A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Service Function Chaining WG of the IETF.

Title : Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) and Congestion Feedback Using the Network Service Header (NSH)
        Authors : Donald E. Eastlake
                          Bob Briscoe
                          Andrew G. Malis
	Filename : draft-ietf-sfc-nsh-ecn-support-02.txt
	Pages : 21
	Date : 2020-01-02

Abstract:
Explicit congestion notification (ECN) allows a forwarding element to
notify downstream devices of the onset of congestion without having
to drop packets. Coupled with a means to feed back information about
congestion to upstream nodes, this can improve network efficiency
through better congestion control, frequently without packet drops.
This document specifies ECN and congestion feedback support within a
Service Function Chaining (SFC) domain through use of the Network
Service Header (NSH, RFC 8300) and IP Flow Information Export (IPFIX,
   draft-ietf-tsvwg-tunnel-congestion-feedback).

Hi Dirk,

Thank you very much for your kind reply, and I'm sorry for my too late response.

I understood your thoughts on the two items. It is just my personal opinion, but it may be help for readers to understand the
motivation on use of service performance identifier if you describe some sample scenario where the identifier is useful.

Regarding e2e communication, I don't need detailed description about mechanisms to cooperate with underlay infrastructure. As you
described, it should be out of scope in this document.
While, I expect that the identifier can be used for not only loadbalancing of SFs but also optimization of whole of service path,
and I personally wanted to add some light explanation about it.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Shunsuke

Hi Shunsuke,
thanks for your comments. Fair points raised!
We therefore addressed the ways to control SFC entities according to service specific policies/rules by saying in the draft:

==
Thus, the performance policy identifier allows for the distributed
enforcement of a per-service policy such as a service function path
to only include specific SFs instances. Details of this process are
implementation-specific. For illustration purposes, an SFF may
retrieve the details of usable SFs based upon the corresponding
performance policy identifier. Typical criteria for instantiating
specific SFs include location, performance, or proximity
considerations. For the particular case of UHR services, the stand-
by operation of back-up capacity or the deployment of multiple SF
   instances may be requested.
==

.... and think that - especially a dynamic SFP choice - cannot be achieved by CF alone.

Regarding e2e communication we think that actually any SFC decision relies on underlying transport or user plane layers and routing
decisions to be enforced there. So a description of interworking mechanisms seems to ber out of scope for our document. If you think
it would help of course we could state this explicitly.

We are fine to add references to 3GPP specs and extending to 5G NFs as UPF etc. where applicable!

Thanks again!

Best regards - on behalf of the co-authors Dirk

Hi Shunsuke,
obviously there is some kind of seasonal holiday break globally - so no pro=
blem at all and happy new year!
;-)
We currently are in process of updating the draft and will publish soon whe=
re we hopefully will have considered your ideas properly.
Awaiting your feedback then!
Thanks! =20
Kind regards
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Thank you very much for your kind reply, and I'm sorry for my too late resp=
onse.

I understood your thoughts on the two items. It is just my personal opinion=
, but it may be help for readers to understand the motivation on use of ser=
vice performance identifier if you describe some sample scenario where the =
identifier is useful.

Regarding e2e communication, I don't need detailed description about mechan=
isms to cooperate with underlay infrastructure. As you described, it should=
be out of scope in this document.=20
While, I expect that the identifier can be used for not only loadbalancing =
of SFs but also optimization of whole of service path, and I personally wan=
ted to add some light explanation about it.

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Shunsuke =20

header

Hi Shunsuke,
thanks for your comments. Fair points raised!=20
We therefore addressed the ways to control SFC entities according to servic=
e specific policies/rules by saying in the draft:=20

=3D=3D
Thus, the performance policy identifier allows for the distributed
enforcement of a per-service policy such as a service function path
to only include specific SFs instances. Details of this process are
implementation-specific. For illustration purposes, an SFF may
retrieve the details of usable SFs based upon the corresponding
performance policy identifier. Typical criteria for instantiating
specific SFs include location, performance, or proximity
considerations. For the particular case of UHR services, the stand-
by operation of back-up capacity or the deployment of multiple SF
   instances may be requested.
=3D=3D

.... and think that - especially a dynamic SFP choice - cannot be achieved =
by CF alone.=20

Regarding e2e communication we think that actually any SFC decision relies =
on underlying transport or user plane layers and routing decisions to be en=
forced there. So a description of interworking mechanisms seems to ber out =
of scope for our document. If you think it would help of course we could st=
ate this explicitly.
=20
We are fine to add references to 3GPP specs and extending to 5G NFs as UPF =
etc. where applicable!

Thanks again!

Best regards - on behalf of the co-authors Dirk

Hi Shunsuke,
obviously there is some kind of seasonal holiday break globally - so no problem at all and happy new year!
;-)
We currently are in process of updating the draft and will publish soon where we hopefully will have considered your ideas properly.
Awaiting your feedback then!
Thanks!
Kind regards
Dirk

==
Thus, the performance policy identifier allows for the distributed
enforcement of a per-service policy such as a service function path
to only include specific SFs instances. Details of this process are
implementation-specific. For illustration purposes, an SFF may
retrieve the details of usable SFs based upon the corresponding
performance policy identifier. Typical criteria for instantiating
specific SFs include location, performance, or proximity
considerations. For the particular case of UHR services, the stand-
by operation of back-up capacity or the deployment of multiple SF
   instances may be requested.
==

..... and think that - especially a dynamic SFP choice - cannot be achieved by CF alone.

Hello,

I also support progression of this draft especially as a useful feature for=
 3GPP cellular networks.

One small editorial suggestion would be to directly reference 4G and 5G cel=
lular network applicability in the Abstract to highlight this important use=
 for this feature.

Best Regards,

Akbar

I do support the publication of this document as an important extension. Ap=

Subject:[sfc] WG LC for https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-sfc-ser=
viceid-header/

Dear WG:

The 4 week WG LC for https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/draft-ietf-sfc-servic=
eid-header/ has ended and although several comments were received, and a ne=
w version of the draft was published based upon those comments, the chairs =
do not feel that sufficient support has been expressed by the WG to move th=
is document forward to publication. We recognize that the WG LC happened du=
ring the holidays and end of year madness, so are extending the WG LC for a=
further 2 weeks. Please indicate your support (or lack thereof with reason=
ing) on the mailing list during this WG LC extension so that we can move th=
is document forward.

Thanks!

Jim & Joel
