Hi all,

Martin Swany here -- long-time IPPM lurker. This note is
to advise the group of developments surrounding the
draft document draft-niccolini-ippm-storetraceroutes.

In January, I met with Saverio, Sandra and Juergen at
NEC in Heidelberg regarding the state of the draft and
its relation to the work going on in the Grid Forum's
Network Measurement Working Group (NM-WG). In
the NM-WG we have been working toward standard
XML-based schemata for exchanging network
performance information.

One of the key ideas in the current NM-WG schema
is to "factor out" metadata from data to reduce the
redundant information in repeated exchanges. These
ideas seem to map well to the traceroute work and
we agreed to apply them, while maintaining name
compatibility with the DISMAN MIB.

In addition we agreed to investigate a joint standard
between the two groups. The chairs of the working
groups have been consulted and no one seems to
have any issue with it. Obviously there is no formal
way to proceed yet, but we will continue to discuss
it and/or make it up as we go along. Please let us
know if that poses a problem for anyone or if you have
any suggestions.

regards,
martin

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Spatial Composition of Metrics
	Author(s)	: A. Morton, E. Stephan
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-00.txt
	Pages : 23
	Date : 2006-2-28

This memo utilizes IPPM metrics that are applicable to both complete
paths and sub-paths, and defines relationships to compose a complete
path metric from the sub-path metrics with some accuracy w.r.t. the
actual metrics. This is called Spatial Composition in RFC 2330. The
memo refers to the Framework for Metric Composition, and provides
background and motivation for combining metrics to derive others.
The descriptions of several composed metrics and statistics follow.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-00.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Just a reminder that PAM 2006 is coming up soon. We have put together a
good program with a bunch of exciting papers and topics. The program is
available on the PAM 2006 web page. Registration is now open. Please
consider joining us in Adelaide to discuss some very cutting edge
measurement research.

PAM 2006 web page: http://www.pam2006.org

Hope to see you in Australia!

Mark Allman
