Hi,

I periodically (e.g. daily/weekly) use this command to maintain my local I-D
repository..

rsync -avz www1.ietf.org::internet-drafts '/home/hodges/doc/IETF/internet-drafts'

..which AFAIK has always worked fine and I've never discovered a discrepancy
between my repository and e.g. <http://tools.ietf.org/html/> .... until now.

It seems my local I-D repository is entirely devoid of all versions of..

   draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns

Any ideas why that might be? Is it likely a server-side or client-side issue?

thanks,

=JeffH

Not sure why you are using www1, when the instructions say use
www.ietf.org

Seems to be working for me...

I seem to have it:

-rwxrwxrwx. 1 narten narten 168427 2010-03-23 14:20 draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns-11.txt

I assume you have ruled out the weird things like your disk being full
and the like...

I'm stumped by this error:

can't read "stack": no such variable around input line 191

The input file is attached.

I'd be very grateful for any help.

Standard advice: don't run anything through xml2rfc until it's proper
XML. :-)

In this case, xmlint reports:

An XML element is not allowed inside a DTD.
         URL:
file:///C:/projects/xml2rfc/draft-ietf-yam-4409bis-submit-pre-evaluation-00.xml
         Line 00036: <rfc category="info"
docName="draft-ietf-yam-4409bis-submit-pre-evaluation-00"
         Pos 00001: ^

...which is because the doctype declaration wasn't closed:

<!DOCTYPE rfc SYSTEM "rfc2629.dtd" [
<!-- One method to get references from the online citation libraries.
There has to be one entity for each item to be referenced.
An alternate method (rfc include) is described in the references. -->

The mistake was from the template sent to Randy. Tony Hansen
identified the problem.

Can Section 7.1 of xml2rfc be updated as the link to a xml2rfc
validator is incorrect?

When you say "section 7.1 of xml2rfc", please be more specific. Are you
referring to the page at xml.resource.org, to the code for xml2rfc, or
to something totally different?

SM,
Next time I revise the xml2rfc FAQ, I'll update the URL.

OLD:
http://www.fenron.com/~fenner/ietf/xml2rfc-valid/

NEW:
http://www.fenron.net/~fenner/ietf/xml2rfc-valid/

Thank you.
Alice

will fix that, thx.

yeah, disk wasn't full, and I did have the file it turns out. the problem was
in my homegrown tool for finding I-Ds in my local mirror. The expires date
format in draft-cheshire-dnsext-multicastdns is different than the other date
format's I'd seen when I last updated my tool. just had to fix that and its
working.

sorry to trouble you all.

thanks again,

  Henrik:

Take a look at <http://trac.tools.ietf.org/wg/martini/trac/ticket/56>
and see if you can figure out what's going on with the formatting. It
seems to escape from the box and form a new column. It's making the bug
pretty difficult to work with.

Hi,

Enrico and me are trying to debug a mail delivery issue that occurs when =
he sends email to a @tools.ietf.org alias that forwards to me (e.g., =
draft-eggert-tcpm-historicize@tools.ietf.org).

What happens is that the Nokia MX drops the incoming email:

 lars.eggert@nokia.com
   (generated from draft-eggert-tcpm-historicize@tools.ietf.org)
SMTP error from remote mail server after end of data:
   host mx2.nokia.com [147.243.177.56]: 551 5.0.0 DKIM or SPF failed

This is because telecomitalia.it publishes an SPF record with=20

=93Found v=3Dspf1 record for _spf.telecomitalia.it:
v=3Dspf1 ip4:156.54.232.99 ip4:156.54.232.100 ip4:217.169.121.4 =
ip4:217.169.121.5 ip4:156.54.233.200 ip4:156.54.233.201 =
ip4:217.169.121.20 ip4:217.169.121.21 =96all=94

and relay=3Dzinfandel.tools.ietf.org [64.170.98.42] does of course not =
appear in that SPF record for the envelope sender =
enrico.marocco@telecomitalia.it.

I'm not super knowledgable about SPF, so it may well be that the Nokia =
MX is misconfigured, but at least our admins claim that it isn't. Is =
this a configuration issue on zinfandel?

Thanks,
Lars=

Right. I don't know exactly what was the cause, but forcing some of
the text to be treated as literal (enclosing it with '{{{' / '}}}')
seems to be a working fix. Applied.

Me neither; but I remember that somebody who is knowledgeable about this
wrote about this problem in an IETF mail thread not too long ago. I'll
see if I can find it.

>From what I remember, my impression is that this is partially a configuration
error (not on zinfandel, possibly on telecom italia's server) but also
partially a weakness of SPF in that it's not really up to handling the
current situation correctly. But I'll try to find the earlier thread,
and see if that brings more enlightenment.

Alternatively maybe someone else on the list has more clue.

Best,

	Henrik

Two approaches were to handle this type of issue. Rewriting the Mail
From (return path) that reduces NDN integrity, or injecting a message
header field such as resent-* where a PRA algorithm is expected. The
published records do not preclude a possible assumption of the latter.
When the path of any handled message is not fully described, or when PRA
is not always followed, the record should end with "?all" to produce a
neutral result.

I gather that the message is not DKIM signed.

The SPF workaround is to have=20
zinfandel.tools.ietf.org rewrite the reverse-path=20
(MAIL FROM). It's called Sender Rewriting Scheme=20
and it is a way to get around SPF issues.

This is neither a configuration issue on the=20
Nokia MX nor a configuration issue on=20
zinfandel. The quick fix is to ask Enrico not to=20
use the telecomitalia.it email address for=20
messages that may go through forwarders.

The problem is caused by tools.ietf.org functioning as an 'alias' rather
than a mailing list. An alias does "plain message forwarding", as described
in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework#FAIL_and_forwarding

Solution: zinfandel.ietf.org needs to rewrite the Return-Path to something
else. For example, zinfandel could rewrite the MAIL FROM address using the
idea from VERP (http://cr.yp.to/proto/verp.txt), so that
enrico.marocco@telecomitalia.it gets rewritten to
tools-bounce+enrico.marocco=telecomitalia.it@tools.ietf.org. Zinfandel
would undo addresses those addresses in the opposite direction.

It is unfortunate that SPF continues to live on; it has lots of nasty corner
cases like this which interfere with its successful deployment. DKIM is
superior but more complicated.

Although it appears to suffer from the same behavior under these kinds
of circumstances, as we discussed at length on the chairs mailing list
earlier this year.

and it'll have to re-learn.

Best,

	Henrik
