These MUSTs do make sense, I agree with them.

I have no problem with this new field, as it resembles one that my GSAKMP
implementation already had in its application-specific PT. so this is
simply relocating where that info is found in the PT structure.

Hi all,

Cross-area and IESG level reviews resulted in significant changes to the
SRTP-TESLA document and (thanks to Mark for his efforts) a new revision
that incorporates those changes is now available.

This is to announce a 24-hr window ending at 1:30 PM PT on Oct 7, Friday
for a quick review of the revised version at the MSEC level.

thanks and regards,
Lakshminath

(I am asking the following Q's as an MSEC contributor)

In reviewing the proposed changes to MIKEY specified in msec-newtype-keyid,
I wonder if this draft is making a fundamental change to RFC 3830. My
understanding has been that MIKEY is a point to point protocol. While
writing what is now 4046, we worked with the assumption that MIKEY doesn't
have a rekey message that is broadcast/multicast to the group. Instead,
rekey entails, from 3830 "
Note that
MIKEY does not provide re-keying in the GKMARCH sense, only updating
of the keys by normal unicast messages." BTW, is multicast abnormal? :-)

Unless I am misreading, the 3GPP intended use of newtype-keyid is doing
exactly the opposite of the above statement, which is to use MIKEY to send
a new group key protected with the previous group key. Nothing wrong with
that, GDOI and GSAKMP do this. But, I wonder whether 3830 needs to be
revised since the extensions are *contradicting* original text.

The other issue, which is more urgent is that the newtype-keyid needs an
update to the security considerations section. The proposed modification
being quite different from MIKEY as in 3830 brings up very important
security issues. GDOI and GSAKMP are good references in identifying these
issues. My understanding of the 3GPP use is that the key update messages
are not signed, instead only protected with a MAC. What are the
implications of that? Note that SRTP packets might be source authenticated
with TESLA, so group authentication of key update messages might be an
interesting proposition!

Thoughts?

thanks and regards,
Lakshminath

Actually there is an implementation: gsakmpd. It's a prototype written
in C++. The latest version is 0.8.1. The code is not maintained any more
because the developers switched to a java implementation (which may or
may not be available for the public...).

I made some changes in the code to compile it on an actual gcc compiler
on linux. the code compiles fine now, but you'll have segfaults at
runtime. I'll send you the daemon in a sep. email.

I'm not aware of any other implementations of GSAKMP...

Kind regards
Reto

Chair hat off

Folks, please note the following changes in the current revision -01- of
MIKEY-RSA-R:

We note that we may need MIKEY to establish multiple TGKs with a single run
of the MIKEY protocol (one of the use cases is to establish a group key and
unicast key simultaneously; and there are others as well). We put in some
text along those lines, but there are some loose ends associated with how
exactly to do that. We plan to discuss them at the Vancouver meeting.

There is one new sentence in the abstract, a new paragraph in the
Introduction and finally a new Section 4 associated with this feature.

best,
Lakshminath

Hi Mark and Elisabetta,

Congratulations! We thank Mark especially for addressing many last minute
