RDMA/IP "Mini-BOF" overview
STORM Working Group, IETF-88 Vancouver Canada
    Thursday, November 7, 1300-1500 (tentative)

The STORM (STORage Maintenance) working group's responsibilities include ma=
intenance and development of various IETF RDMA specifications, and interest=
and activity is rising in these. Many RDMA device and RDMA-aware upper lay=
er implementations already use IETF-standard protocols, and others are movi=
ng toward using IP networks, by defining new IP-family layering. Use of the=
iWARP family is already in place for three broadly implemented storage pro=
tocols (iSCSI, NFS, SMB), as well as for High Performance Computing. The In=
finiband Trade Association, which defines the RDMA over Converged Ethernet =
(RoCE) transport, is considering a RoCE IP-family encapsulation. Additional=
extensions to the IETF RDMA RFCs are in progress in the STORM working grou=
p.

A BOF is scheduled for the upcoming meeting to review the status of the var=
ious RDMA-related efforts, and the requirements of upper layers. With these=
at front of mind, a discussion will be held to determine interest and desi=
re to proceed with next steps in the IETF, and coordination with external s=
tandards efforts. In addition to determining possible future IETF work, the=
discussion will explore the role IETF may play in external specifications.

Example RDMA-capable Transports:
	iWARP (RFC5040-5044) and draft-ietf-storm-rdmap-ext
	RoCE (www.infinibandta.org)
	InfiniBand (www.infinibandta.org)

Example Upper layers using RDMA:
	NFS/RDMA (RFC5666-5667)
	iSER (RFC5046) and draft-ietf-storm-iser
	SMB3 and SMB Direct (MS-SMB2 and MS-SMBD http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/l=
ibrary/jj712081.aspx)
	MPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_Passing_Interface)

Additional implementations/use:
	iWARP extensions (continued)
	Routable RoCE
	Shared memory (draft-fox-tcpm-shared-memory-rdma)
Further use by storage upper layers
Applicability to new storage technologies e.g. flash, nonvolatile memory, =
etc.

Other topic proposal suggestions are welcomed, please mail storm-chairs@too=
ls.ietf.org, or reply to the STORM mailing list.

David Black and Tom Talpey
STORM working group co-chairs

Final reminder - the Working Group Last Call on this document expires at EO=
D tomorrow.

I have three small comments, that can be addressed by the RFC Editor if no =
other changes are required in the meantime.

1) There are several references in the HTML version which do not appear as =
links. The [RSOCKETS], [OFA VERBS], [RFC5040] and [RFC5041] seem to have th=
is issue, in several places. For consistency it would be good to correct th=
ese.

2) Protocol value tables on pages 8 and 9, and all of section 7 on pages 23=
-26, begin in column 1, which is typically not done in RFCs. Indentation sh=
ould be used here.

3) RFC5226 appears as a normative reference, apparently because of two line=
s in the IANA Considerations section referencing it. Is this intended? Norm=
ally, I would expect these to be removed before publication, therefore so w=
ould the normative reference itself.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the STORage Maintenance Working Group of the =
IETF.

	Title : RDMA Protocol Extensions
	Author(s) : Hemal Shah
                          Felix Marti
                          Wael Noureddine
                          Asgeir Eiriksson
                          Robert Sharp

	Pages : 36
	Date : 2013-10-18

Abstract:
This document specifies extensions to the IETF Remote Direct Memory
Access Protocol (RDMAP [RFC5040]). RDMAP provides read and write
services directly to applications and enables data to be transferred
directly into Upper Layer Protocol (ULP) Buffers without
intermediate data copies. The extensions specified in this document
provide the following capabilities and/or improvements: Atomic
   Operations and Immediate Data.

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts director=
ies.
This draft is a work item of the STORage Maintenance Working Group of the =
IETF.

Title : Securing Block Storage Protocols over IP: RFC 3723 Requi=
rements Update for IPsec v3
	Author(s) : David Black
                          Paul Koning
	Filename : draft-ietf-storm-ipsec-ips-update-04.txt
	Pages : 18
	Date : 2013-10-19

Abstract:
RFC 3723 specifies IPsec requirements for block storage protocols
   over IP (e.g., iSCSI) based on IPsec v2 (RFC 2401 and related RFCs);
those requirements have subsequently been applied to remote direct
data placement protocols, e.g., RDMAP. This document updates RFC
3723's IPsec requirements to IPsec v3 (RFC 4301 and related RFCs) and
makes some changes to required algorithms based on developments in
cryptography since RFC 3723 was published.

[RFC Editor: The "Updates:" list above has been truncated by xml2rfc.
   The complete list is - Updates: 3720, 3723, 3821, 3822, 4018, 4172,

With all the expected drafts submitted that are expected before the Vancouv=
er meeting
week, here's the status update:

1) iSCSI consolidated draft. Done and in the RFC Editor's Queue!

2) iSCSI SAM (new features) draft. The -09 version has been approved by th=
e
IESG, so the text is fine, but there's a procedural wrinkle to work through=
.
Section 4.2 of this draft (about SCSI version descriptors for iSCSI) depend=
s
on some changes that need to be made at T10 (SCSI standards body), and thos=
e
T10 change requires that the IANA actions for this draft be performed. The
expected path forward is to have IANA perform their actions, make the chang=
es
at T10 (which may make it into SPC-4), and then send the draft to the RFC
Editor; as a result the actual approval announcement will be delayed.

3) iSCSI MIB draft. Done and in the RFC Editor's Queue!

4) iSER draft. Done, and in the RFC Editor's Queue! =20

5) RFC 3723 IPsec requirements update draft. The -04 version that was just
posted should suffice to clear the one IESG Discuss position on this draft =
-
the delay in getting this version done is my [lack of :-( ] doing in order
to cope with things at my day job. There are two technical changes that
have been made in this new version, for which time will be allowed for WG
review - details below.

6) RDMA Extensions draft. The -08 version that was just posted should tak=
e
care of all of the comments from WG Last Call, and hence should be ready to
submit to our AD and the IESG with the initial request for publication as a=
n
RFC.

-- Two IPsec items --

Two technical changes were made to the IPsec update draft, and these will a=
lso
need to be made to the consolidated iSCSI draft, as they affect the IPsec
security considerations text there:

(A) OCSP is now allowed for checking certificates in addition to use of CRL=
s.

(B) Extended sequence numbers (ESNs) are now required for ESPv2 (IPsec v2 -
	RFC 2406) in addition to ESPv3 (IPsec v3 - RFC 4303).

The first change to allow OCSP, is a straightforward update to the current
state of PKI certificate technology and usage.

The second change was the original intention for iSCSI use of IPsec (which =
is
where all of this started) and got dropped when yours truly overlooked the
existence of RFC 4304, which defines IKEv1 support for negotiating ESN usag=
e.

One of the security ADs pointed out the existence of RFC 4304 and suggested
this change, which makes a lot of sense, IMHO. I believe ESN support to be
widely available in IPsec v2 implementations.

If anyone cares about either of these, please comment - absence of comment
will be taken as absence of objection.

Please feel free to send questions to the list or directly to me.

Finally, there should be an update later this week on the planned RDMA/IP
"Mini-BOF" that will be held at the storm WG meeting in Vancouver - Thursda=
y,
November 7, 1300-1500 (1p-3p). See you in Vancouver!

Thanks,
--David (storm WG co-chair)

Additional background:

The STORM (STORage Maintenance) working group's responsibilities include
maintenance and development of various IETF RDMA specifications, and intere=
st
and activity is rising in these. Many RDMA device and RDMA-aware upper laye=
r
implementations already use IETF-standard protocols, and others are moving
toward using IP networks, by defining new IP-family layering. Use of the iW=
ARP
family is already in place for three broadly implemented storage protocols
(iSCSI, NFS, SMB), as well as for High Performance Computing. The Infiniban=
d
Trade Association, which defines the InfiniBand and RDMA over Converged Eth=
ernet
(RoCE) transports, is also addressing these. Additional extensions to the I=
ETF
RDMA RFCs are in progress in the STORM working group.

A BOF is scheduled for the upcoming meeting to review the status of the var=
ious
RDMA-related efforts, and the requirements of upper layers. With these at f=
ront
of mind, a discussion will be held to determine interest and desire to proc=
eed
with next steps in the IETF, and coordination with external standards effor=
ts.
In addition to determining possible future IETF work, the discussion will
explore the role IETF may play in external specifications.

Example RDMA-capable Transports:
	iWARP (RFC5040-5044) and draft-ietf-storm-rdmap-ext
	RoCE (www.infinibandta.org)
	InfiniBand (www.infinibandta.org)

Example Upper layers using RDMA:
	NFS/RDMA (RFC5666-5667)
	iSER (RFC5046) and draft-ietf-storm-iser
	SMB3 and SMB Direct (MS-SMB2 and MS-SMBD http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/l=
ibrary/jj712081.aspx)
	MPI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_Passing_Interface)

Additional implementations/use:
	iWARP extensions (continued)
	Routable RoCE
	Shared memory (draft-fox-tcpm-shared-memory-rdma)
Further use by storage upper layers
Applicability to new storage technologies e.g. flash, nonvolatile memory, =
etc.
