For example, Industrial Internet applications, Augmented Reality, Tactile Internet require ultra-low latency measured in single-digit milliseconds and do not tolerate no jitter at all. Economic pressures mandate increasingly cloudification of real-time applications with precision service level needs. Many of those applications are mission-critical and cannot afford any loss in connectivity or even single packets. Collectively, these applications require networking services that support high-precision and predictable service levels with associated guarantees that border on determinism. This requires a rethinking of many of the principles underlying existing "Best Effort" internetworking technology. Various approaches are emerging to tackle those challenges. Data centers with fixed topologies and a constant number of hops rapidly replace conventional routing and more general Internet topologies. Networks are becoming more programmable to allow to custom-tailor and optimize treatment of packets and flows. Related technologies range from Service Function Chaining to Network Slicing to SDN. While 5G is making URLLC at the network edge a reality, momentum for Beyond 5G and 6G is building to push the boundaries of precision services beyond the edge and across the core. One overarching question concerns how these technologies can be harnessed and what additional approaches are needed to deliver on high-precision and predictable networking. This will involve advances over all planes of network architectures, such as programming and processing of packets in the data plane, control interfaces and ultra-low latency control loops to optimize service levels in the control-plane, high-precision measurements and telemetry with nanosecond accuracy at scale, and related platforms and algorithms in the management plane. The Graph Neural Networking challenge 2021 brings a fundamental limitation of existing GNNs: their lack of generalization capability to larger graphs. In order to achieve production-ready GNN-based solutions, we need models that can be trained in network testbeds of limited size (e.g., at the vendor=E2=80=99s networking lab), and then be directly ready to operate wit= h guarantees in real customer networks, which are often much larger in number of nodes. In this challenge, participants are asked to design GNN-based models that can be trained on small network scenarios (up to 50 nodes), and after that scale successfully to larger networks not seen before, up to 300 nodes. Solutions with better scalability properties will be the winners. [Problem statement] The goal of this challenge is to create a scalable Network Digital Twin based on neural networks, which can accurately estimate QoS performance metrics given a network state snapshot. As we are heading towards nasce= nt 6G networks, this is the appropriate time to do a hindsight exercise to = gather the lessons learned to start shaping the networks to come in a coher= ent and converged manner towards a service-oriented automatically managed network. The adoption of virtualization and softwari= zation for networks and ICT infrastructures in general is more than ever an= opportunity of moving network solutions to customized end-to-end, yet priv= ate and independent, network services designed and delivered on-demand over heterogeneous network segments and i= nfrastructures. The ever-growing connectivity demand and continually more s= tringent performance requirements along with operational and environmental = costs are pushing the boundaries of network solutions to maximize the efficiency of every deployment and op= eration action.

In this direction, automation a= nd its extreme form known as “zero-touch” has drawn the attenti= on of many actors from the IT, Telecom and Cloud sectors. A plethora of ini= tiatives dealing with all related aspects from a global or specialized point of view for 5G and beyond networks can be cite= d here: TMF ZOOM, ETSI ZSM, ETSI ENI, RAN-related management initiatives (O= -RAN, ONF SD-RAN), different EU and non-EU research projects like MON-B5G, = 5G-DIVE, 5Growth, 5GZORRO, INSPIRE5Gplus, and last but not least the Hexa-X project recently launched as a flagship = 6G European initiative.

An important objective of zero-= touch is to go beyond the use of software-based solutions to automate some = well-understood tasks for the sake of time savings. Zero-touch considers to= make full use of analytics and AI-based models to perform decision making at all levels of operations: optimize re= source sharing, reduce consumption using flexible mechanisms for network se= rvice provisioning, and support new deployment models adapted to massively = distributed infrastructures, while ensuring smooth service continuity, SLA-compliance and end-to-end automati= on of the management and orchestration of network services and resources. A= utomation brings a series of challenges to the ways in which network servic= es and more generally network slices are designed, deployed, provided and (intelligently) managed. Multiple iss= ues are still to be addressed for zero-touch to be concretely adopted by th= e Industry. One important direction is the need to converge on the way soci= etal stimuli coming in the form of service requests from a variety of vertical industries (e.g., industry = 4.0, transportation, energy, automotive, eHealth) are handled by the networ= k. And it is not only about dynamically deploying the service, but most imp= ortantly about continuously monitoring it and providing the various control loops towards 24/7 operation whilst f= ulfilling SLA requirements. This is the point at which the network will bec= ome a catalyzer of all sorts of economic activity of our society, at the le= vel of what the Internet represented half a century ago.

 

Therefore, with the same spirit= of CNSM as a whole, this workshop on “Zero-touch Network and Service= Management” (ZNSM) aims at providing an international forum for rese= archers and practitioners from academia and the industry at large, including network operators, service providers, equipme= nt manufacturers and IT companies, to discuss and address the challenges de= riving from such evolution in the delivery and operation of networks and se= rvices.
