If you know a port that is open (e.g. ssh, web (80), telnet, FTP, DNS) you can try probing one of those ports. However, this may appear to the remote host admin as unfriendly and blocks may then be added for your host.

We did some study on this a couple of years back (see http://www-iepm.slac.stanford.edu/monitoring/limit/limiting.html) mainly for the purpose of detecting ping rate limiting rather than outright blocking. We used a tool called synack (see http://www-iepm.slac.stanford.edu/tools/synack/, but note it only runs on Solaris) to probe different TCP ports and looked for the difference with ICMP pings.

Subject: [e2e] method to detect liveness of remote other than ping

Hi,

Usually, we detect remote end liveness by 'ping'
remote end IP address. I want to know, if ping packet
is filtered out by firewall which tools could be used
to detect remote end liveness?

thanks

jing shen

Hi,

Usually, we detect remote end liveness by 'ping'
remote end IP address. I want to know, if ping packet
is filtered out by firewall which tools could be used
to detect remote end liveness?

thanks

Dear Allison,

In the IPPM WG, I am in charge of a 'IPPM Metrics Registry' draft named =
draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt.=20

This registry was initially requested by the RMON WG to provide an 'IPPM =
Metrics Registry' usable by any MIBs. The WG last call of the =
draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt endded the 2 of June, 3 months =
ago.

I am puzzled about the status of the document which I still do not know. =
So I would be grateful if you could help me by telling me:

	- What is the current status of the draft ?=20
	- As the document draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt expires in =
October 2003, do I have to post a version 05 in order to (only) update =
the date of the document and keep it alive until the answer on its =
status is clearly given?

I suppose there might have been a bug in the processing, or there is =
something that I missed.
Anyway, your lights are welcome.

Very Best Regards
Emile

draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt

The latest draft of "IPPM Metrics Registry" has all the fixes
and changes suggested on this list, at previous IETF meetings,
and from our MIB advisor.

The co-chairs propose a Working Group last-call for this document,
draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt.

Please comment on whether or not you feel that this Internet-Draft
should be given to the Area Directors and the IESG for consideration as =
a Proposed Standard RFC.

Submit your comments to the IPPM mailing list or to the
chairs or I-D authors as you feel appropriate (although public
comments are preferred). This Working Group last call will end
on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 12:00 EST.

One pointer for the document is:

Emile

Objet : [ippm] Working Group Last Call:
draft-ietf-ippm-metrics-registry-04.txt

This Working Group last call will end
on Monday, June 2, 2003 at 12:00 EST.

	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-mib-04.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : IPPM reporting MIB
	Author(s)	: E. Stephan, J. Jewitt
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-mib-04.txt
	Pages : 78
	Date : 2003-10-24

This memo defines a portion of the Management Information Base (MIB)
designed for use with network management protocols in TCP/IP-based
internets.
In particular, this MIB specifies the objects used for managing the
results of the IPPM metrics measures, for pushing alarms, and for
reporting the measures results.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-mib-04.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-mib-04.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.

Dear Matt and Henk,

I don't see any entry regarding the agenda of the next meeting.

> I don't see any entry regarding the agenda of the next meeting.

Correct, we only just (30 mins) ago decided to ask for a slot. The MIB
will be one of the topics.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A One-way Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP)
	Author(s)	: S. Shalunov, B. Teitelbaum
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-07.txt
	Pages : 38
	Date : 2003-10-27

With growing availability of good time sources to network nodes, it
becomes increasingly possible to measure one-way IP performance
metrics with high precision. To do so in an interoperable manner, a
common protocol for such measurements is required. The One-Way
Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP) can measure one-way delay, as
well as other unidirectional characteristics, such as one-way loss.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-07.txt

To remove yourself from the IETF Announcement list, send a message to
ietf-announce-request with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-07.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-07.txt".

Dear ippm members,
We enhanced RD calculation to obtain two other density functions namely,
Late-packet Density (LD) and Early-packet Density (ED). We believe that these
changes allow us to characterize packet reordering more comprehensively and
also address the problem of orthogonality with respect to loss and
duplication.

Since we missed the deadline, we have posted the new draft on our website.

http://www.engr.colostate.edu/ece/Research/cnrl/draft-jayasumana-reorder-density-02.txt

We hope to discuss these changes at ippm meeting. We look forward to your
feedback on how best the concepts proposed in the draft can be used towards
achieving ippm goals in the area of metrics for packet reordering.
