - including what 
extra should be added, what should be reworked, corrected, etc.

I would like to be sure we understood this and the WG comes to the 
correct decision.

In the first draft I made, there was a Type field for each PDU.  The 
discusssions that followed made me doubt that this was the correct way: 
many PDUs were likely to have the same Type, it did not seem sensible to 
mix IPv4 with IPv6 or MPLS, VLAN traffic in the same concatenated PDU, 
and certainly it would make processing more complex (i.e. more error 
prone). So, in the draft with Bernhard we added the rule that all PDUs 
must have the Type within the concatenated PDU (your inputs helped 
motivate this).

The T-bit seems a middle ground, allowing both varients at additional 
complexity. I'm interested to see where this can help... are there 
use-cases in which this would be desirable? Anybody have thoughts?

How big an issue is this? The byte stream itself in which the SNDUs are 
carried can result in odd alignments. One of the strengths of removing 
the type field was that it reduced the number of possibly non-byte 
aligned 16-bit numbers, although the PDU-Length field (as above) still 
needs to be placed in a 16 bit register, and the data move that 
marshalls the PDU into its destination could in some architectures 
benefit from starting on an aligned address. So, I'm not sure what 
people feel about the use of padding to provide byte-alignment?

If anyone has thoughts or opinions on either of these, do tell us. is a 
T-bit a good use? Is a form of P-bit good use? Should we reserve X 
(assign 0) as in the current draft?
