This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your advanced.org
mailing list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how
to use it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ippm-request@advanced.org) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@advanced.org. Thanks!

Dear all,
I am trying to make a kind of "State of the art" on data traffic
modeling.
If you are working on this field, and if you have interesting models it
would be great if you could give me the references.
I already got the ETSI 30.03 version 3.2.0, plus a few other models ...
Thanks a lot ;-).

Regards,

Sebastien Maillet.

Dear IPPMers,

below you'll find two proposals how to modify the coding of OWDP messages.
Please don't expect immediate replies on comments from me, I'll be out of
office until 25. April.
I hope the stuff below is readable when you get it...

Regards, Rüdiger

-------Content starts here----------

1 Accept/Reject Indication
The coding of parameters should be non-ambiguos to leave no room for
interpretations.

+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+
| Accept |
+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+

Example of OWDP-02.txt:

A zero value in the Accept field means that the server accepts the
[request] and is willing to conduct further [actions]. Any
non-zero value means that the server does not accept the
[request] provided by the client or, for some other reason, is
not willing to conduct further [actions] in this OWDP-Control
   session.

Proposal

A zero value in the Accept field means that the server accepts the
[request] and is willing to conduct further [actions]. A
00000001 value means that the server does not accept the
[request] provided by the client or, for some other reason, is
not willing to conduct further [actions] in this OWDP-Control
session. All other settings are reserved.

2 Request Session / test traffic profile
The Request Session message should contain a generic Test Traffic Profile
parameter leaving room for future definitions of test traffic profiles.

Definition of OWDP-02.txt (Request Session message)

        0 1 2 3

Note: This modification is based on the assumption that TLV coding will be
applied for the OWDP protocol. During the 50th IETF meeting Joan
Cucchiara (?) of BRIXnet volunteered to make a suggestion to this regard.

Definition of the parameter see OWDP-02.txt.

Rules for Session Profile TLV definitions
An OWDP Session Profile other than the defaultprofile MUST be defined by a
separate IETF document. The profile parameters MUST provide the complete
information to non-ambiguosly identify the characteristics of a test-stream
to be used for a session.

Note that RFC1889 (RTP) choose a similar principle to provide flexibility
for future extensions.

Ruediger,

The first change makes a lot of sense and will go into the document
(so that the code specified now can become a catch-all error code
later).

The second change is more complex and I'd like to hear what the other
people who wanted a similar approach actually want before/if we put
any particular scheme in to replace what we have. Joan and Kaynam
said there will be something on the list that makes explicit their
suggestions (hint, hint).

Thanks for the contribution!

This message is to announce the alpha release of Nettest, a secure,
real-time network monitoring framework developed in the Distributed
Systems Department at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

The Nettest framework is designed to incorporate existing and new
network tests, and be run as a daemon or an interactive process.
Requests for network tests are received via a SSL connection or
the user interface and are authorized using an ACL list (in the
future authorization using Akenti will also be supported).

For tests that require coordination between the two ends of the test,
Nettest establishes a SSL connection to accomplish this coordination.
A test between two remote computers can be requested via the user
interface if the Nettest daemon is running on both remote machines
and the user is authorized. Authorization for the test is through a
chain of trust established by the Nettest daemons. Nettest is
responsible for determining if the test request is authorized, but it
does nothing further to secure the test once the test is running.

Currently the Nettest framework incorporates Iperf-v1.2, a simple
ping type test, and a tuned TCP test that uses a given required
throughput and ping results to determine the round trip time to set
a buffer size (based on the delay bandwidth product) and then performs
an Iperf TCP throughput test. Additional network test tools can be
integrated into the Nettest framework in the future.

Nettest was tested and developed on Linux and Solaris. Nettest is
written in C++, primarily using gcc but also tested on SparcWorks C++.
Secure communication is implemented using SSL-v0.9.6.

To run Nettest you will need the latest version of Openssl.

NetLogger can be used for result reporting purposes, it will allow you
to send all test results to one location.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A Framework for Defining Empirical Bulk Transfer
                          Capacity Metrics
	Author(s)	: M. Mathis, M. Allman
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-btc-framework-06.txt
	Pages : 9
	Date : 26-Apr-01

Bulk Transport Capacity (BTC) is a measure of a network's ability to
transfer significant quantities of data with a single
congestion-aware transport connection (e.g., TCP). The intuitive
definition of BTC is the expected long term average data rate (bits
per second) of a single ideal TCP implementation over the path in
question. However, there are many congestion control algorithms
(and hence transport implementations) permitted by IETF standards.
This diversity in transport algorithms creates a difficulty for
standardizing BTC metrics because the allowed diversity is
sufficient to lead to situations where different implementations
will yield non-comparable measures -- and potentially fail the
formal tests for being a metric.
This document defines a framework for standardizing multiple BTC
metrics that parallel the permitted transport diversity. Two
approaches are used. First, each BTC metric must be much more
tightly specified than the typical IETF protocol. Pseudo-code or
reference implementations are expected to be the norm. Second, each
BTC methodology is expected to collect some ancillary metrics which
are potentially useful to support analytical models of BTC.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-btc-framework-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-btc-framework-06.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
