This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ippm-request@ietf.org ) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

                      INTIMATE 2003
		(INternet TraffIc MAtrices Estimation)
                   Paris, France
             http://adonis.lip6.fr/intimate2003/

The INTIMATE (INternet TraffIc MAtrices Estimation) workshop will be be held
in Paris in June 16 and 17th, 2003. INTIMATE Workshop is focused on traffic
matrices estimation techniques. The idea behind this workshop is to bring
together people working, not just generally in network tomography, but more
specifically on traffic matrices. Because traffic matrices are the input to
most traffic engineering applications, this area is very important to
carriers and ISPs. Recent research has revealed that this problem area is
rich and raises a variety of challenging technical difficulties for
researchers. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers
to carry on detailed discussions while sharing ideas and problems. This
workshop is by invitation only and will be limited to approximately 50
people in order to keep it small so that much discussion can take place. At
least 2 major tier-1 ISPs (Sprint, AT&T) and one historical European telco
(FT) will participate providing their perspective on applications and needs.
It will be a 2-day workshop with 2 panels and a series of invited talks. We
will cover the following topics:

·	Statistical and non-statistical estimation methods
·	Methods for generating good starting points for estimation
·	Stationary and non-stationary traffic matrices, temporal issues
·	Validation Methods and Problems
·	Modeling Assumptions
·	Scalability Issues for Estimation and Validation
·	Applications
·	Impact of errors in traffic matrix estimation on traffic

We have actually up to 14 invited speakers among the most renown networking
researchers. We target an attendance level of 50 participants. Registration
is open NOW. Please make hotel reservations as soon as possible.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : IP Measurement Protocol (IPMP)
	Author(s)	: A. McGregor, M. Luckie
	Filename	: draft-mcgregor-ipmp-02.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 2003-6-5

The practice and need for active network measurement is well
established, however current tools are not well suited to this
task, mostly because the protocols which they employ have not
been designed for measurement of the modern Internet.
The IP Measurement Protocol (IPMP) is based on packet-probes, and
is designed to allow routers to participate in measurements by the
insertion of path information as the probe passes between a pair of
hosts. IPMP is tightly constrained and easy to implement.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-mcgregor-ipmp-02.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-mcgregor-ipmp-02.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-mcgregor-ipmp-02.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Hi all,
I have been trying to fit a standard probability model to the data that
is collected over network. I am able to do Non-Linear curve fitting and
I realized that it is different from fitting a model. I would really
appreicate any pointers for s/w that one can use to fit these standard
models.

Hi all,
I have been trying to fit a standard probability model to the data that
is collected over network. I am able to do Non-Linear curve fitting and
I realized that it is different from fitting a model. I would really
appreicate any pointers for s/w that one can use to fit these standard
models.

Dear Nischal,

if you want to fit the data to a parametric family of distribution, for
example to gaussian pdf or Gamma, etc, you should estimate the parameters of
the distribution. Most frequently you can a Maximum likelihood approach. If
your question is to test if a data set follows a specified distribution, you
have a lot of Goodness of fit test (for example Kolmogoroff X^2 test for
testing the adequation with a Gaussian). You might find all of these stuff
in any basic statistic book.

However, before using any approaches be sure that your data are not
correlated as these approaches are very sensitive to correlation in the
data. If the data are correlated you need more complex approaches.

Good luck

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email.]

Greetings,

We have written a short internet draft on issues and concerns in
deploying monitoring infrastructure in ISP networks. The goal of this
document is to open a discussion on whether there should be a BOF to
address these at the next IETF (Vienna, July 2003). We welcome
comments/inputs from everyone.

The draft can be found at:

[Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email.]

Greetings,

We have written a short internet draft on issues and concerns in
deploying monitoring infrastructure in ISP networks. The goal of this
document is to open a discussion on whether there should be a BOF to
address these at the next IETF (Vienna, July 2003). We welcome
comments/inputs from everyone.

The draft can be found at:

yment-00.txt

Thanks and regards,

Supratik Bhattacharyya

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A One-way Active Measurement Protocol Requirements
	Author(s)	: S. Shalunov, B. Teitelbaum
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-reqs-06.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2003-6-11

With growing availability of good time sources to network nodes, it
becomes increasingly possible to measure one-way IP performance
metrics with high precision. To do so in an interoperable manner, a
common protocol for such measurements is required. This document
specifies requirements for a one-way active measurement protocol
(OWAMP) standard. The protocol can measure one-way delay, as well as
other unidirectional characteristics, such as one-way loss.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-reqs-06.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in

or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-reqs-06.txt".

Supratik,

After reviewing your draft, I have a few comments;

You mentioned the need for a new control plane protocol. Are you suggesting
that SNMP would not meet your needs and therefore are proposing to develop a
different control plane protocol?

Conceptually, your draft has merit. There are several groups some of which
you mentioned, that are working to define metrics. However, there is a great
deal of latitude in how those metrics may be applied in a monitoring
solution. If you are proposing a work group that would use existing metrics
and then identify how they should be used in a unified manner, then I think
the work group would have value.

Guidelines on the selection of metrics, the nominal data values, the
reporting mechanisms and information content would be useful if it could be
standardized.

Another point is that general monitoring can take on a very large scope.
Monitoring for a particular goal may be a more realistic and manageable
task. For example, monitoring for Fault Management is quite different then
monitoring for Performance Management.

Supratik,

After reviewing your draft, I have a few comments;

Monitoring for a particular goal may be a more realistic and manageable
task. For example, monitoring for Fault Management is quite different then
monitoring for Performance Management.

regards

Hi,

I would certainly find a working group as this of very great value. As your
draft rightly explained there should be a framework or standard on how
measurement within an isp networks should be applied.
I for one have read so many papers/research on how different organizations
and researchers approach how to measure and try and get an understanding of
network traffic. I have utilized snmp down to using quantitative statistical
methods, traffic matrix’s etc. to try and understand our traffic and there
is still a lot I don’t understand.
A working group like this will certainly as Robert.H said will have merits.
I for one will like to know how others are actually monitoring their isp
networks and most importantly the issues they face. I will certainly like to
share and talk about my findings as well.

Regards,
seun

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.

Title : Spatial metrics for IPPM
	Author(s)	: E. Stephan
	Filename	: draft-stephan-ippm-spatial-metrics-01.txt
	Pages : 13
	Date : 2003-6-20

The IETF IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) working group has standardized
metrics for measuring end-to-end performance. This memo defines
spatial metrics both for measuring end-to-end network performance
using aggregation of sequence of network measures and for measuring
the performance of segments of an IP path trajectory. It
distinguishes clearly the decomposition of one end-to-end measure
result in a sequence of per hop results from the aggregation of a
sequence of per hop measure results in an end-to-end result.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-stephan-ippm-spatial-metrics-01.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-stephan-ippm-spatial-metrics-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-stephan-ippm-spatial-metrics-01.txt".

July 1, 2003, the deadline for paper submission to IEEE INFOCOM 2004,
to be held in Hong Kong, March 7 - 11, 2004, is rapidly approaching.
The Call For Papers can be found at http://www.ieee-infocom.org/2004/.

We are well aware that there is concern about SARS among some
potential authors. However, the lifting of the travel advisories on Hong Kong
by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Center for Disease
Control (CDC) affirms that SARS is under control. There has not been
any new SARS case in Hong Kong for the past several days. Of all the
cities under WHO travel advisory in the rest of China, Beijing is the only
one which remains on the list, although we expect it to be removed soon.
While we continue to closely monitor the situation, be assured that we
do have contingency plans. We will see what happens the rest of this
year and will be prepared to reevaluate the situation in late November
before the Advance Program is published.

For now, we would like to reassure you all that IEEE INFOCOM 2004
will be held as planned. We encourage you to submit your work before
July 1, 2003, and be considered to present your paper in a beautiful
setting overlooking Hong Kong Harbor.

You may also be interested to know that to welcome the world back to
Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has prepared "coupons" to
enhance overseas visitors' experience. These coupons will be available
for download from the INFOCOM website soon, and you can redeem them
when you come to Hong Kong next March.

We are well aware that there is concern about SARS among some <br>
potential authors. However, the lifting of the travel advisories on Hong
Kong <br>
by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the US Center for Disease
<br>
Control (CDC) affirms that SARS is under control. There has not been

any new SARS case in Hong Kong for the past several days. Of all the

cities under WHO travel advisory in the rest of China, Beijing is the
only <br>
one which remains on the list, although we expect it to be removed soon.

While we continue to closely monitor the situation, be assured that we

For now, we would like to reassure you all that IEEE INFOCOM 2004 <br>
will be held as planned. We encourage you to submit your work before
