A new IETF working group has been formed in the Real-time Applications
and Infrastructure Area. For additional information please contact the
Area Directors or the WG Chairs.

Sip Traversal Required for Applications to Work (straw)
------------------------------------------------
Current Status: Proposed Working Group

Chairs:
  Christer Holmberg <christer.holmberg@ericsson.com>
  Victor Pascual <vpascual@acmepacket.com>

Assigned Area Director:
  Gonzalo Camarillo <gonzalo.camarillo@ericsson.com>

Mailing list

Charter of Working Group:

Problem Statement:

Within the context of the SIP protocol and architecture, a
Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA) is any SIP device in the logical path
between two User Agents performing a role beyond that of a Proxy as
defined in RFC 3261. The B2BUA may be as simple as a session-stateful
Proxy becoming a B2BUA in order to terminate dead sessions by
generating BYEs; or it may be a 3PCC-style agent only modifying SDP;
or it may be a Session Border Controller performing such functions as
in RFC 5853; or it may be an Enterprise PBX terminating REFERs and
such; or it may be a complete UAS and UAC implementation with a PRI
(Primary Rate Interface) loopback in-between.

In its most extreme form, the scope of the SIP protocol ends at the
UAS of the B2BUA, and a new SIP protocol scope begins on its UAC side.
In practice, however, users expect some SIP protocol aspects to go
beyond the scope of the B2BUA's UAS side, and be traversed onto its
UAC side, as if the B2BUA was not an end unto itself; this is similar
to the expectation that emails work when they cross from POP and IMAP
to/from SMTP.

It is impossible to normatively define all the behaviors of B2BUAs in
general, or even subsets of them such as SBCs (Session Border
Controlers)or PBXs (Private Branch Exchanges). Unlike consumer NATs,
B2BUAs perform widely varying functions for purposes which may be
unique to their environment, unique to their architecture, or unique
to the wishes of their administrator. Instead of defining all things
a given type of B2BUA must do, a more practical objective would be to
define what very few things any B2BUA must do to make a specific SIP
mechanism work, and let the market decide whether to do those things.

The name of this working group reflects that practical objective: if
there were a thin straw between the SIP UAS and UAC of a B2BUA, what
must be passed through that straw and used on each side. Or viewed
another way, if a B2BUA were in fact a UAS and UAC connected with a
PRI loopback circuit, and if we could extend ISDN, what information
would we carry in ISDN across the PRI for a specific SIP mechanism to
work end-to-end.

For example, the WG could produce a document which specifies that the
Max-Forwards header field value should be copied and decremented
across the B2BUA, if the B2BUA wishes to prevent infinite
loops. Administrators could then tell their B2BUA vendors to comply
with the document, if the administrator so wishes.

Objectives:

The objectives of the STRAW Working Group are to publish normative
documents which define which SIP header fields, parameters, MIME
bodies, body content fields/information, or media-plane
characteristics are required to traverse between the User Agent
"sides" of a B2BUA for specific functions to work.

The specific functions covered are expected to relate to
already-published RFCs or existing RAI area work, as opposed to all
future IETF work. In other words, the Working Group is not meant to
be a never-ending source for B2BUA requirements in the RAI area.

Deliverables would indicate which types of B2BUAs would apply or not.
For example, a document defining the requirements for end-to-end
DTLS-SRTP would not apply to B2BUAs which terminate media, such as
transcoders or recorders.

Milestones:
  Dec 2012 - A taxonomy document defining role-types of B2BUAs, as a
reference for other deliverables submitted to the IESG as Informational
Apr 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs with respect
to loop detection/prevention submitted to the IESG as PS
Aug 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support
end-to-end and hop-by-hop media-loopback test calls submitted to the IESG
as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support
DTLS-SRTP (RFC 5764) end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support
STUN message transactions end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support
RTCP end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS

&gt;&gt; Sip Traversal Required for Applications to Work (straw)<br>
&gt;&gt; ------------------------------------------------<br>
&gt;&gt; Current Status: Proposed Working Group<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Assigned Area Director:<br>
&gt;&gt; =A0Gonzalo Camarillo &lt;<a href=3D"mailto:gonzalo.camarillo@erics=
son.com">gonzalo.camarillo@ericsson.com</a>&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Charter of Working Group:<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Problem Statement:<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Within the context of the SIP protocol and architecture, a<br>
&gt;&gt; Back-to-Back User Agent (B2BUA) is any SIP device in the logical p=
ath<br>
&gt;&gt; between two User Agents performing a role beyond that of a Proxy a=
s<br>
&gt;&gt; defined in RFC 3261. =A0The B2BUA may be as simple as a session-st=
ateful<br>
&gt;&gt; Proxy becoming a B2BUA in order to terminate dead sessions by<br>
&gt;&gt; generating BYEs; or it may be a 3PCC-style agent only modifying SD=
P;<br>
&gt;&gt; or it may be a Session Border Controller performing such functions=
 as<br>
&gt;&gt; in RFC 5853; or it may be an Enterprise PBX terminating REFERs and=
<br>
&gt;&gt; such; or it may be a complete UAS and UAC implementation with a PR=
I<br>
&gt;&gt; (Primary Rate Interface) loopback in-between.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; In its most extreme form, the scope of the SIP protocol ends at th=
e<br>
&gt;&gt; UAS of the B2BUA, and a new SIP protocol scope begins on its UAC s=
ide.<br>
&gt;&gt; In practice, however, users expect some SIP protocol aspects to go=
<br>
&gt;&gt; beyond the scope of the B2BUA&#39;s UAS side, and be traversed ont=
o its<br>
&gt;&gt; UAC side, as if the B2BUA was not an end unto itself; this is simi=
lar<br>
&gt;&gt; to the expectation that emails work when they cross from POP and I=
MAP<br>
&gt;&gt; to/from SMTP.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; It is impossible to normatively define all the behaviors of B2BUAs=
 in<br>
&gt;&gt; general, or even subsets of them such as SBCs (Session Border<br>
&gt;&gt; Controlers)or PBXs (Private Branch Exchanges). Unlike consumer NAT=
s,<br>
&gt;&gt; B2BUAs perform widely varying functions for purposes which may be<=
br>
&gt;&gt; unique to their environment, unique to their architecture, or uniq=
ue<br>
&gt;&gt; to the wishes of their administrator. =A0Instead of defining all t=
hings<br>
&gt;&gt; a given type of B2BUA must do, a more practical objective would be=
 to<br>
&gt;&gt; define what very few things any B2BUA must do to make a specific S=
IP<br>
&gt;&gt; mechanism work, and let the market decide whether to do those thin=
gs.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; The name of this working group reflects that practical objective: =
if<br>
&gt;&gt; there were a thin straw between the SIP UAS and UAC of a B2BUA, wh=
at<br>
&gt;&gt; must be passed through that straw and used on each side. =A0Or vie=
wed<br>
&gt;&gt; another way, if a B2BUA were in fact a UAS and UAC connected with =
a<br>
&gt;&gt; PRI loopback circuit, and if we could extend ISDN, what informatio=
n<br>
&gt;&gt; would we carry in ISDN across the PRI for a specific SIP mechanism=
 to<br>
&gt;&gt; work end-to-end.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; For example, the WG could produce a document which specifies that =
the<br>
&gt;&gt; Max-Forwards header field value should be copied and decremented<b=
r>
&gt;&gt; across the B2BUA, if the B2BUA wishes to prevent infinite<br>
&gt;&gt; loops. Administrators could then tell their B2BUA vendors to compl=
y<br>
&gt;&gt; with the document, if the administrator so wishes.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Objectives:<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; The objectives of the STRAW Working Group are to publish normative=
<br>
&gt;&gt; documents which define which SIP header fields, parameters, MIME<b=
r>
&gt;&gt; bodies, body content fields/information, or media-plane<br>
&gt;&gt; characteristics are required to traverse between the User Agent<br=
>
&gt;&gt; &quot;sides&quot; of a B2BUA for specific functions to work.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; The specific functions covered are expected to relate to<br>
&gt;&gt; already-published RFCs or existing RAI area work, as opposed to al=
l<br>
&gt;&gt; future IETF work. =A0In other words, the Working Group is not mean=
t to<br>
&gt;&gt; be a never-ending source for B2BUA requirements in the RAI area.<b=
r>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Deliverables would indicate which types of B2BUAs would apply or n=
ot.<br>
&gt;&gt; For example, a document defining the requirements for end-to-end<b=
r>
&gt;&gt; DTLS-SRTP would not apply to B2BUAs which terminate media, such as=
<br>
&gt;&gt; transcoders or recorders.<br>
&gt;&gt;<br>
&gt;&gt; Milestones:<br>
&gt;&gt; =A0Dec 2012 - A taxonomy document defining role-types of B2BUAs, a=
s a<br>
&gt;&gt; reference for other deliverables submitted to the IESG as Informat=
ional<br>
&gt;&gt; =A0Apr 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs with=

Welcome to the STRAW WG!

The WG charter and associated milestones can be found here: http://tools.ie=
tf.org/wg/straw/charters

As you may have seen, we have been assigned agenda time in Vancouver in ord=
er to kick-start the work. So we encourage people to take a look and see fo=
r which deliverables they are interested to contribute and, even better, st=
art putting some draft text together.

Dec 2012 - A taxonomy document defining role-types of B2BUAs, as a referenc=
e for other deliverables submitted to the IESG as Informational
Apr 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs with respect to =
loop detection/prevention submitted to the IESG as PS
Aug 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support end-t=
o-end and hop-by-hop media-loopback test calls submitted to the IESG as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support DTLS-=
SRTP (RFC 5764) end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support STUN =
message transactions end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS
Dec 2013 - A document defining the requirements for B2BUAs to support RTCP =
end-to-end submitted to the IESG as PS

If you want to present ideas on how to address certain problems, feel free =
to contact the chairs so that we take it into account when drafting the age=
nda for the upcoming session.

The following existing drafts are related to this group:
- A Taxonomy of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Back-to-Back User Agents:=
 http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-kaplan-dispatch-b2bua-taxonomy-00
- Loop Detection Mechanisms for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Back-to-B=
ack User Agents (B2BUAs): http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-kaplan-dispatch-=
b2bua-loop-detection-00
- A Media-based Traceroute Function for the Session Initiation Protocol (SI=
P): http://tools.ietf.org/id/draft-kaplan-dispatch-sip-traceroute-00.txt

Best regards and happy strawing!

Victor

bluntly, how can there be any agenda items when not one of the agenda
items has been discussed on the STRAW list (not one message regarding
any of the drafts on the agenda)? In fact, no one has posted a
message to this list but you in the last week, and none of those
messages had anything to do with any of the agenda drafts (or any
draft whatsoever)...

that's just fishy

James

James,

Thanks for your feedback. The goal for the upcoming meeting is to kick-star=
t the work towards the WG deliverables -- unfortunately the WG creation dat=
e did not allow contributors to meet the -00 deadline.
After sending a couple of calls for agenda requests we believe discussing e=
xisting drafts related to this group (please see the milestones list) would=
be a good way to start our work. Do you agree?

Of course, if you want to present ideas on how to address certain problems =
please contact the chairs and we'd be more than happy to allocate some agen=
da time for you.

Thanks again for your feedback.
-Victor

Victor

I'm not trying to be a pain, or stifle this effort - I'm just
surprised that *nothing* has been talked about on this list,
especially leading up to a meeting that apparently has several drafts
that will be considered for WG consideration soon. In other words,
the silence is deafening on this list.

I compare this to RAI's next newest WG INSIPID, and there are was
only 1 milestone to begin with, and there was LOTS of discussion,
especially before the meeting. Maybe I'm a bit slanted by that recent
experience.

I mean, the authors of the agenda drafts haven't even announced their
drafts on the list with a non-draft-lingo paragraph explaining what
each are about.

I would at least expect that coming soon. Is that unreasonable?

James

Hi James,

Thanks for your feedback!

As Victor said, the whole idea of presenting the drafts is to kick-start th=
e work, and start the discussions.

In Vancouver, we are obviously not going to suggest that the WG adopts the =
drafts. Anyone will get a chance to submit drafts on how to implement the d=
eliverables, which we will then discuss in a normal fashion :)

Regards,

Christer

FYI,
I've re-submitted the traceroute draft using the new WG name so it'll appea=

Hi all,

a virtual room has been reserved on the Meetecho system for today's
STRAW WG meeting session.

Access to the on-line session (including audio and video streams) will
be available at:
http://www.meetecho.com/ietf84/straw

The Meetecho session automatically logs you into the standard IETF
jabber room. So, from there, you can have an integrated experience
involving all media and allowing you to interact with the room.
Remote participants might also send their own voice to the room, if they
want to, by either calling a landline phone number, or using our
embedded VoIP applet (in this last case they are *strongly* advised to
use a headset).

A tutorial of interactivity features of the tool can be found at:
http://www.meetecho.com/ietf84

Cheers,
the Meetecho team

Sip Traversal Required for Applications to Work (STRAW)
TUESDAY, July 31, 2012
1700-1830 Afternoon Session III
Regency E

- - Agenda bashing and IETF Note Well (5 min)
Presenter: Chairs

Christer: Introduction, Session should be seen as tutorial and starting poi=
nt of work.

- - Introduction to the WG (10 min)
Presenter: Hadriel Kaplan
Related reading: STRAW WG charter http://tools.ietf.org/wg/straw/charters

Slides-84-straw-1
Hadriel:
Problem statement =E0 B2BUA are not only SBC. So could be also other entiti=
es e.G. PBX ect.

It's impossible to specify everything that all types of B2BUAs must do for =
SIP but very few things any B2BUA must do to make a specific mechanism wor=
k. Like loop detection (Max-Forwards)

Daryl: It helps but does not guarantee that it will work. The STRAW defined=
 procedures will help for implementers.
Hadriel: Every RFC we will provide will work or.
Robert: This is a theoretical discussion.

- - Role-types of B2BUAs (20 min)
Presenter: Hadriel Kaplan
Related reading: A Taxonomy of Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Back-to-Ba=
ck User Agents http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-kaplan-dispatch-b2bua-taxon=
omy-00

Slides-84-straw-2

Slide: Proxy B2BUA

Keith: Does it have to sent BYE =E0 Yes
Paul: Could keep contact?
Hadriel: Yes
Keith: Still proxy behaviour but will be a B2BUA due to replacement of elem=
ents.
Hadriel: Will replace headers or send also Messages.
Andrew: Will it be a functionality not a BOX?
Hadriel: Yes

Slide: Signaling B2BUA

Andrew Hutton: Sees also the modification of SDP as signalling
Hadriel: sees this as an other type of B2BUA

So this is not seen as manipulating SDP for media changes only to fix SDP.
Will be further discussed on the list.

Slide: Media Aware B2BUA

Keith: Should reference RTP RFC terminology the differentiate between media=
 aware and media terminating B2BUA.

Will be taken into account. (List discussion)

Paul: What is the Criteria for B2BUA? One-to-one, call initiation into two =
direction or???
Hadriel: Some documents will define the taxonomity itself.
Paul: For Conference servers perhaps is not interesting for STRAW but e.g. =
for a PCC it is seen.
Keith: Will have documents in STRAW that is covered by the taxonomy documen=
t. Conference is out of scope for him.
Partaha: Thinks that it is needed more taxonomy functions.
Hadriel: Please put it on the list for discussion.
Martin: Conf is more an APP Server and there are Edge Servers and Applicati=
on Server. Are these types covered?
Hadriel: Yes

Daryl: Proposes to mention within the draft the differences between types a=
nd add examples.
E.g. -This is a Media aware B2BUA and does...
-If you deal with media than this is the procedure to do it.
-If it is a Signaling then... And add some examples.

- - Loop detection/prevention (20 min)
Presenter: Hadriel Kaplan
Related reading: Loop Detection Mechanisms for Session Initiation Protocol =
(SIP) Back-to-Back User Agents (B2BUAs) http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ka=
plan-dispatch-b2bua-loop-detection-00

Slides-84-straw-3

Robert: Pointing the RFC5393 =E0 will end up one Call, If you have forking =
than you will have many Messages before ending by max forwards.
Hadriel: proposes to pass thought the Max-Breadth.
Robert:
Andrew: Please not remove Max-Forwards.
Robert: Max Forwards didn't work for proxies.
Others: It works
Robert: Yes better than nothing.
Keith: There are still Scenarios where this will not work. Conclusion =E0 n=
ot everything will work.

Conclusion: We will get rid of loops within STRAW.

- - Media-loopback test calls (20 min)
Presenter: Hadriel Kaplan
Related reading: A Media-based Traceroute Function for the Session Initiati=
on Protocol (SIP): http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-kaplan-dispatch-sip-tra=
ceroute-00

Slides-84-straw-4

Draft proposes a new header which is decremented by passing each media awar=
e B2BUA. This is needed for trouble solution.

Brian: Could be useful. But why should this to be implemented?
Hadriel: This is seen more for test calls to trace it.
Martin: This will work within a carrier network, but we will not let others=
in our network. Such test calls will be only traced border to border.

Paul: Likes the concept but not the new header. Why Max Forwards is not eno=
ugh. So when M-F=3D0 the B2BUA can answer the call.
Hadriel: When a loop exists then the B2BUA will answer this but does not he=
lp while circulating.

Hadriel: There will be a media loopback RFC soon.
Daryl House: What the difference between this Media loopback and the propos=
ed mechanism.
Hadriel: For test calls to a B2BUA and wanted to have it explicitly answere=
d. E.G. for cases where the Call sucks.

Brian: Problem is that you cannot replicate the path. But do stepwise testi=
ng.
Hadriel: No will really will go through the path.
Andrew: No guarantee that this can be replicated, but could help.
Martin: If you have unpredictable results than it will not help.
Brian: will not work 100% but will work in 95% of cases.
Dale: You need not a 100% reproducibility 95% is enough. So if you make 20 =
Calls you will get at least a result.

Daryl House: Asks if this is really a use case for this WG.
Hadriel: Was asked at least by 2 SP from US

Martin: Really disagrees with the mechanism to. It makes these things worse=
. Not better, because more measurements and effort are needed with no or mi=
nimal result.

Conclusions:

Christer: Not yet asking for adoption but asking for comments on the list a=
nd discuss the discussed proposals. E.G definition of other B2BUA roles. Ph=
one call planned not a interims.

Daryl: Asks for discussion of the existing B2BUA roles.
Paul: Proposal to add later also further roles to the draft when definition=
of existing roles are finalized and agreed.
Conclusion: This means that the draft will be frozen for some of the B2BUA =
roles but could be extended by new defined roles.
