Is this the place to talk about MRCP?

In "media streams RTP ports" section (3.3), this draft seems to propose a
usage of RTP session/stream/SSRC not quite consistent to what is advocated
by the RTP spec (not multiplexing different streams by using SSRCs in a
single session). Is the same sequence number (or time stamp base) used in a
session across all streams? How do you account for packet loss for each
stream, then? How do you specify things in RTCP (which should be per SSRC)?
In addition, where are the payload types? Could someone provide some
clarification?

Also, this draft does not cover "playback" and "record" - is it because they
are already covered in RTSP? If so, it should be explained. But, what about
if I don't use RTSP and SIP instead?

And, what has happened to the SIP/MRCP draft (which seems to be the right
thing to do)?

Finally, this draft mentioned using RTP for fax - shouldn't it be UDPTL?

Kai

[everything associated with speechsc seems to go out late]

Since there has been no progress on the protocol analysis document, I have made the following decisions:

1. We need a new protocol.

2. Since no one seems to care, the protocol will be based on BEEP and CORBA.

3. To ensure that people use the protocol, we will publish an ADA binding.

Unless I hear otherwise, this is the direction we will go.

P.S. If I don't hear otherwise, we can consider the work of the work group complete.

Eric,

Sounds good to me...... although I believe there is still a significant base
of COBOL applications that may be critical to address.......

Or, I contra-propose:
1. the protocol will be RTSP extended to include the current MRCP messages
'natively', with addition of specific messages for SR/SI, and to define the
'call session' mapping to the MRCP requests.

2. there will be a web services binding....

(sorry to be serious here)

Even simpler why not just fold the required SETUP/TEARDOWN and DESCRIBE
mechanism into MRCP and make it a first class protocol. Then move on to
figuring out how to do RECORD with recognition and speaker verification.

Eric,

Sounds good to me...... although I believe there is still a significant b=
ase
of COBOL applications that may be critical to address.......

Or, I contra-propose:
1. the protocol will be RTSP extended to include the current MRCP message=
s
'natively', with addition of specific messages for SR/SI, and to define =
the
'call session' mapping to the MRCP requests.

2. there will be a web services binding....

(sorry to be serious here)

Yes I know I blew the don't reinvent the wheel requirement, but if the wheel
is the wrong size then it needs a new wheel.

Fitting it into RTSP would mean fitting TTS in to Play, and then adding lots
of messages for recognition, adding messages for verification, etc. Is it
really RTSP anymore? What value does RTSP bring to the combination. Reading
the analysis it doesn't seem like very much and then there would be
confusion of what RTSP methods are supported by a recognizer/ TTS RTSP
server.

I think the same problem exists for SIP.

If we break this one requirement then we can deal with the major issues:
1) verification
2) recognition with recording
3) load-balancing
4) resource registration

The requirement is "Motherhood and Apple Pie". That is, if you don't have to, don't. However, it doesn't mean "never". If a new, first-class protocol is the right answer, then it is the answer.

That said, we will *really* need a document to support that conclusion.

Eric,

I have difficulty with this statement. I cannot reconcile the following
conclusion:
"Motherhood and Apple Pie" =3D=3D "if you don't have to, don't"

I really cannot see the possibility to justify this in the protocol
comparison document given its parochial and US-centered nature.....
(remember I live in France here..)

Justifying a new 1st class protocol due to the non-match of existing ones
and the mess induced by retro-fitting the functionality into them is on t=
he
other hand fairly easy, eg by expanding on BrianE's "wrong size wheel"
statement......

But it's true I do need reworked sections as discussed in the last conf c=
all
to make the analysis doc hang together and look like a serious piece of
work.....

Brian

Brian,

Can you resend the final draft of the protocl evaluation analysis to the initial team? What is left to be completed? Let's get it out of the way.. I am willing do complete my part since I don't know BEEP, COBOL and CORBA :-)

Thanks,

-Rajiv

Brian
