Dear all,

A new version of the draft is available.=20

Abstract:
The IETF IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) working group has standardized
metrics for measuring end-to-end performance between 2 points. This memo
defines 2 sets of metrics to extend these end-to-end ones. It defines
spatial metrics for measuring the performance of segments along a path
and metrics for measuring the performance of a group of users in
multiparty communications.

Best Regards
Emile

Hi,

A New Internet-Draft is available:
 http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-stephan-isp-templates-00.txt=20

Abstract:
=09
Flows and packets observations require several levels of
aggregations. Currently switchs and routers analyse flows and export
flow information using Netflow. Aggregators are starting to use
Netflow or IPFIX to collect basic information and to export
   aggregated information.

In this context, this memo presents potential interoperability issues
and proposes to standardize a set of templates to facilitate the
exchange of flows and measurements information between ISP.

Regards
Emile

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications=20
SAMPLING THE INTERNET: TECHNIQUES AND APPLICATIONS

Scope

As the Internet continues to grow rapidly in size and complexity,=20
it has become increasingly clear that its evolution is closely=20
tied to a detailed understanding of network traffic. Network traffic=20
measurements are invaluable for a wide range of tasks such as network=20
capacity planning, traffic engineering, fault diagnosis, application=20
and protocol performance profiling, and anomaly detection.

This large and diverse set of applications raises the question of=20
how to monitor the Internet in an efficient and scalable way. In the=20
case of active monitoring (where probe packets are sent across the=20
network to infer specific properties) the scalability issue arises=20
from the size of the Internet and the potentially large number of=20
end systems that one needs to instrument, as well as the number of=20
probing experiments that one must conduct.

Intuitively, sampling is an essential component of scalable Internet
monitoring. Broadly speaking, sampling is the process of making=20
partial observations of a system of interest, and drawing conclusions=20
about the full behaviour of the system from these limited observations.=20
The observation problem is concerned with minimising information loss=20
whilst reducing the volume of collected data. It is this reduction=20
that makes the collection process scalable. The way in which the=20
partial information is transformed into knowledge of the system as=20
a whole is the inversion problem. The inversion is in general=20
imperfect and error-prone.

The aim of this issue is to bring together work from researchers=20
and practitioners devoted to the understanding of the practical and=20
theoretical issues related to all aspects of sampling the Internet.=20
In this context, sampling may take various forms. A classic example=20
is to observe only a subset of the packets carried over a link, and
then estimate traffic parameters which apply to all packets.=20
Alternatively, one could target a subset of routers with packet=20
probes in order to infer network characteristics such as the=20
topology or routing matrix.=20

Examples abound from a wide variety of application areas within=20
Internet measurement, management, and analysis. Independent of=20
subject area, papers will be in scope if they focus substantially=20
on the sampling aspects of the problem under study, for example by=20
exploring the tradeoff between observation and inversion processes,=20
revealing the limitations of inversion techniques, analysing their=20
properties, or proposing new ones, or by providing new insights by=20
explicitly recognizing the impact of implicit sampling in many=20
measurement studies.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

- Sampling and inverting traffic metrics with passive or active systems.
- Internet end-to-end measurements seen from a sampling standpoint.
- Sampling aspects of network topology inference.
- Impact of sampling on anomaly detection.
- Mechanisms for sampling live Internet traffic or collected traces.
- Theoretical studies of the sampling/inversion problem=20
  (e.g., accuracy, complexity).
- Distributed and adaptive sampling techniques.
- New sampling methods.

Hi, Al,
I just got time to go through the composition metrics draft. Got some
comments here.
The inaccuracy might be also caused by interdomain routing choices
additional to the intro-domain ones. Doing the sub-path measurement for
each domain might conceal the complete path when there are multipath to
choose from the source to the final destination via several domains. for
example, the packet can go to the final destination via domain 1, 2 to
3. it may also travel through domain 1, 4 to 3. Therefore, the
sub-measurement carried out at the same time interval does not solve the
path problem.
Also, the gateway functions between domains may also address inaccuracy.
E.g., multiplexing, translation, deconding and encoding will all put
costs to the complete measurement result.
I also got a question here that you might help. Why don't just send
the packets from the source to the final destination and collect the
sub-path results on the way?

Cheers,
Lei

I already have two which I will post this evening.

Dear IPPM members,
It is unfortunate that we could not come to a decision on reorder
metrics by April 30th, as planned in the last meeting.

We (the authors of draft-jayasumana-reorder-density-04.txt
<http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-jayasumana-reorder-density-04.txt>
) will not be able to make a presentation at the meeting. However, the
wonderful thing about ietf is the ability to present your views even
when you are unable to attend the meetings. So, we would once again like
to drive our point of comparison between the metrics. Here are links to
a document in both pdf and ps, which contains comparison between the
metrics. This document also contains reordering measurements over the
Internet, using various metrics.

PDF:
http://www.cnrl.colostate.edu/Reorder/compmetrics_for_ietf.pdf
PS:
