Hi

I read carefully the current IPPM drafts on composition, on reporting
measurement to users, storing traceroute storage.

I get to the conclusion that the right for the WG to work simultaneously
on the different aspects of these topics was to collect in a IANA
registry the best current practices in terms of reporting IP Performance
Metrics (IPPM) measurements for composition, to users and to end-users.

The first version is available on line at=20

Emile

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the IP Performance Metrics Working Group of the IETF.

Title : IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) for spatial and multicast
	Author(s)	: E. Stephan, et al.
	Filename	: draft-ietf-ippm-multimetrics-01.txt
	Pages : 29
	Date : 2006-7-10

The IETF IP Performance Metrics (IPPM) working group has standardized
metrics for measuring end-to-end performance between 2 points. This
memo defines 2 sets of metrics to extend these end-to-end ones. It
defines spatial metrics for measuring the performance of segments
along a path and metrics for measuring the performance of a group of
users in multiparty communications.

A URL for this Internet-Draft is:
http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-multimetrics-01.txt

To remove yourself from the I-D Announcement list, send a message to
i-d-announce-request@ietf.org with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message.
You can also visit https://www1.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/I-D-announce
to change your subscription settings.

Internet-Drafts are also available by anonymous FTP. Login with the username
"anonymous" and a password of your e-mail address. After logging in,
type "cd internet-drafts" and then
	"get draft-ietf-ippm-multimetrics-01.txt".

A list of Internet-Drafts directories can be found in
http://www.ietf.org/shadow.html
or ftp://ftp.ietf.org/ietf/1shadow-sites.txt

Internet-Drafts can also be obtained by e-mail.

Send a message to:
	mailserv@ietf.org.
In the body type:
	"FILE /internet-drafts/draft-ietf-ippm-multimetrics-01.txt".

NOTE:	The mail server at ietf.org can return the document in
MIME-encoded form by using the "mpack" utility. To use this
feature, insert the command "ENCODING mime" before the "FILE"
command. To decode the response(s), you will need "munpack" or
a MIME-compliant mail reader. Different MIME-compliant mail readers
exhibit different behavior, especially when dealing with
"multipart" MIME messages (i.e. documents which have been split
up into multiple messages), so check your local documentation on
	how to manipulate these messages.

Below is the data which will enable a MIME compliant mail reader
implementation to automatically retrieve the ASCII version of the
Internet-Draft.

I was not able to attend IETF 66 because of travel constraints.

In response to a comment by Matt Mathis (if I could identify the voice
correctly) I want to point out that the intention of the draft is to
define parameters for metrics that are already defined and not
introduce any new metrics or redefine any existing ones.

I also wanted to address comments in Al's talk and got this far:

Re the subtitle: It is true that if you hold scissors out, you're less
likely to hurt yourself if you fall while running. If we are to
continue the analogy, as far as I am concerned, the point of other
people not running with scissors is that they don't stab me
accidentally. Whether they stab themselves is entirely their choice.
It's not a matter of personal safety only, but of common safety.

At this point in the audio, it skipped back and started replaying
Emile's comment and the back-and-forth with Matt and then continued to
repeat the rest of the talk that Matt was giving for me. I was hoping
it might start playing the right thing again after it looped, but
instead it fell into silence. So, I never heard much of what Al said
past the subtitle. Based on slides, I don't think we're in any major
disagreement. Looks like one of the main points of contention is the
technical issue of the treatment of lost packets (but I'm largely
inferring this). I would like to continue the conversation on the
mailing list and in San Diego. I think it would help to move the
discussion forward if suggestions on changes to the draft were a bit
more specific.

I don't know if it came across this way in the document or not, but:

The point of the draft is to take the huge and richly parameterized
space of the various IPPM metrics and select a small set of metrics
that would be suitable for presenting as results of on-demand
measurements to end users. Such selection has to happen somewhere.
Humans don't end up bombarded with the raw results (even if they were,
they wouldn't be able to interpret them). Some tool, somewhere, takes
the measurement and produces an ad hoc reporting summary. These
summaries cannot be compared across tools (in addition, they might not
always be robust, easy to understand, or relevant). Currently, the de
facto standard is ``what ping prints''; this is problematic, both
because some metrics are suboptimal and, even more importantly,
because ping output itself is not standard and varies by version and
by platform. Based on the work of this group, I think we can do
better than ``what ping prints''. I took a stab at it in the draft.
It's clearly no gospel. I do believe we can take the work that IPPM
has produced and come up with a set of reportable metrics that's OK.
(It won't be perfect, but that's OK, too: we can produce a set of
decent metrics, and, more importantly, it'll be possible to compare
output across tools.)

Reminder .... tonight we're having a quite informal bar bof on possibly
thinking about application identification within the IMRG. We're
meeting at 2230 in the bar of the Delta hotel.

Lots of people have asked, so here are several bullets from the IMRG
bar BOF about possibly thinking about application identification
within the RG in some fashion:

  * A few areas are interested in this:

general knowledge about what is traversing a network
        (understanding, trending, modeling, etc.)
security - in terms of traffic analysis
determining which flows to apply which QoS mechanisms to
        (e.g., rate-limit p2p traffic)
security - in terms of intrusion detection systems attempting
        to find attacks

  * Consensus was that a first workshop that was quite lightweight
would be a reasonable first step. Open call for one page talk
descriptions would be the ticket to entry. Small-ish yet
diverse crowd (need people from measurement, signal processing,
    security, etc.).

  * A second workshop that was more formal (possibly with papers)
could also be considered on a longer time-scale.

  * My action item was to puzzle through some of the initial
logistics of a workshop and get an organizing committee formed
    up.

Additional opinions on any of the above, or anything not included in
the above would certainly be welcome.

Hi,

I reread IPFIX AS regarding IPPM aspects.

I think that it (section 2.5) may refer to the RFCs which define the
IPPM metrics presented.

As IPFIX (section 2.7) can also be used to transfer metrics result I
consider that the Applicability Statement has to propose to transfer the
result conjointly with its corresponding metric identifier in the IANA
IPPM registry
(http://www.iana.org/assignments/ianaippmmetricsregistry-mib).=20

Note that the draft
http://tools.ietf.org/wg/ippm/draft-ietf-ippm-multimetrics/ includes
pure passive metrics. So there will be metric identifiers for passive
metrics in the IANA IPPM metrics registry.

Regards
Emile
