        URL: http://www.rfc-editor.org/rfc/rfc7143.txt

This document describes a transport protocol for SCSI that works
on top of TCP. The iSCSI protocol aims to be fully compliant with
the standardized SCSI Architecture Model (SAM-2). RFC 3720
defined the original iSCSI protocol. RFC 3721 discusses iSCSI
naming examples and discovery techniques. Subsequently, RFC 3980
added an additional naming format to the iSCSI protocol. RFC 4850
followed up by adding a new public extension key to iSCSI. RFC
5048 offered a number of clarifications as well as a few
improvements and corrections to the original iSCSI protocol.

This document obsoletes RFCs 3720, 3980, 4850, and 5048 by
consolidating them into a single document and making additional
updates to the consolidated specification. This document also
updates RFC 3721. The text in this document thus supersedes the
text in all the noted RFCs wherever there is a difference in
semantics.

This document is a product of the STORage Maintenance Working Group of the IETF.

This is now a Proposed Standard.

STANDARDS TRACK: This document specifies an Internet standards track
protocol for the Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions
for improvements. Please refer to the current edition of the Internet
Official Protocol Standards (STD 1) for the standardization state and
status of this protocol. Distribution of this memo is unlimited.

Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) is a SCSI
transport protocol that maps the SCSI family of protocols onto
TCP/IP. The iSCSI protocol as specified in RFC 7143 (and as
previously specified by the combination of RFC 3720 and RFC
5048) is based on the SAM-2 (SCSI Architecture Model - 2)
version of the SCSI family of protocols. This document
defines enhancements to the iSCSI protocol to support certain
additional features of the SCSI protocol that were defined in
SAM-3, SAM-4, and SAM-5.

Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) Extensions for
Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) provides the RDMA data transfer
capability to iSCSI by layering iSCSI on top of an RDMA-Capable
Protocol. An RDMA-Capable Protocol provides RDMA Read and Write
services, which enable data to be transferred directly into SCSI I/O
Buffers without intermediate data copies. This document describes
the extensions to the iSCSI protocol to support RDMA services as
provided by an RDMA-Capable Protocol.

RFC 3723 specifies IPsec requirements for block storage protocols
over IP (e.g., Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI))
based on IPsec v2 (RFC 2401 and related RFCs); those requirements
have subsequently been applied to remote direct data placement
protocols, e.g., the Remote Direct Memory Access Protocol (RDMAP).
This document updates RFC 3723's IPsec requirements to IPsec v3 (RFC

based on developments in cryptography since RFC 3723 was published.

With the publication of RFCs 7143-7147, the storm WG's iSCSI-related work h=
as
now been completed, including updated specifications for both iSCSI and iSE=
R.
It's been a long journey and a lot of work, including quite a bit of editor=
ial
block/tackling by the authors of these RFCs over the past couple of months.

Many thanks to all who have contributed and in particular to the primary
document/draft authors/editors ... you know who you are ;-).

This is a major accomplishment for the storm WG and the IETF - congratulati=
ons
to everyone involved!!

Thanks,
--David

With the iSCSI work completed, the remaining work for the storm WG involves
two RDMAP extension drafts:

1) The current draft (draft-ietf-storm-rdmap-ext-09) cleared the IESG on Ma=
rch
27 with no Discuss positions - nicely done! An updated version of that dra=
ft
is needed to deal with the AD comments from Pete Resnick and Stephen Farrel=
l,
after which the announcement of approval for RFC publication should follow
shortly.

2) The next draft (draft-wood-storm-rdmap-ext-v2-00) needs an updated versi=
on
to deal with some issues raised in prior list discussion, after which I wou=
ld
expect to issue a call for WG adoption.

After all the work I've done moving the iSCSI drafts to this stage, Tom Tal=
pey
is in the lead as WG co-chair on these two drafts - the authors of both dra=
fts
should work with Tom on these updates.

Thanks,
--David

FYI on a topic of possible interest to STORM WG members.

http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/ietf-announce/current/msg12589.html

-----

A new non-WG mailing list has been created a couple of days ago for discuss=
ions around tcpcrypt.=20

Here is the link to the list:
https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/tcpcrypt

Here is the description of the purpose:
The goal of this mailing list is to discuss encryption of TCP sessions, wit=
hout necessarily requiring endpoint authentication in all cases (but while =
also making endpoint authentication possible). The initial purpose of the m=
ailing list is to discuss the scope and a potential charter of a WG that wo=
uld work on the defintion of TCP extensions to support such encryption, or =
to find an existing WG to perform the work.=20

Abstract:
This document specifies extensions to the IETF Remote Direct Memory
Access Protocol (RDMAP RFC5040). RDMAP provides read and write
services directly to applications and enables data to be transferred
directly into Upper Layer Protocol (ULP) Buffers without
intermediate data copies. The extensions specified in this document
provide the following capabilities and/or improvements: Atomic
   Operations and Immediate Data.

Technical Summary

This document specifies extensions to the IETF Remote Direct Memory
Access Protocol (RDMAP [RFC5040]). RDMAP provides read and write
services directly to applications and enables data to be transferred
directly into Upper Layer Protocol (ULP) Buffers without
intermediate data copies. The extensions specified in this document
provide the following capabilities and/or improvements: Atomic
   Operations and Immediate Data.

Working Group Summary

The extensions add Atomic Operations and Immediate Data to the RDMAP
Protocol. Other RDMA transport protocols define the functionality added by
these extensions leading to differences in RDMA applications and/or
Upper Layer Protocols. Removing these differences in the transport
protocols simplifies these applications and ULPs.

The STORM Working Group chartered this work in mid-2011, and while
no significant dissent was encountered, the document spent an extended
time in the WG owing to other WG priorities. When work resumed in 2013,
the document received substantial attention and review. Four update
cycles resulted in the final text. There was no controversy and consensus
  was easily reached.

Document Quality

The document is of high quality and is well written. The authors represent
companies which deliver industry implementations of the RDDP protocol, and
discussion in the STORM WG by developers of upper layers and applications
indicated strong interest in using the extensions.

Responsible Area Director: Martin Stiemerling (Transport, mls.ietf@gmail.com)
