                          Luis M. Contreras

The MULTIMOB group has specified a base solution to support IP
multicasting in a PMIPv6 domain [RFC6224]. In this document, some
enhancements to the base solution are described. These enhancements
include the use of a multicast tree mobility anchor as the
topological anchor point for multicast traffic, as well as a direct
routing option where the MAG can provide access to multicast content
in the local network. These enhancements provide benefits such as
reducing multicast traffic replication and supporting different
   PMIPv6 deployments scenarios.

Hi Dirk,

Thank you for the submission.
We have a slot reserved on dmm as possible future work.
In that presentation if you can talk about the general problem space
of dmm and dmm multicast rather than a specific solution, I think that
will be good.
Please point out the gaps and why we need to work on it.

Regards,

Behcet

Dear Juan-Carlos et al.,

just a quick response from a first browse through the document:

  Section 3:

  * The statement
"The MTMA connects to the MAG as described in [RFC6224] and it can
reuse native PMIPv6 features such as tunnel establishment and
    security [RFC5213], heartbeat [RFC5847], etc."
is pretty vague and unclear to me - tunnel management of PMIP is
between
MAGs and LMAs ... but MTMA cannot act like an LMA (it has no
MN-specific state),
so how would it be able to perform dynamic tunnel management?

  * I don't understand the sense of "3.3.2. MAG as Multicast Router" -
if there is only one static upstream to the MTMA, a dynamic routing
protocol at the MAG seems useless.

  * You should address and resolve the problem of IPv4 traffic in
accordance
    with RFC 5213.

  Section 4:

  * In Section "4.3.1. MAG as MLD Proxy" you speak about "every one of
the MLD proxy instances invoked in the MAG" - why multiple instances?
    What shall each instance do?

  * In Section "4.3.1.1. Multicast Establishment" it is shown in the flow
chart that membership queries are issued from the MR - these are
periodic
queries which are unrelated to handoffs - thus they do not operate
synchronized
and therefore generate a possibly large delay - was this intended?

  * In Section "4.3.2. MAG as multicast router" - I find a section of
essentially
zero content. This is unfortunate, since the deployment of a
multicast routing
protocol in a PMIP domain is of enhanced delicacy and full of traps,
as we have
seen from the repeated (fruitless) attempts Hitoshi has made. This
should be explained
in utmost precision, as there is no "out-of-the-box" way to do it.

So far for a first scratch - I'll be happy to review a more profound
version of the draft in detail.

Cheer from the Cebit,

Thomas

I have reviewed this draft.

Thanks for writing the draft, I think it provides solid advice. There are a couple issues in the draft but I have decided to send the draft forward for an IETF last call. But I would appreciate a quick response of my issues and if necessary, a draft update this week.

A couple of comments below:

> Therefore, in this document it is RECOMMENDED that adjacent upstream
> multicast routers enable the explicit tracking function for IP
> multicast communications on wireless and mobile networks, if they
> have enough resources.

But draft-ietf-pim-explicit-tracking is an informational reference. I think you should loosen the language above (maybe "it is recommended ...") unless you want to introduce a normative reference and possible wait until the other document is approved as an RFC.

I had some trouble parsing the recommendations here. Are you recommending 150 seconds when explicit tracking is in use? Or only when there are > 200 hosts? And in the second paragraph, what do you mean by "having higher capacity of the resource"? What resource? Did you just mean to say "... a wireless link with higher capacity"?

> a gradual manner until it exceeds the mobile host's lifetime.

Perhaps you meant mobile host's binding lifetime? :-) Or some MLD lifetime value in the hosts? And what do you do if the various mobile hosts have different lifetimes?

> For a router

Just say "having higher capacity or is known to be reliable".

I do not understand what route optimization has to do with this, given that it does not support multicast... Suggest deleting the route optimization part and just leaving the PMIP part of the last sentence.

Please expand this a bit. Explicit tracking in the routers does not work well when older IGMP/MLD versions are in the hosts? How widespread are those older implementations? Can you provide some further advice?

The IESG has received a request from the Multicast Mobility WG (multimob)
to consider the following document:
- 'Tuning the Behavior of IGMP and MLD for Routers in Mobile and Wireless
   Networks'
  <draft-ietf-multimob-igmp-mld-tuning-04.txt> as an Informational RFC

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits
final comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2012-03-20. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the
beginning of the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

IGMP and MLD are the protocols used by hosts and multicast routers to
exchange their IP multicast group memberships with each other. This
document describes the ways of IGMPv3 and MLDv2 protocol optimization
for mobility, and aims to become a guideline for tuning of IGMPv3/
MLDv2 Queries and timer and counter values.

This is to announce that we have requested a slot for a Bar BoF in
Paris on Fixed Mobile Convergence as follows:

Tuesday March 28 at 19:30

There has been (business) announcements in the internet like beyond
stating that FMC is currently still a hot topic (and finally a MUST
facing decreasing revenue challenges) for many network and service
operators - reflected in the manufacturing industry for infrastructure
equipment as well as user terminals - and creating requirements on the
interworking between fixed and mobile networks which - from an Intarea
point of view - focus on
 - User Equipment identification and authentication,
 - Femto Access Point management,
 - user device type identification and
 - mobility considerations e.g. as support within fixed networks and
differentiation on different session flows from terminal/user
perspective.

see also http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-xue-intarea-fmc-ps-00

In the Bar BOF we want to discuss these issues and eventually others.

If you have a presentation to make, drop us a note.

Hi,
I'm not sure about how the MAG match the MTMA? Here are two ways in my
opinion.
1) The MAG can ONLY matches ONE MTMA while MTMA can match some MAGs
2) The multicast address can be divided into different sets and each MTMA
is responsible for each specific set, in that way, MAG can match different
MTMAs.
Both can avoid tunnel convergence. However, maybe you have another idea.
What's your choice?
Regards,
Aaron

Hi Jari,

Thank you for your review.

I got it.
Please read the following comments and tell us whether our changes are
Ok for you.
We will submit the revised draft soon just after we receive your reply.

We will change "RECOMMENDED" to "recommended".

Thank you for pointing out.
It should be changed to;
"This document proposes 150 seconds for the [Query Interval] value
by changing the Querier's Query Interval Code (QQIC) field specified
in the IGMP/MLD Query message, for the case that a router enables
the explicit tracking function and potentially operates a large
number of member hosts such as more than 200 hosts on the wireless
  link."

> And in the second paragraph, what do you
> mean by "having higher capacity of the resource"? What resource? Did
> you just mean to say "... a wireless link with higher capacity"?

It should be; "a router enabling the explicit tracking function
attaches to a wireless link with higher capacity".

>> a gradual manner until it exceeds the mobile host's lifetime.
>
> Perhaps you meant mobile host's binding lifetime? :-) Or some MLD
> lifetime value in the hosts? And what do you do if the various mobile
> hosts have different lifetimes?

Well, this discussion may need more text, while the detail discussion
is not the target of this draft, because it depends on mobile
protocols.
Hence I'll change the paragraph to;

"In situations where Mobile IPv6 [8] is used, when the home agent
implements multicast router functionality and multicast data packets
are tunneled to and from the home agent, the home agent MAY want to
slow down Query periodicity. It happens, for example, when the home
agent detects network congestion. In this case, the home agent
starts forwarding queries with the default [Query Interval] value
and increases the value in a gradual manner.

Or do you think it is better to just remove this whole paragraph as it
is not congruent to this draft?

>> For a router
>> that attaches to a wireless link having higher capacity of the

Thanks. Done.

Will do. Thanks.

Done.

Older IGMP/MLD protocols have a report suppression mechanism. It means
older hosts do not respond their report when they hear reports having
the same record.

We will change the above sentense with the following sentense.

"One of the reasons not being interoperable with older IGMP/MLD
protocols is that the explicit tracking function does not work
properly with older IGMP/MLD protocols because of a report
suppression mechanism; a host would not send a pending IGMP/MLD
report if a similar report was sent by another listener on the link."

Again, thank you for your review.

Regards,

IGMP and MLD are the protocols used by hosts and multicast routers to
exchange their IP multicast group memberships with each other. This
document describes the ways of IGMPv3 and MLDv2 protocol optimization
for mobility, and aims to become a guideline for tuning of IGMPv3/
MLDv2 Queries and timer and counter values.

Title: IP Multicast Use Case Analysis for PMIPv6.based Distributed Mobility Management
Creation date: 2012-03-12
WG ID: Individual Submission
Number of pages: 13

Abstract:
As mobile networks are moving towards distributed mobility management,
the application of IP multicast is needed to provide efficient
content delivery on the network. This document describes use cases
when IP multicast is applied on PMIPv6-based DMM, and analyzes
problems focused on user plane issues.

Since there was no IPR disclosures filed on this document, therefore
there was no question of filing the IPR disclosures with proper
provisions. So the shepherd thought that this item (Item 7) in the
shepherd document was properly answered.

I think the author already answered this.

Hi all,

Our previous mail on March 6 announcing FMC Bar Bof had by mistake the
date as March 28.

Tuesday March 27 at 19:30 or 7:30pm is the correct one.

We are going to send another mail once this is confirmed by IETF.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks to Wassim, Med, Sophie for waking us up :-).

Behcet

Yes, that could be done.

However, isn't it better to get the sherpherd document Item 7 to be
modified slightly, instead of the current form:
 (7) Has each author confirmed that any and all appropriate IPR
disclosures required for full conformance with the provisions of BCP
78 and BCP 79 have already been filed. If not, explain why.

To something like:

 (7) If an IPR claim has been made, has each author confirmed that any
and all appropriate IPR
disclosures required for full conformance with the provisions of BCP
78 and BCP 79 have already been filed. If not, explain why.

Then the shepherd could simply reply N/A to this item if no IPR claim exist=
s.

The specific question in the write-up is "Has each author confirmed...?" =
not
"Have any disclosure been made?"

This is normally tested by an email to each author with the specific =
question
"Can you confirm...?" and a response from each author.

Thanks,

No, that is not sufficient. We have had several occasions where no
disclosure was made, only to find out after publication that one of the
authors of the document was a patent holder on technology that was in
the draft. We do actually want you to ask the question of the authors.

Hi all,

I want to announce our IGMP/MLD proxy implementation named mcproxy. It is
implemented in C++ and conforms to RFC 4605. Mcproxy runs on Linux with
Kernel version > 2.6.36.

Its core features are:

    - support of IGMPv2/MLDv1; IGMPv3/MLDv2 support coming soon
    - multiple proxy instances per host: needed for PMIPv6 (RFC6224)
    - dynamic configuration: add/del downstream interfaces at runtime
    - high performance and throughput: operates on Linux Kernel tables

The latest beta version and further documentation of the mcproxy prototype
are available at http://mcproxy.realmv6.org/

Any questions and feedback are very welcome.

Regards,
  Sebastian

Hi,

I'm afraid that I could not attend this IETF.

Anyway, we revised the draft describing PIM-SM and PMIPv6.
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-asaeda-multimob-pmip6-extension-10

According to some comments, we changed the title of this draft to;
"Multicast Routing Optimization by PIM-SM with PMIPv6".
IMO, it would be great if new charter includes routing optimization
and this draft is the candidate of the solution.

I hope now people can understand the approach.

Regards,

Technical Summary

IGMP and MLD are the protocols used by hosts and multicast routers to
exchange their IP multicast group memberships with each other. This
document describes the ways of IGMPv3 and MLDv2 protocol optimization
for mobility, and aims to become a guideline for tuning of IGMPv3/
MLDv2 Queries and timer and counter values.

WG Summary

Nothing worth noting outside ordinary WG process.

Document Quality
