IEEE Communications Magazine

Feature Topic: ADVANCES IN NETWORKING SOFTWARE

CALL FOR PAPERS

Networking and communications systems are currently undergoing a =
substantive transformation on several fronts that promises to result in =
substantially lower cost, simplified operations, and dramatically faster =
innovation cycles as traditional barriers to the deployment of =
innovations are removed. This transformation is best summarized as =
=C3=92softwarization=C3=93 of the network, which is, in turn, realized =
through advances in networking software. Where in the past networking =
functions were predominantly implemented using purpose-built hardware, =
custom protocols, and firmware images, those networking functions are =
increasingly instantiated through software that is abstracted from =
hardware, freely programmable, and relying on algorithmic invocation of =
generic APIs. SDN (Software-Defined Networks), NV (Network =
Virtualization) and NFV (Network Function Virtualization), NP (Network =
Programmability) and SFC (Service Function Chaining) are all examples of =
this transformation.

This Feature Topic solicits original contributions that collectively =
provide a comprehensive picture of recent advances in network =
softwarization and networking software, including associated platforms, =
technologies, applications, and methods. Contributions can include =
tutorial-style overviews of the current state of the art, latest =
research results, and reports on experiences with the adoption and =
deployment of network softwarizationtechnology.

Topics that may be considered for the Feature Topic will include, but =
notbe limited to, the following:

- Software-Defined Networks (SDN) and Software-Defined Infrastructure =
(SDI)

- Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Network Virtualization (NV)

- Service Function Chaining (SFC)

- Open Source Frameworks, such as Open Daylight, ONOS, OpenContrail, =
OPNFV, and others

- Softwarized Networking Service Platforms and Ecosystems

- Management, Orchestration, Service Assurance of Softwarized Networks

- Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and SDKs for Networking =
Software and Software-Defined Infrastructure

- Network Programmability and Network Programming Languages, including =
Intent and Policy Languages for SDN/NFV/SFC

- Softwarized Networking Applications, Services, and Architectures

- Novel Control and Management Planes for Softwarized Networks

- Resource Management, Traffic Engineering, QoS in Softwarized Networks

- Softwarization applied to specific Network Technologies: 5G, Mobile =
Edge Computing, C-RAN

- Software Platforms for Internet-of-Things (IoT); Softwarized Things, =
Devices, Endpoints

- Network Softwarization for Fog and Cloud Networking

- Security in Softwarized Networks

- Engineering Methodologies and Tools for Network Softwarization

- Networking Software Design and Delivery Methodologies, DevOps

- Networking Software Standardization: ETSI NFV, IETF, ITU-T, IEEE, =
others

- Interworking and Migration Strategies for Legacy Networks

- Deployments and Experience Reports

SUBMISSIONS

Articles should be tutorial in nature, with the intended audience being =
all members of the communications technology community. They should be =
written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of =
the article. Mathematical equations should not be used (in justified =
cases up to three simple equations are allowed). Articles should not =
exceed 4500 words (from introduction through conclusions, excluding =
figures, tables andcaptions). Figures and tables should be limited to a =
combined total of six. The number of archival references is recommended =
not to exceed 15. Insome rare cases, more mathematical equations, =
figures, and tables may beallowed if well justified. In general, =
however, mathematics should be avoided; instead, references to papers =
containing the relevant mathematics should be provided. Complete =
guidelines for preparation of the manuscripts are posted =
athttp://www.comsoc.org/commag/paper-submission-guidelines. Please send =
a pdf (preferred) or MSWORD formatted paper via Manuscript Central =
(http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee). Register or log in, and =
go to Author Center. Follow the instructions there. Select "June 2017/ =
Advances in Networking Software" as the Feature Topic category for your =
submission.

Advances in Networking Software" as the Feature Topic category for your =
submission.

**********************************************************************

The 15th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network
Management (IM 2017) will be held 8-12 May 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal.
Held in odd-numbered years since 1989, IM 2017 follows the 29 years
tradition of NOMS and IM as the primary IEEE Communications Society’s
forum for technical exchange on management of information and
communication technology focusing on research, development,
integration, standards, service provisioning, and user communities.
IM 2017 will focus on the theme "Integrated Management in the Cloud
and 5G Era" presenting recent, emerging approaches and technical
solutions for dealing with 5G and cloud infrastructures, as well as
associated services and applications. Submissions addressing
traditional network management challenges are also in the scope of the
conference. IM 2017 will offer five types of sessions: technical,
experience, poster, panel, and dissertation. High quality will be
assured through a well-qualified Technical Program Committee and
rigorous peer review of papers. A special call for demonstrations is
organized to allow industry partners and researchers to demonstrate
early products and prototypes.
