In a discussion of draft-ietf-l1vpn-basic-mode-04.txt for secdir, I
reported that that the nit checker showed 7 nits. Adrian Farrell said:

>Hmmm. I wonder which nit checker you used.
>http://tools.ietf.org/tools/idnits/ only reports one warning to me as a
>referenced I-D has subsequently been published as an RFC.

to which I replied:

   I looked at the page:
   http://www3.tools.ietf.org/wg/l1vpn/draft-ietf-l1vpn-basic-mode/
   which reports:

    2008-02-21 16:40 draft-ietf-l1vpn-basic-mode-04.txt
   [txt/plain] [txt/pdf] [nits] [diff -from-03, wdiff, txt]
     (7 errors (**), 0 warnings (==), 0 comments (--).)

Clicking on the nits link gets you to:
...

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 3471

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 3473

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 3477

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 4204

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 4206

** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 4208

        Summary: 7 errors (**), 0 warnings (==), 0 comments (--).

And Adrian noted:

Interesting.
http://tools.ietf.org/tools/idnits/ is at revision 2.08.08

The page you used is at revision 2.08.04

> ** Downref: Normative reference to an Unknown state RFC: RFC 3471

Bug in the tool :-(
The RFC clearly states...
Category: Standards Track

And I volunteered to alert the Tools Team.

Hopefully, this is the right address to use for such alerts.

Hmm. Right. When I set up the script which creates that page, the
things that idnits checked were more limited, and in particular
the check result weren't dependent on referenced IDs later being
published. I need to change the page to provide a link to a real-time
run of idnits.

...

Hm. When was this run? There was a glitch where the RFC state information
was unavailable for about a day some time ago -- this might be from that time.
Otherwise I need more information to debug it. FWIW idnits does not show
that warning now:

If you go to the html version of the draft, at
  http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-l1vpn-basic-mode-04
there is a link at the top right which leads to an on-the-fly run of idnits,
which a moment ago returned:

...
== Outdated reference: draft-ietf-ccamp-lsp-stitching has been published as
     RFC 5150

     Summary: 0 errors (**), 1 warning (==), 0 comments (--).

It is :-)

Thanks. I'll change the static information on pages like the one you
originally used so that it will lead to an on-the-fly check, which should
be as good as is possible given the changing state of published documents.

I just ran rfcdiff (the web service version) on
draft-miyata-v6ops-trans-approach-00.txt and
draft-miyata-v6ops-trans-approach-01.txt

It apparently sees the second draft as an empty document. The reason
is that the draft starts thus:

Internet Engineering Task Force H. Miyata
Internet-Draft Yokogawa Electric Corp.
Intended status: Informational May 14, 2007
Expires: October 24, 2008

It should be May 14, 2008 - when I patch that error, rfcdiff
works perfectly.

(Incidentally, idnits doesn't detect the 18 months expiry error, and the
ID submission process didn't either, but that's an issue for another list.)

Yow! Will look at this at once.

Idnits doesn't parse and verify the dates and expiration time, currently.

Adding that to the possible features list.

Heh. The real reason for the empty document seems to be that the draft is
in Mac format -- \r line endings. Your editor probably was just kind enough
to fix that when you did the date edit, so the modified file used either \n
or \r\n, which rfcdiff handles fine.

Fixed in rfcdiff v1.35, which is online now.

The txt to pdf conversion process has somehow failed for
this draft:

http://tools.ietf.org/pdf/draft-ietf-pce-pcep-12.pdf

The txt version looks OK, so I can't immediately tell why
the PDF looks weird...

Best regards,
Pasi

I'm guessing it's because it uses CR for newline. My review scripts
had issues with the draft for that reason, too.

Hah. Same reason as for the rfcmarkup failure Brian pointed
out: The .txt file has Mac (\r) line endings. I've added a
handling of this case to the pdf conversion script too.

Finally an advantage in using Windows! (The corresponding disadvantage is
that it's annoyingly difficult to find out what line endings a file
actually uses, without firing up cygwin.)

Thanks. It's surprising this has never showed up before.

Thanks for looking into this!

(I suspected it might have something to do with line endings, and
even tried doing search-replace for CR/LF/CFLF/whatever, but it
seems Emacs hides this so well from the user that search-replace
for line endings doesn't always work perfectly.)

Best regards,

Emacs often treats line endings locally, i.e., using the convention of
the OS on which it is installed. The only way to ensure the final .txt
file has the right EOL conventions (i.e., those required in RFCs, and
expected in IDs) is to perform post-processing substitution, e.g., via a
script.

These are probably showing up now because of the I-D web interface to
upload the drafts. When things were sent in via email, the
canonicalization was probably performed by the secretariat. Perhaps you
could check the I-D web interface to see if it could canonicalize things
better?

Mph. I believe there were cases like this before, too -- I can certainly
remember running into documents with Mac line endings around 2002, and
there are both Unix-type and DOS-type line endings in documents from the
email-only submission period before the new submission tool. I think that
running into this now is more an indication of an increasing number of
people using native Mac tools to produce documents.

As for doing line-ending normalization -- that may be a good thing to do,
or maybe not -- should an author be able to assume (and verify) that the
document in the archive is identically the same as the one submitted?

There are several checks that aren't being done right now that could be
done, such as looking for \r linebreaks and looking for non-ascii
characters. Possibilities are to: a) silently accept such things, b)
warn about but still accept, c) warn and query whether to accept as is
or to convert, d) convert and tell the user it was converted, and e)
silently converting. Right now it's (a). If the upload tool were to do
(c) or (d), then there would be no confusion when the uploader checked
the result against their input. Should the upload tool do something
other than (a)? I'm sure there are many arguments either way.

The script I developed for the Word template (URL below) might be useful =

in this regard; it catches non-ASCII characters, lines over length, etc. =

It would be fairly simple to update it to replace various linebreaks=20
with the common form.

If that's of interest, let me know and I'll update the code...

Something with the draft submit tool still does not work
as expected for multiple authors. I reported this some
weeks ago, so maybe s/still/again/ if it is the old bug.

Frank,

You'll be pleased to know that the new I-D Submission tool is much
better at parsing out author names and addresses - e.g., I ran the new
parser across the example you gave, and got:

[{'author_order': 1, 'first_name': 'Steve', 'last_name': 'Atkins',
'email_address': 'steve-asp@wordtothewise.com'}, {'author_order': 2,
'first_name': 'Jon', 'last_name': 'Callas', 'email_address':
'jon@pgp.com'}, {'author_order': 3, 'first_name': 'John', 'last_name':
'Levine', 'email_address': 'standards@taugh.com'}, {'author_order': 4,
'first_name': 'Ellen', 'last_name': 'Siegel', 'email_address':
'esiegel@constantcontact.com'}]

which I think is completely correct. There's an open question about
what to do about old, bad data in the IETF database - for example, if
you ask the IETF database who steve-asp@wordtothewise.com is, it says
his name is "Author Domain". Normally, the tool trusts the database
over the extracted info, since the extraction is all done with
heuristics, so a new submission would continue to have this incorrect
name info. (Oddly, I don't know where "A. Local-part" came from at
all; I would have expected "A. Domain".)

This new version should be deployed in June.

  Bill
