This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ippm-request@ietf.org ) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

Hi all,
We are trying to understand the distribution of interpacket gaps over
internet at the sender's end and at the receiver's end and in the link.
Are there any publications that have studied the interpacket gap
distributions over Internet.
If not, can anyone explain as to what values of these gaps should be
used at source to simulate the actual packet gaps over Internet? I would
appreciate any input or guess work related to this topic.
Thanks,
Nischal

Call for Papers

Ad Hoc Networks Journal (Elsevier)
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/adhoc

Special Issue on:

Generalized Ad Hoc Networks (GAHN) and Quality of Service (QoS)

Data networks increasingly offer users a wide variety of networking =
modalities, both wired and wireless, allowing user traffic to be routed =
over many alternate paths, at different costs, with different levels of =
QoS, reliability, robustness and power consumption. We will call such =
systems "Generalized Ad Hoc Networks" (GAHN), and the concept includes =
conventional wireless ad hoc networks.

By the term "user" we do not "just" mean the end user: we include a =
variety of economic agents, such as ISPs, who derive benefit from the =
data being carried, and we also include all the other lower level agents =
including common carriers. However, the actual paths, costs, and QoS =
outcomes received by these users remain generally opaque to the most of =
them, and appear at a "per connection" result for the end user, and at =
aggregate economic levels for many other actors. QoS itself should be =
understood broadly, including concerns about reliability and robustness, =
power utilization, pricing and economics and obviously also conventional =
QoS metrics.

This special issue seeks visionary and forward looking papers based on =
sound technical arguments, experimental designs, measurements, or =
theoretical analysis, which address QoS in GAHN. Of course, technical =
contributions relating QoS to conventional wireless ad hoc networks are =
also welcome. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- QoS and routing in AHN and GAHN
- Power aware routing
- Combining routing and priority schemes in AHN
- Composite and multicriterion QoS metrics
- Using concepts from eceonomics and game theory in GAHN
- Mixed wired and wireless AHN design
- Security in GAHN and AHN
- Experimental systems and test-beds

Papers not to exceed 25 pages should be submitted electronically in the =
form of a postscript file, before September 1 2003, to Prof. Erol =
Gelenbe at erol@cs.ucf.edu -- The time-table for this special issue will =
be as follows:

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2003
Decision Notification: Dec. 15, 2003

The latest draft of "IPPM Metrics Registry" has all the fixes
and changes suggested on this list, at previous IETF meetings,
and from our MIB advisor.

The co-chairs propose a Working Group last-call for this document,
draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt.

Please comment on whether or not you feel that this Internet-Draft
should be given to the Area Directors and the IESG for consideration as a Proposed Standard RFC.

Submit your comments to the IPPM mailing list or to the
chairs or I-D authors as you feel appropriate (although public
comments are preferred). This Working Group last call will end
on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 12:00 EST.

One pointer for the document is:

One nit: I believe we need to add a comment for IANA. From
http://www.ietf.org/ID-nits.html:

IANA Considerations section: "Required if the document requires IANA to assign or update values in
an IANA registry before RFC publication. Note that for the assignment of just an OID for a MIB or
PIB Module, no IANA Considerations section is required; it is sufficient to request such via a
MIB/SMI or PIB/SPPI comment line, aka: ::= { mib-2 xxx } -- xxx to be assigned by IANA"

(Don't create a new version based on this yet, let's wait
for other comments.)

Hi Nischal

Do you mean interpacket gaps at the sending endpoint or sending Internet
access point - i.e. the gaps for a single stream or an aggregate of multiple
streams?

We have done some work in the endpoint area related to RTP streams - looking
at the distribution of inter-RTP intervals at the sending endpoint and
receiving endpoint. We've also developed a model for simulating the packet
delays due to LAN and access link congestion; this is based on trains of
impulses (with an occurrence probability that depends on congestion and a
height that depends on serialization delay) passing through a filter
function - basically a time series approach.

Hi all,
We are trying to understand the distribution of interpacket gaps over
internet at the sender's end and at the receiver's end and in the link.
Are there any publications that have studied the interpacket gap
distributions over Internet.
If not, can anyone explain as to what values of these gaps should be
used at source to simulate the actual packet gaps over Internet? I would
appreciate any input or guess work related to this topic.
Thanks,
Nischal

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A One-way Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP)
	Author(s)	: S. Shalunov, B. Teitelbaum et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-06.txt
	Pages : 37
	Date : 2003-5-20

With growing availability of good time sources to network nodes, it
becomes increasingly possible to measure one-way IP performance
metrics with high precision. To do so in an interoperable manner, a
common protocol for such measurements is required. The One-Way
Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP) can measure one-way delay, as
well as other unidirectional characteristics, such as one-way loss.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-06.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-06.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.
