If you haven't yet heard, I'm pleased to announce that as of last
Tuesday, XHTML-Print was advanced to Proposed Recommendation:
=20
    http://www.w3.org/TR/2006/PR-xhtml-print-20060131/
=20
Achievement of Proposed Recommendation or PR status indicates that the
specification is a stable technical document, has formally addressed all
issues raised during the Candidate Recommendation period, and has
demonstrated that each feature has at least two independent
interoperable implementations.
=20
The review period ends Feb 28 2006.
=20
Should this document become a W3C Recommendation, W3C expects to issue a
press release and publish testimonials in support of the document. You
are encouraged to take advantage of this testimonial opportunity. In
particular, if possible the W3 would like to see endorsements from
printer, mobile phone, and CE vendors. For further information please
contact me or Steven Pemberton <steven@w3.org
<http://us.f525.mail.yahoo.com/ym/Compose?To=3Dsteven@w3.org&YY=3D77698&o=
rde
r=3Ddown&sort=3Ddate&pos=3D0&view=3Da&head=3Db> >, HTML Working Group =
Chair.
=20
A heartfelt 'THANKS!' and 'CONGRATS!' to all who helped reach this
milestone.
=20
This new version of XHTML-Print is inconsistent in several ways with the
current CR version of CSS Print. I expect to make the necessary changes
to CSS Print over the next few months, along with working on the CSS
Print test suite. Let me know if you'd like to help... ;-)
=20
Best wishes,
=20
Melinda
=20
PS We currently have billing on the W3C main page! ;-) Check it out...

Hi,

Retitled to make the posting of the final PWG Counter MIB explicit.

All - if your company is considering implementing the PWG Counter MIB,
please let us know. With ONE prototype (not even a full implementation),
this document can be raised to Candidate Standard (after a new PWG
Last Call and PWG Formal Approval is completed), per PWG Process/2.0.

Thanks,
- Ira (editor of PWG Counter MIB)

Subject: PWG-ANNOUNCE> NEW Directory 'mfp' and process for MFP Alerts BOF
Date: Tue, 14 Feb 2006 09:46:11 -0800
Importance: high
X-Priority: 1
MIME-Version: 1.0
X-Mailer: Internet Mail Service (5.5.2657.72)
Content-Type: text/plain;
	charset="ISO-8859-1"
Sender: owner-pwg-announce@pwg.org

Hi,

NOTE: As required by PWG Process/2.0, I've just created a
new short acronym directory for this BOF (see (4) below)
and copied all existing MFP Alerts materials there.

Please do NOT post any further documents on MFP Alerts in
the misnamed directory 'AlertsExtension' - thanks.

Here's a quick primer on the current PWG Process for a BOF
(birds of a feather), which is the current state of the MFP

Hi,

This is an invitation to printer vendors and printing ISVs
to register for and attend the upcoming OSDL (Open Source
Development Lab) Printing Summit.

Over twenty participants are already registered (I'll soon
forward the list with their affiliations) from Linux OSVs,
printer vendors, ISVs, etc.

IMPORTANT: Registration is limited to 50 people by the
facility donated by Ricoh/Lanier. Don't miss the chance.
There's a very attractive conference hotel rate.

The latest agenda, including registration and hotel info,
is in the directory:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/osdl/

in the file:

  osdl-printing-summit-agenda-20060216.pdf

The template to be filled out by particpants is in the file:

  osdl-printing-summit-template-20060215.pdf

There will also be summary/wrap-up _teleconferences_ at the
end of each day, for those who can't attend in person (not
yet shown on this version of the agenda).

There will be another planning teleconference in approximately
four weeks (we had one earlier today).

To subscribe to the very active (and technical) OSDL Desktop
Printing mailing list visit:

  http://lists.osdl.org/mailman/listinfo

If your company builds printers and/or cares about printing
on Linux, this is the MOST IMPORTANT focused event in 2006.

Cheers,
- Ira (for the FSG Open Printing Steering Committee)

New information about the OSDL Printing Summit (10-12 April 2006)
is now posted in the directory:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/osdl

in the files:

  osdl-printing-summit-agenda-20060216.txt
  - updated agenda (OBSOLETES the PDF of same date)

  OSDL-Printing-Summit-Registrations-20060216.pdf
  - list of current registrations (with most of the affiliations)

Many more people have committed to attend (attendance is limited
to 50 people total by the facility size at Ricoh/Lanier), but
have not yet registered. Please don't wait until too late!

Cheers,
- Ira

PWG and FSG folks, Saturday (18 February 2006)

PLEASE always use the live link below for the latest info on the
OSDL Printing Summit (10-12 April 2006):

http://groups.osdl.org/workgroups/dtl/desktop_architects/desktop_printing

BEWARE: The above link is too long (73 characters) to pass
safely through many mail tools with line-folding.

As updated roster information is posted on the OSDL Desktop
Printing mailing list, I'll pass it along in plaintext to the
PWG and FSG/OP announcement lists.

PLEASE do NOT depend on the dated (but usually STALE) copies of
the agenda/logistics/roster in our local FTP directory:

  ftp://ftp.pwg.org/pub/pwg/osdl

Thanks very much,
- Ira (for FSG Open Printing Steering Committee)

Hi,

Very nice tool - will do XML syntax checking - will correctly
display DMTF MOF files (yuck!!!) in a readable manner.

Many thanks to Rick (be sure to pick up his read-me in the
same FTP directory to know how to install the MOF syntax
highlighter).

Cheers,
- Ira

For anyone who needs to edit DMTF MOF files, or just look at them, I just
uploaded a free editor with color highlighting for the keywords that will at
least give some appearance of structure to MOF syntax. (If you are already
using UltraEdit or vi or something more advanced, never mind.) Even if you
are not editing, the color helps readability. Personally, I can't read MIBs
or MOFs without color highlighting; they're just a blaze of gray otherwise.

Hi,

Finally published at:

ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/rfc4395.txt
- "Guidelines and Registration Procedures for New URI Schemes"
  (February 2006)

I suggest that the PWG consider/discuss at the April meeting
a proposal to develop an Informational RFC that registers
"Printing Industry URI Schemes" ('lpr:' - which is only defined
in the SLP 'service:printer' schema, 'pwg-psi[td|ps]:',
'pwg-wims:', etc.).

I would volunteer to work on such a project (I wrote the 'ipp:'
scheme defined in RFC 3510).

Cheers,
- Ira

Hi,

New very good article introducing Internationalization
concepts from the W3C I18N GEO group - recommended.

Perfect for product managers, development managers,
programmers and others who need to learn about I18N.

If you're a printer vendor, please forward this to the
people who design/implement your imbedded web page.

Cheers,
- Ira

Web

The GEO Working Group has published the article:

Internationalization Quick Tips for the Web
	http://www.w3.org/International/quicktips/
	By Richard Ishida

This set of Quick Tips is aimed at helping newcomers to Web
internationalization. The quick tips summarize important concepts related to
international Web design in a similar way to the popular WAI Quick Tips.
These tips are not complete guidelines, they are simply a few key concepts
to bear in mind. The page also links to supporting material, where
available, at the W3C's Internationalization Activity subsite.

The document is linked from the new Getting Started page that also explains
various ways to find information on the W3C Internationalization subsite,
and points to some key definitions.

The "Getting Started" page and these quick tips aim to provide newcomers
with a gentle pathway into the many and varied resources on the site, rather
than expecting them to work out for themselves how to get an overview of the
topic and decide which of the resources to read first. These pages do not go
through the review stages typical of technical articles, and will be
modified and improved over the weeks following their publication.

Any comments should be sent to www-international@w3.org

You can find various news filters and RSS feeds relating to the work of the
Internationalization Activity at

Hi,

FYI - all three regular PWG teleconferences have been cancelled
this week, due to conflicts with the IEEE P2600 face-to-face.

So, no WIMS/SM, WIMS/CIM, or PWG Steering Committee meetings.
They will all be held _next_ week.

Cheers,
- Ira
