Hi All,

During the IETF84 session Hadriel presented the different types of B2BUA (S=
ee http://www.ietf.org/proceedings/84/slides/slides-84-straw-2.ppt)=20

I pointed out that a signalling-only B2BUA that does not handle media may s=
till modify SDP and Hadriel indicated that we might need another category o=
f B2BUA to cover that case.=20

I checked the draft (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-kaplan-dispatch-b2bua=
-taxonomy-00#section-4.2) and it does not specifically say that a signallin=
g-only B2BUA does not modify SDP but if that is what is meant then we may n=
eed to clarify that B2BUA's that don't terminate media may still modify SDP=
.

Regards
Andy

I think we might want to differentiate - the point of having separate defin=
itions/types was if a future RFC (from STRAW or otherwise) defined somethin=
g that needed to either be handled/processed or copied by some B2BUA types =
but not others, then it's worth disambiguating. =20

For example, if there's a draft like the BUNDLE proposal in MMUSIC, then in=
stead of saying something like "A B2BUA which modifies SDP but does not han=
dle media blah blah, etc., etc., MUST do XYZ", we can say "A [RFC-STRAW-TAX=
ONOMY] SDP-aware B2BUA MUST do XYZ."

Howdy,

The following are a few comments and questions concerning draft-kaplan-stra=
w-b2bua-loop-detection-00.

Thanks,
Brett

----

Should this draft be limited to requests outside of a dialog? More specifi=
cally, I'm concerned with the potential of vendors lowering the initial Max=
-Forwards based upon the number of Route entries within dialog.

Concerning the following section 5 quote, the requirement to only decrement=
by 1 causes the B2BUA to be uselessly vulnerable to receiving large Max-Fo=
rwards values (potential impacts are discussed within RFC 5393). Section 7=
's flexibility to act differently might be good enough to address my concer=
n; however it might be good to reiterate that RFC 3261 indicates that the m=
aximum is 255 to help protect handling if higher values are received. My p=
reference is to always allow a B2BUA to decrement by more than 1 similar to=
what a UA can do when selecting the initial value.

"All B2BUA types MUST copy the received Max-Forwards header field
from the received SIP request on their UAS side, to any request(s)
they generate on their UAC side, and decrement the value, as if they
 were a Proxy following [RFC3261]."

Also concerning the above quote, some services should cause the resulting r=
equests to not proxy/decrement the Max-Forwards. For instance a received I=
NVITE might cause sending NOTIFY and multiple INVITEs. The NOTIFY likely w=
ould not use the received/decremented Max-Forwards; similarly generating a =
new Max-Forwards for some of the INVITEs may be appropriate if specific ser=
vices cause an INVITE to be sent after receiving an INVITE.

Concerning the following section 5 quote, RFC 3261 does not require the req=
uest to be rejected. For instance, it specifically allows the OPTIONS to b=
e acknowledged with a 200 response.

"Being a UAS, B2BUAs MUST also check the received Max-Forwards header
field and reject the request if the value is zero, as defined in
 [RFC3261]."

Concerning the following section 5 quote, it should be updated to indicate =
"which SHOULD be 70". This would better reflect RFC 3261 section 16.6 with=
out introducing ambiguity with prior MUST.

"If the received request did not contain a Max-Forwards header field,
one MUST be created in any requests generated in the UAC side with a
default value of 70, as described for Proxies in section 16.6 part 3
 of [RFC3261]."

Howdy,

The following are some comments and questions concerning draft-kaplan-straw=
-sip-traceroute-00.

Thanks,
Brett

----

Section 4.2: Section 5 reference does not look correct.

Section 4.2/4.3: If a B2BUA receives B2bua-Hops 0, should the B2BUA send IN=
VITE to its media server to answer? If so, I assume that it is okay to not=
 decrement B2bu-Hops to -1.

Section 5: Concerning Max-Forwards open issue, the prior comment potentiall=
y indicates why Max-Forwards would not be adequate.

B2BUAs in a singling path always have the ability to muck with SDP,
that's part of the problem with them. And don't get me started with
the problems SBCs can cause... ;-)

Howdy,

The following are some comments concerning draft-kaplan-straw-b2bua-taxonom=
y-00.

Thanks,
Brett

----

Section 3: I agree that it would be useful to add the additional B2BUA role=
type (such as "SDP-aware B2BUA") which modify SDP but is otherwise not a m=
edia-plain B2BUA.

Section 3.1.1: If the Proxy-B2BUA sends UPDATE, it corrupts the cseq space.=
Thus, it will subsequently need to continue to modify the cseq values to =
avoid potential cseq related issues. Since such a B2BUA impacts cseq space=
, RFC 4028 functionality, and other things, they potentially should fall in=
to the Signaling-only role type.

[As co-chair]

Hi,

Our first scheduled delivery in the charter is a taxonomy document defining=
 role-types of B2BUAs.

We believe that having a common understanding and agreement of the differen=
t B2BUA roles is essential for our other deliverables. We therefor suggest =
that our main focus at this point should be to agree on the different roles=
(of course we don't want to prevent people from also discussing topics rel=
ated to other deliverables :).

Currently, the only proposal on the table is Hadriels's B2BUA taxonomy docu=
ment: http://www.ietf.org/id/draft-kaplan-straw-b2bua-taxonomy-00.txt

Next week we intend to ask the working group for adoption of the draft.

Note that adopting the draft does not mean we have agreed on the currently =
defined roles. It means that we will use the document as a base for our del=
iverable.

However, if someone else is planning to submit a draft on the same topic, w=
e ask that person to inform the working group when it is expected to be ava=
ilable.

We also intend to organize a phone meeting, where we will discuss the B2BUA=
roles. A doodle poll for the dates will be posted shortly.

Regards,

Christer
