This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your ietf.org mailing
list memberships. It includes your subscription info and how to use
it to change it or unsubscribe from a list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, ippm-request@ietf.org ) containing just the
word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be sent to
you with instructions.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A One-way Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP)
	Author(s)	: S. Shalunov, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-08.txt
	Pages : 38
	Date : 2004-5-4

With growing availability of good time sources to network nodes, it
becomes increasingly possible to measure one-way IP performance
metrics with high precision. To do so in an interoperable manner, a
common protocol for such measurements is required. The One-Way
Active Measurement Protocol (OWAMP) can measure one-way delay, as
well as other unidirectional characteristics, such as one-way loss.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-08.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-08.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-owdp-08.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

To make comparison with the old version easier:

The new version of the draft incorporates a change in treatment of the
TTL field. While previously it was not specified, it now allows to
measure the decrement of TTL as follows:

* The sender SHOULD set TTL of OWAMP-Test packets to 255 (the maximum
value); the only reason not to set it to 255 is inability to change
the value because of limitations of the socket interface that the
  implementation uses.

* The receiver SHOULD record the value of the TTL field in OWAMP-Test
packets it receives; the only reason not to record it is inability
to access the field value due to socket interface limitations (if a
receiver cannot record the actual value, it MUST record 255---a
value that is otherwise impossible in a received packet).

* The session results, when transmitted, now include TTL for each
  packet.

The uses of this technique remain unspecified in the document, but
include correlating delay changes to routing changes.

	------------------------------------------------------------

One change remains pending for the specification document: free-text
error messages in addition to error codes, as suggested by Al Morton
and others in the past.

Dear all

Bert proposes that IANA will assign the ID of futur metrics . I aggree
that this framework looks simpler that the one I propose. Is there any
comment regarding the acceptation of this modification ?

Regards
Emile

Dear all

Bert proposes that IANA will assign the ID of futur metrics . I aggree
that this framework looks simpler that the one I propose. Is there any
comment regarding the acceptation of this modification ?

Regards
Emile

Dear all,

We are a group of researchers at the Institute of=20
Telecommunications / University of Aveiro, involved in the=20
area of Traffic Measurements.

We have an implementation of OWAMP (version 8, May=20
2004)almost ready. Our aim now is to carry out conformance=20
tests (as extensive as possible). Thus we are looking for=20
other implementations of the OWAMP.

Do you know of any other implementations?

Best regards.

The http://e2epi.internet2.edu/owamp/ has not been updated to version 8 of the
specification yet.

Basically, it does not support any of the TTL functionality. (This includes the
data format changes to the Fetch-Session response.)

Also, the current version does not quite conform to the specification for
partial sessions yet. (The "Session Packets Sent" portions of the
"Stop-Sessions" message is currently always using the special value indicating
that the number of packets sent could not be determined.)

I believe these are the only areas of non-conformance at this time. I intend to
address this over the next two weeks.
