A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Reporting IP Performance Metrics to Users
	Author(s)	: S. Shalunov
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-00.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2006-6-5

The aim of this document is to define a small set of metrics that are
robust, easy to understand, orthogonal, relevant, and easy to
compute. The IPPM WG has defined a large number of richly
parameterized metrics because network measurement has many purposes.
Often, the ultimate purpose is to report a concise set of metrics
describing a network's state to an end user. It is for this purpose
that the present set of metrics is defined.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-00.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-00.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-reporting-00.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

Dear all,=20

We are currently working on the next version of the draft on how to =
store traceroute measurements. Following some feedback we received on =
the ippm mailing list, we would like to also include MPLS results, since =
some traceroute implementations report them. However, the way such =
results are reported may differ quite significantly for different =
implementations. Below, are three examples we found, but there are also =
others:

1) 10.150.44.14 [MPLS: Labels 71 Exp 0] 16 msec 17 msec 16 msec
2) 211.33.7.5 [MPLS:Labels 117/71 Exp 0] 8 msec
3) 10.1.13.2 (10.1.13.2) 0.866 ms 0.746 ms 0.724 ms MPLS =
Label=3D100912 CoS=3D0 TTL=3D1 S=3D1

We would like to get precise feedback from the mailing list about a set =
of parameters that we should include.
Does anyone on the list have a strong opinion on this?

Thanks,
Sandra

Dear Sandra,

I believe that the question what can be reported must
center on the protocol fields more than on what the
tools actually do report. A special tool may=20
report incomplete information from the MPLS stack.

In each level of the stack we have:

Label 20 bits
Class of Service (experimental) 3 bits
TTL 8 bits
(see http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc3032.txt)

IMO only the first two are useful for reporting.

Does anyone know if CoS usually changes in the
label stack? Else it would be ok to report it only
once for a stack.

Kind regards,
Carsten.

The eighth Passive and Active Measurement conference will be held April
5-6th, 2007 in Louvain-la-neuve in Belgium. This event focuses on
research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis
techniques. The conference's goal is to provide a forum for current work
in its early stages. Original papers are invited from the research and
operations communities on topics including, but not limited to: =20
* Active Network Measurements=20
* Passive Network Measurements=20
* Performance Metrics=20
* Traffic Statistics=20
* Measurement Visualization=20

The PAM steering committee believes that releasing measurement data
allows for better science to be conducted in the field of network
measurement. Therefore, an award will be given at PAM 2007 for the best
paper based on a new dataset that the authors are releasing for
community use in subsequent research. To qualify, a paper must
significantly utilize a dataset that has been collected for the work
presented in the paper. Further, the dataset must be freely available to
any researcher. Authors should flag papers they wish to be considered
for this award with a footnote on the first page of the paper. Novel
datasets are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen
from the set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a
committee made up of a subset of the program and steering committees.=20

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Traceroute Measurements Information Model and XML Data Model
	Author(s)	: S. Niccolini, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-storetraceroutes-00.txt
	Pages : 43
	Date : 2006-6-22

This memo describes a standard way to store traceroute measurements.
To better address the traceroute measurements storing issue, the
authors first of all give a definition of the traceroute tool,
describe the tool itself as well as its parameters and the default
values on the most common operating systems and the output results
that can be stored. Afterwards, the common information model with
the base elements of the traceroute measurement storing is defined
dividing the information elements in two semantically separated
groups (configuration elements and results ones). Moreover an
additional element is defined to relate configuration elements and
results ones by means of a common unique identifier. On the basis of
the information model a data model is then proposed in order to
actually store the traceroute measurements.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

	Title : Defining Network Capacity
	Author(s)	: P. Chimento, J. Ishac
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-bw-capacity-03.txt
	Pages : 17
	Date : 2006-6-23

Measuring capacity is a task that sounds simple, but in reality can
be quite complex. In addition, the lack of a unified nomenclature on
this subject makes it increasingly difficult to properly build, test,
and use techniques and tools built around these constructs. This
document provides definitions for the terms 'Capacity' and 'Available
Capacity' related to IP traffic traveling between a source and
destination in an IP network. By doing so, we hope to provide a
common framework for the discussion and analysis of a diverse set of
current and future estimation techniques.

Folks-

Recently I have noticed *a bunch* of work in the measurement
community on identifying the application that generated some flow by
watching the torrent of traffic. These techniques go beyond
port-based identification to look for traffic that - for whatever
reason - uses non-standard ports. There are numerous applications
of such techniques, from setting policy to looking for malicious
intruders. I have pitched the idea of an IRTF IMRG workshop on this
topic to a few people and they generally seem receptive. I would
like to hold a bar BOF on Wed night of IETF week (Jul/12) at 2230 to
chat with folks who are interested in some unstructured kibitzing on
the topic.

(The time is sort of the best I can do ... I hate the current IETF
schedule. If you want to chat with me about this at another time,
just drop me a note and we can likely find a few minutes.)

allman
(IMRG chair)

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Framework for Metric Composition
	Author(s)	: A. Morton, S. Van den Berghe
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-framework-compagg-01.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 2006-6-28

This memo describes a framework for composing and aggregating metrics
(both in time and in space) defined by RFC 2330 and developed by the
IPPM working group. The framework describes the generic composition
and aggregation mechanisms. It provides a basis for additional
documents that implement this framework for detailed, and practically
useful, compositions and aggregations of metrics.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : Spatial Composition of Metrics
	Author(s)	: A. Morton, E. Stephan
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-spatial-composition-01.txt
	Pages : 24
	Date : 2006-6-28

This memo utilizes IPPM metrics that are applicable to both complete
paths and sub-paths, and defines relationships to compose a complete
path metric from the sub-path metrics with some accuracy w.r.t. the
actual metrics. This is called Spatial Composition in RFC 2330. The
memo refers to the Framework for Metric Composition, and provides
background and motivation for combining metrics to derive others.
The descriptions of several composed metrics and statistics follow.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : A Two-way Active Measurement Protocol (TWAMP)
	Author(s)	: J. Babiarz, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-twamp-01.txt
	Pages : 16
	Date : 2006-6-29

The IPPM One-way Active Measurement Protocol [OWAMP] provides a
common protocol for measuring one-way metrics between network
devices. OWAMP [OWAMP] can be used in both directions
independently to measure one-way metrics in both directions between
two network elements. However, it does not accommodate round-trip
or two-way measurements. This draft proposes a Two-way Active
Measurement Protocol, based on the One-way Active Measurement
Protocol [OWAMP], that will accommodate two-way or round-trip
measurements.
