A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks of the IETF.

Title : Root initiated routing state in RPL
        Authors : Pascal Thubert
                          James Pylakutty
	Filename : draft-ietf-roll-dao-projection-00.txt
	Pages : 14
	Date : 2016-12-07

Abstract:
This document proposes a protocol extension to RPL that enables to
install a limited amount of centrally-computed routes in a RPL graph,
enabling loose source routing down a non-storing mode DODAG, or
transversal routes inside the DODAG. As opposed to the classical
route injection by DAO messages, this draft projects the routes from
   the root of the DODAG.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks of the IETF.

Title : MPL Forwarder Select (MPLFS)
Authors : Peter van der Stok
                          Abdur Rashid Sangi
	Filename : draft-ietf-roll-mpl-forw-select-00.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2016-12-07

Abstract:
This document describes a Forwarder Selection (MPLFS) protocol for
the Multicast Protocol for Low-Power and lossy Networks (MPL) to
reduce the density of forwarders such that the number of forwarded
   messages is reduced.

The protocol uses Trickle to distribute link-local information about
the identity of the neighbours of the nodes that have MPL-enabled
interfaces. In the end-state all nodes are connected to a minimum
number, N_DUPLICATE, of forwarders, where N_DUPLICATE is application
dependent, and there is a path between any two forwarders.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks of the IETF.

Title : Asymmetric AODV-P2P-RPL in Low-Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs)
        Authors : Satish Anamalamudi
                          Mingui Zhang
                          Abdur Rashid Sangi
                          Charles E. Perkins
                          S.V.R Anand
	Filename : draft-ietf-roll-aodv-rpl-00.txt
	Pages : 15
	Date : 2016-12-07

Abstract:
Route discovery for symmetric and asymmetric Point-to-Point (P2P)
traffic flows is a desirable feature in Low power and Lossy Networks
(LLNs). For that purpose, this document specifies a reactive P2P
route discovery mechanism for hop-by-hop routing (storing mode) based
on Ad Hoc On-demand Distance Vector Routing (AODV) based RPL
protocol. Two separate Instances are used to construct directional
paths in case some of the links between source and target node are
   asymmetric.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Routing Over Low power and Lossy networks of the IETF.

Title : When to use RFC 6553, 6554 and IPv6-in-IPv6
        Authors : Maria Ines Robles
                          Michael C. Richardson
                          Pascal Thubert
	Filename : draft-ietf-roll-useofrplinfo-10.txt
	Pages : 35
	Date : 2016-12-12

Abstract:
This document looks at different data flows through LLN (Low-Power
and Lossy Networks) where RPL (IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power
and Lossy Networks) is used to establish routing. The document
enumerates the cases where RFC 6553, RFC 6554 and IPv6-in-IPv6
encapsulation is required. This analysis provides the basis on which
to design efficient compression of these headers.

One more or less editorial comment on the milestones:
Saying something like "Initial submission of draft-name-xy-..." seems
wrong given these drafts have not been adopted as wg items yet.

Hi Mirja,

The drafts mentioned in the milestones were discussed before and during
the rechartering process.
Although there was definite interest in these drafts in the WG, we could
not make them wg documents, because the charter did not provide room for
those drafts.
We are currently going through the adoption process.

Hope this clarifies this point.

Greetings,

peter

COMMENT:

This charter looks fine to me, modulo a few nits I wondered about.

Perhaps "self routing configuration" might be clearer as "routing
self-configuration"?

I was expecting "It will also need to consider the transport
characteristic the routing protocol messages will experience" to refer to
characteristics, plural. But I wonder if the sentence would be clearer as
"The workng group will consider the transport characteristics routing
protocol
messages will experience".

I'm sure "Additional protocol elements to reduce packet size" is correct,
but it seems counter-intuitive. Is there a better way to say what you
mean?

Is "the draft about when to use RFC6553, RFC6554, and IPv6-in-IPv6
encapsulation Draft-ietf-roll-useofrplinfo" an Applicability Statement,
or did this mean something else? But I see that Mirja had a question
about the use of draft names that haven't been adopted. Perhaps it's
worth a pass substituting clearer descriptions for draft names?

Re: ROLL will coordinate closely with the working groups in other areas
that focus
on constrained networks and/or constrained nodes.

It might be worthwhile adding the following INT working groups to the
list for co-ordination.

6tisch: very closely related because of the extensive use of RPL as well
as the OFs
ipwave: as we discussed during chartering of ipwave, there might be use
cases that require either co-ordination and/or routing expertise in the
future. roll might be an appropriate contact point

What about this one: "Additional protocol mechanisms to reduce packet size"

Yes, it is a guide with the uses cases that describe the uses of "RPL
option" (RPI), "RPL Source Route Header" (RH3), and an IPv6 Extension
Header.

Ok, we will do that.

I have one non-blocking question for the IESG and WG
chairs...

The charter continues to say "The Working Group will pay
particular attention to routing security..."

How do we think that's going? I'm not sure that it's going
that well - we seem to have a history where ROLL documents
arrive at the IESG lacking security analysis. I don't think
that's because folks are bad or lazy, but it's maybe more
down to people assuming that security is someone else's
problem (e.g. will be handled by layer 2, or will be part
of some applicability statement, or will be handled by
some RPL security document etc...)

Anyway, now that we're re-chartering, maybe it's a good
time to review how we've been doing on this, given the
history and see if there's anything we could do to avoid
problems arising for future ROLL documents. (I don't have
any specific suggestion for what to do, I just wanted to
see if a discussion of this might be useful.)

Hi Stephen,

Indeed, formulating security attacks, analysing their consequences, and
findig adequate remedies for a routing protocol is a challenging task.
It starts with formulating the attacks, which in my understanding evolve
over time.

In the 6lo WG a draft has been written to handle privacy issues in a
coherent way; which proves extremely useful during the IP-over-foo draft
discussions.
In Roll Michael has written a template for the applicabiity statements,
including security issues.

In my opinion a draft which helps identifying the threats and their
(existing) remedies could be a proper way forward.
For Roll such a draft together with Manet, which faces similar wireless
issues, might be a good starting point.

Any other suggestions, or showing this one to be inadequate, are
welcome.

Low power and Lossy Networks (LLNs ) are made up of many embedded
devices with limited power, memory, and processing resources. They are
interconnected by a variety of links, such as IEEE 802.15.4, Bluetooth,
Low Power WiFi, wired or other low power PLC (Powerline Communication)
links. LLNs are transitioning to an end-to-end IP-based solution to
avoid the problem of non-interoperable networks interconnected by
protocol translation gateways and proxies.

RFC7102 discusses ROLL specific aspects of LLNs, and RFC7228 provides
additional terminology for constrained devices. RFC 5548, 5673, 5826,
and 5876 describe the requirements for LLNs from several application
perspectives.

The Working Group has focused on routing solutions for the areas:
connected home, building, and urban sensor networks. It has developed a
Framework that takes into consideration various aspects including high
reliability in the presence of time varying loss characteristics and
connectivity while permitting low-power operation with very modest
memory and CPU pressure in networks potentially comprising a very large
number (several thousands) of nodes.

The Working Group continues to focus on routing issues for LLN and to
maintain, improve and streamline the protocols already developed,
including RPL and MPL. The focus is on IPv6 work only. The Working Group
will pay particular attention to routing security and manageability
(e.g., self-configuration) issues. The working group will consider the
transport characteristics that routing protocol messages will
experience.

ROLL will coordinate closely with the working groups in other areas that
focus on constrained networks and/or constrained nodes, such as 6lo,
6tisch, ipwave, lwig and CoRE. Other working groups such as pim, bier
and manet will be consulted as needed. The Working group will align with
the 6man WG when needed.

Work Items are:

- Guidance in using RFC6553, RFC6554, and IPv6-in-IPv6 encapsulation.

- Additional protocol elements to reduce packet size and the amount of
  required routing states

- Automatic selection of MPL forwarders to reduce message replication.

- Data models for RPL and MPL management.

- Multicast enhancements algorithms.

Milestones:
Jan 2017 - Initial Submission of a proposal with uses cases for RPI,
RH3 and IPv6-in-IPv6 encapsulation to the IESG
Mar 2017 - Initial submission of a YANG model for MPL to the IESG
Mar 2017 - Initial submission of a root initiated routing state in RPL
to the IESG
Jul 2017 - Initial submission of a proposal for Source-Route Multicast
for RPL to the IESG
Jul 2017 - Initial submission of a Forwarder Selection Protocol for MPL
to the IESG
Nov 2017 - Initial submission of a reactive P2P route discovery
mechanism based on AODV-RPL protocol to the IESG
Nov 2017 - Initial submission of a proposal to augment DIS flags and
options to the IESG
Jul 2018 - Initial submission of a solution to the problems due to the
use of No-Path DAO Messages to the IESG
Sep 2018 - Recharter WG or close

Hi, I had intended to finish this as part of the adoption call, having
previously read the document, but was late. These comments are probably
more useful now anyway. I can open tickets as appropriate if chairs direct.

Let me leave editorial comments to the end of this email.

1) Didn't we have an errata about default lifetime units when there was no
   configuration option?

No, we didn't. I wonder if this plagues us everywhere, that 6550 should
have specified a default Lifetime units in the absense of a Configuration
option.

2) RFC6551 reference:

> or the RPL routing extensions specified in Routing for Path
> Calculation in LLNs [RFC6551]. Based on that information, the root

huh? the title of 6551 is: Routing Metrics Used for Path Calculation in
                           Low-Power and Lossy Networks

so, what exactly did you mean here?

3) does dao-lifetime eclipse need for no path dao?

4) resource calculations

"but how the root figures the amount of
resources that are available is out of scope."

I disagree. I would like some mechanism to be in scope.
And you suggest NMS and 6551 later on... which seems to make it in scope.
I'm not sure how 6551 can be used here.

5) section 4 needs subsections! Too many concepts in one heading.

6) On the use of a new MOP.

Are we sure that we need a new MOP? Could we use Non-Storing MOP, with
some indication of which nodes speak DAO-Projection? Could that work?

Or do you really want to force a forklift upgrade here?
Why does the entire network need to be aware of this new mode?

7) page 8 is too dense!

8) I just didn't understand the english here.
I think that "last node" needs a better term. Maybe colour
the nodes or otherwise mark them and use those terms?

The last node in the segment may have another information to reach
the target(s), such as a connected route or an already installed
projected route. If it does not have such a route then the node

9) running out of resources:

it seems that it ought to be said that the new node might not be one that the
last node had previously talked to. There is the issue of both routing
storage (from storing mode), but also neighbor cache resources.

10) more hard to understand statements...

> For the targets that could be located, last node in the segment
> generates a DAO to its loose predecessor in the segment as indicated
> in the list of Via Information options.

woe! What?

11) create new section on route cleanup

> A NULL lifetime in the Via Information option along the segment is
> used to clean up the state.

needs new 4.x section on cleanup.

12) move / replicate diagrams into this section, and use numbered diagrams

> In the example below, say that there is a lot of traffic to nodes 55

new section, move diagram here.

make figure 5 and 6 more like figure 3, numbered, etc.

13) Q: retransmission timers, etc. appropriate for these projected DAO messages?
How do we handle packet loss?

14) Security Considerations will need to be written.

The security threats documents details very specific threats, and indicating
if this protocol changes things is important. Also, some consideration
SHOULD be given to when A=1. Are the affects of the new flow of control messages?

So for instance Security Considerations should probably consider how
projected DAO messages could be abused by
  a) rogue nodes
  b) via replay of messages
  c) if use of projected DAO messages could in fact deal with any threats?

======== START of EDITORIAL comments

Change:
Additionally, RPL storing mode is optimized or Point-to-Multipoint
(P2MP), root to leaves and Multipoint-to-Point (MP2P) leaves to root
operations, whereby routes are always installed along the RPL DODAG.

To:
Additionally, RPL storing mode is optimized for Point-to-Multipoint
(P2MP), (..root to leaves and Multipoint-to-Point (MP2P) leaves to root
operations), whereby routes are always installed along the RPL DODAG.

the part () is worded too poorly for me to parse. Can you fix this?

Transversal Peer to Peer (P2P) routes in a RPL network will generally
suffer from some stretch since routing between 2 peers always happens

What means "stretch" here?

section 2: NSM -- I think this is a new term?
(it's not in RFC6550 or 7102. I'm all for this term)

section 3: I found the comments about factoring to be too soon.
Some explanation of mechanism should preceed this part of the
discussion. Just let section 3 be about the formats/contents.

I suggest text like this:
In NSM the TIO option is used in the DAO message to indicate the immediate
parent of a given path. The TIO applies to the Target options that
immedially preceed it, and multiple TIOs may be present to indicate
  multiple routes.

  This specification...
