SSH is a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network ser-
vices over an insecure network. This document describes the SSH connec-
tion protocol. It provides interactive login sessions, remote execution
of commands, forwarded TCP/IP connections, and forwarded X11 connec-
tions. All of these channels are multiplexed into a single encrypted
tunnel. The SSH Connection Protocol has been designed to run on top of
the SSH transport layer and user authentication protocols.

SSH is a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network ser-
vices over an insecure network. This document describes the architecture
of the SSH protocol, and the notation and terminology used in SSH proto-
col documents. It also discusses the SSH algorithm naming system that
allows local extensions. The SSH protocol consists of three major com-
ponents: Transport layer protocol provides server authentication, confi-
dentiality, and integrity with perfect forward secrecy. User authentica-
tion protocol authenticates the client to the server. Connection proto-
col multiplexes the encrypted tunnel into several logical channels.
Details of these protocols are described in separate documents.

SSH is a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network ser-
vices over an insecure network. This document describes the SSH trans-
port layer protocol which typically runs on top of TCP/IP. The protocol
can be used as a basis for a number of secure network services. It pro-
vides strong encryption, server authentication, and integrity protec-
tion. It may also provide compression. Key exchange method, public key
algorithm, symmetric encryption algorithm, message authentication algo-
rithm, and hash algorithm are all negotiated. This document also
describes the Diffie-Hellman key exchange method and the minimal set of
algorithms that are needed to implement the SSH transport layer proto-
col.

SSH is a protocol for secure remote login and other secure network ser-
vices over an insecure network. This document describes the SSH authen-

I'm new to this list, and I was unable to find an archive for it, so
please excuse me if my questions have already been covered. BTW. is
there an archive of this list available?
Now, I've read the current drafts and I have a few questions:

1. The session ID is derived from the SSH_MSG_KEXINIT packets and
possibly other material by the key exchange algorithm. Do I understand
it correctly that a key exchange must always be performed, regardless of
whether confidentiality protection and/or integrity checking is desired
or not?

2. Section 5.2 of the Transport Layer document (Output from Key
Exchange) mentions two outputs, "Initial IV client to server" and
"Initial IV server to client", that I didn't see mentioned anywhere
else. What is their purpose?

3. Sections 4 and 6 of the Authentication Protocol document both contain
the following paragraph:
--
Signature is a signature with the private host key of the following
data, in this order:
o session identifier, and
o packet payload without the signature.
--
Is the signature performed over the raw data of the session identifier
and the packet payload or are the two perhaps supposed to be converted
into strings (length prepended) before signing, like in section 6 of the
Transport Layer document (Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange)?

4. The documents seem pretty complete to me. What is the status of the
draft with regards to standardization?

5. Are there any implementations available of the current drafts?

To answer my previous question (From the WWW page):

42nd INTERNET ENGINEERING TASK FORCE
AT-A-GLANCE

DATES: August 24-28, 1998

HOST: Motorola

HOTEL/MEETING SITE:
  Sheraton Chicago
  301 East North Water Street
  Chicago, IL, USA 60611
  Phone: 800-233-4100
         312-329-7000

That would be on the north east side of the central business district
of the City of Chicago, also known as The Loop for the loop of elevated
rapid transit train tracks (which is known as the El) which enclose
the district. The hotel is just outside that area.

If you are coming from either of the two main Chicago airports, then
the rapid transit system is practical to use to reach the hotel with
about a quarter mile (400m) walks at each end of the trip. And, for
about $15, one can take a shuttle bus directly from the airport to
the downtown hotels. Call 836-7000 from most area codes in the Chicago
area for regional transportation authority assistance with directions.
(It works in the 312, 847 and 630 area codes, at least.) In the case
of coming from O'Hare, obtain a transfer when you pay your fare and
take either train to the Washington and Dearborn stop. Come upstairs
(we have both elavated and subway trains in the Loop). Take the number
56 bus to Columbus and East North Water street. This should put you in
front of the hotel. If you like, then the walk from the subway stop
is not unreasonable (about 2/3 of a mile or about 1Km).
