Temporary glitch as a result of adding a lot of historic information (part of that is available through the new 'concluded' page: http://tools.ietf.org/wg/concluded ) but there is more info which isn't shown there yet. Anyway, while adding the historic info I'm sorry to say that I overwrote current info in the case of long-running active WGs. The situation should correct itself shortly. If they are available at all - when I checked the screen scraped archive URLs on http://tools.ietf.org/wg/concluded I was shocked how many are unvailable. It looks like we're in serious danger to loose some of our institutional memory. So, I'm thinking about starting some concerted effort to collect and HTMLify the archives of historic IETF mailing lists. For example, I grabbed quite large number of them from http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/infosys/network/docs/ietf.org/concluded-wg-ietf-mail-archive/ , and I'm getting ready to convert them via mhonarc. Questions: - do people think this is a worthwhile effort? - where should I collect the archives and host the HTML from? GMaNe used to be subscribed as whatever@gmane.org, and that worked at least until 2008-07-08: GMaNe identified this mail injected via GMaNe as spam. That's kind of odd, if it's really spam, why forward it to the list ? That my UA has no X-Mailer/User-Agent is IMO a bogey: When posting via GMaNe the UA is a "Newsreader", and it has a X-Newsreader, as "specified" in the NetNews RFC (actually as "deprecated", and this RFC is still waiting for its number, but that's another story. :-) I've reported this "spam" as "unspam" while checking something else: Today the IETF Tools list "challenged" a new article posted via GMaNe. And *apparently* GMane used a new address whatever@m.gmane.org (note the "m"): Seeing the "challenge" I sent the "response" (1115) directly (via GMail, not via GMaNe), but apparently that didn't work, the original article is still lost in space. What is going on here, did GMaNe change its address unilaterally ? Why does the IETF C/R system not do whatever it is trying to do ? Right, but none of these third-party sites is ever complete (GMaNe for example didn't have the first WG I tried, which was TCPM), and because the data isn't under our control, they can go away and we're left with no archive. I think the IETF should hold this data. My confidence in GMaNe is stronger than in the IETF wrt list archives: GMaNe has search, NNTP access, various web interfaces with nice picons, access by Message-ID, permalinks, and the killer application: Access on a raw message including all headers, exactly what I need to check obscure mail and MIME issues. GMaNe can also filter obscure "list footers" or "subject tags". The IETF list archives offer none of these features, all essential from my POV. Of course it's good to have more than one archive as backup. And the IETF certainly needs its own archives for legal reasons among others. I note that all this is about archive features, not about archive longevity/availability. I agree that they are nice features, maybe even essential ones, but availability trumps them all. To understand my point, go to http://tools.ietf.org/wg/concluded and click on various archive URLS. Observe how few give you anything other than a 404, and even those that do usually just show you different kinds of error page. It's hard to tell what Google knows about this, you could try two patterns: However cross-posted articles to more than one list available on GMaNe will only get an URL in the first group. If somebody posted to the general list *and* Newtrk (that happened) it would AFAIK get only one permalink on the general list. To get around this you could try the URL patterns But then you'd get articles more than once if they are available under different patterns. Maybe you could use specific patterns for lists only on GMaNe, and general patterns with a "negative score" to get your preferred archives for other lists first. Google will anyway add its own scoring ideas, CSEs are rather fuzzy whatever you do. Here is the "raw" challenge message: RFC 3834 issues in this "challenge": 1 - The envelope sender address was the ordinary list address, the list bounce address might be better, see RFC 3834 chapter 3.3 2 - There was no OPTIONAL (RFC 3834 chapter 3.1.8) Precedence: list (or similar) header field 3 - There was no RECOMMENDED (3.1.7) Auto-Submitted header field 4 - There were no RECOMMENDED (3.1.6) References and In-Reply-To header fields with the Message-ID of the challenged article, IMO that would be good 5 - There was no OPTIONAL (3.1.5) Auto: subject tag 6 - There was no RECOMMENDED (3.1.2) Reply-To header field, that's bad in conjunction with the next points 7 - The 2822-From was not a list owner address or say tools-discuss-request@ietf.org as RECOMMENDED in 3.1.1, it was the list address, IMO that's wrong. * GMaNe considered the challenge as ordinary mail from the list to all members, and that is how I got it, as ordinary "article" in a "newsgroup" gmane.ietf.tools. At that time I had no idea what is wrong and decided to send a "response" as requested, but "just in case" I used another route: Via Gmail corresponding to the 2822-From in the mail that triggered the challenge, a bad idea on my side. The list identified my address as subscribed, missed that it was "response" to its prior "challenge", and sent the response to all IETF Tools list members not limited to GMaNe: Likely the C/R system is still waiting for a response via GMaNe, I'll test that later. RFC 3834 does not mention the problem of a "response" on another route, but I think C/R systems should find such responses - especially if the "challenge" claims to use only the subject to find "responses", not the envelope sender. The topic as been a sore point for me for many years already. E.g., - all archives should be downloadable as flat files that can be imported into a favorite local MUA - web based archvies are fine too (OK, also a MUST), but need to meet certain criteria: - have permanent (non-changing URLs) - have decent user interfaces (a number of IETF archives don't allow searching and don't even let you go to specific dates to browse, or just let you scroll forwards/backwards one screen at a time starting at the most recent message) Once there is agreement on the basic requirements, we can talk about which tools work best (or not), and which tool the IETF should deploy on its IT infrastructure. This is a rather weird case, GMaNe got three further challenges, where GMaNe apparently changed its addresses for unlear reasons unilaterally from local@gmane to local@m.gmane style on different IETF lists. Because I knew the drill I simply confirmed this using the same route via GMaNe, not via another mail provider, and that worked.
