This is a reminder, sent out once a month, about your
securemulticast.org mailing list memberships. It includes your
subscription info and how to use it to change it or unsubscribe from a
list.

You can visit the URLs to change your membership status or
configuration, including unsubscribing, setting digest-style delivery
or disabling delivery altogether (e.g., for a vacation), and so on.

In addition to the URL interfaces, you can also use email to make such
changes. For more info, send a message to the '-request' address of
the list (for example, mailman-request@securemulticast.org) containing
just the word 'help' in the message body, and an email message will be
sent to you with instructions.

If you have questions, problems, comments, etc, send them to
mailman-owner@securemulticast.org. Thanks!

Folks,

This is a last call on draft-ietf-msec-srtp-tesla-03.txt.
Please post your comments before March 1.

Note: following the discussion on the list few months ago, the draft now
states that a recipient SHOULD drop a packet if it does not manage to
authenticate it because it arrived too late.

Folks,

The security ADs have asked for an MSEC review of the following ID
(which is handled in mmusic):

http://www.ietf.org/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-mmusic-kmgmt-ext-13.txt

The ID is indeed very relevant to MSEC, in that it describes how to use
key management protocols in order to secure the data in a potentially
one to many setting. Please take the time to review the ID and comment to
the list.

I've been reading a lot about multicast and group security and I am
having hard time finding information about specific applications and
motivation, especially for decentralized solutions. One application
that comes to mind is group chat and shared collaborative workspace.
But there must be others...

I am wondering if people could share with me their thoughts and
knowledge about *specific* applications that require multicast
security and group security. Also, which specific applications require
(or can benefit from) *decentralized* key agreement solutions? Which
ones assume *centralized* solutions? I am looking for both
single-sender and multi-sender applications. Don't limit yourself to
collaborative applications; maybe there are some involving sensors or
multicast tree management, or some military applications? I am looking
for specific descriptions, not just general areas.

Are there systems *deployed in the world* today that utilize multicast
and group security? Which ones? Which schemes do they use?

Are there examples in the past where we did not have group security in
place, but we wish we did? I'd like someone to make a compelling case
why all this stuff is necessary. If you work on designing group
security schemes, which big problem are you fixing?

Which prototype systems have been implemented and are available for
download and/or purchase?

Once I get responses from individual contributors, I will compile this
information and either send it to the list or provide it to the
individual contributors. Or, you can post your responses to the list.

Thank you,

Roger Khazan

Martin,

According to the I-D tracker this draft is under IESG review.
(And this is consistent with my memory...)

Folks,

This is a last call for the I-D:

draft-ietf-msec-srtp-tesla-03.txt

Recall that in the last MSEC meeting there was a discussion whether to
join this draft with the srtp-tesla draft (or alternatively with mikey)
but the consensus in the end was to keep it as a separate document.

Please post your comments by Friday, March 4.

Best,

Thomas and Ran

I don't recall any such discussion. I don't recall ever considering
merging srtp-tesla with anything. There is another draft floating
around on how to signal srtp-tesla in MIKEY. I offered to put that in
the srtp-tesla draft along with a Security Descriptions signaling
section. We decided not to do that.

Folks,

After nearly 5 years in SMuG and MSEC, I've decided its time to step-down
as co-chair of MSEC.

My day-job has a focus away from multicast security. In addition, I'm
currently also a co-chair of a different group (NB. doing 2 co-chair tasks
is rather a handful:)

With Ran's agreement, Lakshminath Dondeti has kindly accepted the role of
the new MSEC Co-Chair. Lakshminath has been involved in multicast security
since the SMuG days in 1999, and thus he is aware of the history and the
work-items of SMuG and MSEC.

As usual, I will still be attending the IETF and MSEC meetings, and will
continue to handle the MSEC mailing-list and MSEC website.

For the transition period, please copy Lakshminath on your emails to
Ran/myself concerning drafts and other MSEC issues.

Thanks very much for everybody's kind help with running MSEC. Its been a
pleasure working closely with the SMuG/MSEC community.

Regards.

thomas
