I went and looked, and the fonts that mail archive uses are a lot better
than they used to be, but for the life of me, I can't find "the settings
menu at the top right". Even when I run the window out to full width, I
only see "Help" and "Sign in".

Robert Sparks <rjsparks@nostrum.com> writes:

Ah, thanks!

I find this interface is a lot easier to use.

Still, the date index page is organized strangely -- it seems to want to
segment the messages by months. E.g., looking at Salud, there's a page
for Aug 2018 (one message), then one for all of 2016 (one message), 2015
(one message), then 2014 (several dozen messages). I seem to remember
MhonArc (sp?) would always give you a couple of hundred messages per
page, so the first date page would contain pretty much every e-mail one
remembered.

The thread index seems to be segmented by month, or something. E.g.,
https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/browse/static/salud/thread/2018-08/
How well does it handle threads split across month boundaries?

If I start at
https://mailarchive.ietf.org/arch/msg/salud/0XrO2yb0mshHhtx-8x640hI3Ik4
and click on "Date" at the bottom, I don't land on that message in the
date index.
If I click on "Thread" at the bottom, I wind up in the date index.
(What?)

The URLs for individual messages are still just hashes of some sort.

By design - creating (or recreating after removing messages) the static
pages that make those up is expensive. This also allows hacking the URI.

Yes, it is a hash. The goal is URL stability, even if messages are
moved/removed.
This seems to bother you. Why?

Hi Rich,

There exists one generic API through which all table data can be fetched,
and some additional special-purpose API endpoints. There are notes on
the API here:

  https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/

Best regards,

	Henrik

I use this API for the IETFers iPhone/iPad app. Everything I needed is =
available. I found that I needed to make too many requests to rebuild =
the links between objects which was slow and asked Henrik/Robert for a =
meeting API that collected the info I needed for quicker access. They =
were very helpful and fulfilled this request. So now I use a combination =
of the tastypie API and a custom one for meeting info. I can provide =
assistance with the API if you get stuck.

Thanks,
Tom

Hi there,

I'm trying to get the list of documents that I'm responsible for.

https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/ad/warren.kumari/ contains this, but I'd
like to be able to parse it with tools (to add stuff to my calendar, keep
state, etc).

I've spent some time poking around with https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/,
(the above page seems to be generated by
ietfdb/trunk/ietf/doc/views_search.py : docs_for_ad) but seem to be missing
something fundamental; I'd like it in JSON / XML / something.

The closest I've been able to accomplish is:
curl 'https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/person/email/warren@kumari.net/'
then
curl 'https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=0&ad=111656'

but this feels very clumsy / unfriendly to the database.

Is there something cleaner? Like (not working):
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/ad/warren.kumari/?format=json

I don't think the execution is relevant when it was obviously a bad idea in

This is like putting rabid weasels in your pants, and later expressing
regret at having chosen those particular rabid weasels and that pair of
pants.

          moz-do-not-send="true">https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/</a>,
        (the above page seems to be generated by
        ietfdb/trunk/ietf/doc/views_search.py : docs_for_ad) but seem to
        be missing something fundamental; I'd like it in JSON / XML /
        something.<br>
        <br>
        The closest I've been able to accomplish is:<br>
        curl '<a
href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/person/email/warren@kumari.net/"
          moz-do-not-send="true">https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/person/email/warren@kumari.net/</a>'<br>
        then<br>
        curl '<a
href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=0&amp;ad=111656"
          moz-do-not-send="true">https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=0&amp;ad=111656</a>'<br>
      </div>
    </blockquote>
    Have you tried
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=0&amp;ad=111656&amp;format=json">https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=0&amp;ad=111656&amp;format=json</a>

      <div dir="ltr"><br>
        but this feels very clumsy / unfriendly to the database.<br>
        <br>

      </div>
    </blockquote>
    So the link I sent above is essentially that (and the cost to the
    database is roughly the same).<br>
    <br>
    Let me know what you're really hoping to do, and I'll try to help
    you get closer to it.<br>

It's not so much bothered as feeling like I might be missing something.

"regular" interface:
time curl 'https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/ad/warren.kumari'
real 0m2.835s

API:
time curl '
https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=3D0&ad=3D111656'
real 0m12.323s

For the Agenda I can append 'agenda.json' to '
https://datatracker.ietf.org/iesg/agenda/' and get a JSON version, wasn't
sure if there was something similar for the /doc/ad/ view.
I'm fine to continue doing
https://datatracker.ietf.org/api/v1/doc/document/?limit=3D0&ad=3D111656 -- =
I
really don't care about the speed (I'll run it once or twice a day), I just
didn't want to be doing something stupid if there is a more elegant way....

I don't think the execution is relevant when it was obviously a bad idea in
the first place.
This is like putting rabid weasels in your pants, and later expressing
regret at having chosen those particular rabid weasels and that pair of
pants.

It looks like what I'm doing / the link you provided above is the "right"
way to do it - mainly I was wanting to be sure I wasn't being anti-social
to the database, or just doing something silly.

I'm trying to collect metrics and stats about how I'm doing (useful to
justify my time to management people, and also just for my own knowledge),
make a much simpler dashboard so I can have a widget to remind me what to
do next, etc.

I don't think the execution is relevant when it was obviously a bad idea in
the first place.
This is like putting rabid weasels in your pants, and later expressing
regret at having chosen those particular rabid weasels and that pair of
pants.

Hi Mankamana -

Others doubtless have more knowledge here, but since it's the
weekend/nighttime for most of the planet, I'll take a stab:

You say "nroff editor". By iteself, nroff is not an editor. It's a
converter, that changes its own particular brand of text markup into a
formatted output file. The original nroff has been ported many times,
and is now a part of GNU groff, available pretty much everywhere,
including here: https://www.gnu.org/software/groff/ There are only
binaries for Windows; that is because Macs are really Unix-based, and
so the expectation is that you would build groff from source on your
Mac, just as most Unix users would.

Of course, these days, groff is included stock with pretty much every
other Unix distribution in the world. There is apparently a version
of groff included with MacOS; however, anecdotal commentary seems to
indicate it's rather outdated. Apparently you can easily install a
much more recent version using the "Homebrew" system. See
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/335812/install-pdfroff-on-macos
for details about that. Or you could build a new complete version
from source by installing the free XCode toolkit from the App store.
Homebrew seems much the better choice.

But to just "edit" nroff-style files, you don't need nroff. You can
use any text editor you like. TextEdit, Emacs, VI, any text based
editor of your choice should do the job. You would only need nroff to
convert the files into printable form at the end of your process.

Searching further, I was surprised also to see an actual "NROFF ID
Editor" here:  http://aaa-sec.com/nroffedit/nroffedit/download.html  .
I wasn't aware of it, but it seems to be targeted at IETF IDs.
Perhaps you meant that? There is a Mac download halfway down that
page. Disclaimer: I have no idea what that particular tool is, or if
it's even legitimate, I see only a web page that looks interesting,
and include it for your reference.

As I said, others will chime in with corrections, but I hope this is
enough to get you started.
