Greetings again. I looked on the tools site and don't see any source
code. I would love a tool that, given a draft or RFC, extracts the
title from the top of the first page. (Extra points for pulling out
the abstract). If I have to do it as "given the filename, look in
1id-abstracts.txt or rfc-index.xml", that's fine, but I would like
the code for that as well. No wheel-recreating, if not needed.

As a side note, it seems odd that the code y'all have created isn't
on tools.ietf.org...

Maybe it's mostly a matter of a missing index page and documentation,
or something, I guess ...

The datatracker source is available through
  http://tools.ietf.org/tools/ietfdb

and the following covers a number of other known and unknown tools.
Not all will be up-to-date and used in generating the tools pages,

Why not pull the info from the XML rfc-index?

As I said, I'm happy to. If someone has already written the code to
do so, that would help. I haven't done any XML coding in Python
before. It is actually more important for me to be able to pull it
for Internet Drafts.

I don't see anything on Henrik's list that does either of these...

For RFCs specifically you could do that, and I also have the titles avail=
able,
in a variety of other formats, but that doesn't match Paul's specificatio=
n of
being able to extract title from both Drafts and RFCs...

Hmmm. Given the automation of the ID submission process, it might be
useful to ask the ID-administrator to support this rather than screen
scraping (or page scraping, as the case may be).

(resending; mailman didn't like my .zip attachment.)

I have been using abstract.sed for awhile, and just whipped up title.sed
tonight for you. Hope it helps, both are in http://www2.fuggles.com/paul.zip
(along with tighten.sed).

To use it:

  sed -f abstract.sed FILENAME | sed -f tighten.sed
  sed -f title.sed FILENAME

Examples with some RFCs and an I-D:

> sed -f abstract.sed rfc1122.txt
This is one RFC of a pair that defines and discusses the requirements
for Internet host software. This RFC covers the communications
protocol layers: link layer, IP layer, and transport layer; its
companion RFC-1123 covers the application and support protocols.

> sed -f abstract.sed rfc5037.txt | sed -f tighten.sed
The purpose of this memo is to document how some of the requirements
specified in RFC 1264 for advancing protocols developed by working
groups within the IETF Routing Area to Draft Standard have been
satisfied by LDP (Label Distribution Protocol). Specifically, this
report documents operational experience with LDP, requirement 5 of
   section 5.0 in RFC 1264.

> sed -f title.sed rfc5037.txt
Experience with the Label Distribution Protocol (LDP)

> sed -f title.sed draft-wing-avt-dtls-srtp-key-transport-02.txt
                        DTLS-SRTP Key Transport

Does anyone have some code that does a good job of extracting ABNF
information from an RFC/I-D?

If we can find some code that does a decent job, an idea for
tools.ietf.org would be

	tools.ietf.org/abnf/RFC#

It would work just like tools.ietf.org/html/, but show the extracted
ABNF code from the given RFC or I-D.

The tarball for Bill Fenner's ABNF validator at http://rtg.ietf.org/~fenner/ietf/bap/
contains aex, which seems to work pretty well.

I'm seeing the tools wg pages fail in a random fashion. For instance, if
I access

I get the usual framing structure correctly, but the document frame
contains just this:

"An error occurred at this point in the web-page generation. An error
report has been sent to the webmaster. If this error isn't fixed within
48 hours, please contact the web page author directly. "

However, curiously, this does not always happen. *Sometimes* I get the
real thing.

Jari

One of the servers had a problem with accessing the issue database. This
is fixed for that server for now, but it is associated with the impending
upgrade of Trac to the next major release (0.11). I'm going to try to
do that for all servers today and tomorrow, hopefully without more than
a momentarily service impact (a minute or so).

I'd have caught this sooner if I hadn't been on my way back today from a
great Linux BierWanderung event in Samnaun, Switzerland :-)

Best,

	Henrik

bap's new home is http://bap.googlecode.com/ and you can download aex
individually at http://bap.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/aex .

Tony's idea has been implemented using Bill Fenner's 'aex':

just for the suggestion box, I'm sure it overfloweth...

for the IETF Documents tool, consider adding a link when a draft name
changes (e.g. an individual draft is adopted as a working group item),
similar to the link from a draft to its publication as an RFC. It would
be nice to see that
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-vandevelde-v6ops-ra-guard-01 didn't
just expire, but lived on as
http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-v6ops-ra-guard-00 for example.

Oh, the suggesion box is doing fine, it's the pending box which is the
big problem...

Right, good point and good idea. One problem is that there's a lot of
missing information about which document replaces which. I'm going to
try to synthethisise that using Lars Eggert's idea -- should have put
that in place some time ago, but no time...

Anyway. I've added this now, and the replaced-by links should appear if
the replaced-by information is available.

Best,

	Henrik

Would it be useful if the xml2rfc format captured that information somehow?

Mmm. I'm not sure.

The intention has been that when we have Bill's rewrite of the draft
submission tool deployed, we should consider adding fields in the form
to capture information like this.

Capturing it in the xml2rfc format would mostly be appropriate if xml2rfc
also had an option to render it in a standard way in the draft itself.
For drafts which are submitted with an accompanying xml file it would be
possible to pre-populate the replaced-by field in the submission meta-data
verification page based on a replaced-by indication in the xml file, but
it would never be a complete solution which could do away with the form
field. So once the metadata verification page of the submission tool has
a field for 'replaced-by', having it also in the .xml file would make
things a bit easier for xml2rfc users. Before then I think it would not
make a big difference, I think.

(Detour...:)

The question made me start to wonder how large a percentage of drafts are
now being submitted with an accompanying .xml file, and a quick check gave
a figure of about 28% for 2008 to date. The distribution of .xml, .txt
and .pdf drafts over the years were as follows a moment ago, according to
the archive on one of the tools servers:

23:46 /www/tools.ietf.org/id

IMO, the internet-drafts upload tool should be capturing this information.

If you put in a name that ends in -00 and it's a draft-ietf name, it
should practically require the name of the I-D that is being replaced.
It's fairly probable that a WG document will have starte as a personal doc.

It's not just -00's that can replace other docs. I've had several docs
where a couple different drafts by different authors were merged into
one of the document streams.
