There was disagreement about their definitions, some (or all of which)
were incompatible with HTML4.

See <http://www.w3.org/html/wg/tracker/issues/118>.

Rather than fixing them, the spec author proposed to remove them, which
in the end got the least objections.

This definition was just removed from the Editor's draft of HTML5.
Should it get published as a Working Draft, the reference in the IANA
registry will be dangling.

The simplest possible fix will be to make the link go specifically to
the current Working Draft
(<http://www.w3.org/TR/2011/WD-html5-20110113/links.html#rel-archives>),
which is immutable.

What are the other options here? This relation is important (well, to
me at least) - among other things, I use it a great deal in paging.
Are the options to either get another standard to define it or
introduce it independent of a media type?

I should have mentioned that these four were "update" requests; that is,
they are already in the link relations registry; see
<http://www.iana.org/assignments/link-relations/link-relations.xml>.

So the only effect is that we're not going to change the registrations
we already have.

Yes, OK by me as the submitter to move it to "declined".

Hi,

the HTML WG has finally decided on the open issue of link relation
metadata (see <http://www.w3.org/html/wg/tracker/issues/124> and
<http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2011Mar/0401.html>).

On the other hand, the base issue on whether the HTML spec should use
the IANA registry is not yet decided, but getting a survey:
<http://www.w3.org/html/wg/tracker/issues/27> and
<http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2011Mar/0349.html>.

Mike, should we go ahead and look at the APP data again, or would it
make more sense to wait on a decision on ISSUE-27 before proceeding?
(After all, if the HTML WG doesn't care about harmonization with this
registry then adding the flags provides little benefit, but quite some
overhead).

Best regards, Julian
