What is an "object"? Can there be many objects per event?

If object is specific to events about drafts (as some of the fields
below imply), then we should rename the "object" element to "draft" or
similar.

If we plan to have objects of various kinds (as the type element seems
to imply), then we should delete draft-specific elements from the specs
or comment/specify that they exist only if type==draft.

Only one, I believe

The latter has been my thought.

Mmm. It might be better, even so, to instead of an object with variants
depending on type specify
   element draft {...} | element wg {...} | element announcement {...} | ...

Yes, I think I'll change to that.

# Here's the next iteration on an event schema. I'm using
# full-blown objects inside the events, and I've refined both
# events and object schemas.
#
# Any element which has an attribute 'key' may be looked
# up using the value as a key under the category given by
# the element name in an envisioned meta-information repository.
#
# Any element which has an attribute 'changed' when occurring
# in an event has a new value. After messing about with different
# event types (state-change, new-revision, new-charter, etc.) I
# decided it would be better to eliminate that concept, and
# simply indicate which parts of a draft, wg, etc. meta-information
# has changed.
#
# When an object (e.g., a draft) occurs as part of an event, there
# is no need for it to contain more than the key and the changed
# information, as long as it is possible to look up the complete
# set of information in a reasonably simple manner (both for tools
# and humans).

Hi,

I wanted to show you guys a prototype of the notifications tools during
the upcoming call, though unfortunately a virus hit me during the
weekend making me unable to finish it up to at least a usable state.

Thus, to have something to discuss, I'll describe (no ppt's from me ;)
what it is and how it works and mostly what one will be able to do:

Basically I now have a non-working prototype of a website, which gives
one a personalized overview of a all the area's, wg's and the documents
that each draft contains including possiblity to set notification items.

A user is able to signup using one (or multiple) email addresses, these
mail addresses then map to an entity. Such an entity could be a 'person'
or a 'role' (/group), as such the "Tools Team" would be a role entity
with multiple email id's attached which make up this entity. One email
address can be associated with multiple entities and at login or using a
switch one will be able to pick which entity you want to be. This allows
the entity to be used for ACL's and still keep your personal view as
your own person entity allowing one to follow personal interrests but
also to do another role.

A user then is subscribed to documents/wg's/area's that person is
interrested in. For each doc/wg/area one can specify notifications.
Broad ones like "notify for anything that happens here" and things like
"new document in wg X", "new wg started in area Y", "document last call
for document Z" etc. Regexps could even help out in allowing people to
get notifications about all kinds of documents matching a certain title.

The 'home' page of a user will thus be an overview of all the
subscriptions that a user made. The site also is going to have full
knowledge about all existing wg's/areas/docs so users can select it.
The tools we already have can easily be integrated in that site
structure by linking to them in an automated way.

When then an event comes in over Henrik's event notification mechanism,
the backend of the site matches all the subscriptions that want
information about it and notifies these users using the methods they
specified. Currently I've added possibilities for
irc/jabber/icq/msn/yahoo (abusing bitlbee) and email. One could then
also, per subscription, select for diff's, xml markup and other modes
which we can add later on.
An event also causes the backend to log this information. Thus when you
go on vacation you simply disable events, after coming back, you enable
them again and request a list of what events that you are subscribed to
where supposed to be triggered during that period, or any period
actually.

Toys used to build this up: php backend, code in classes which can be
called from the 'web' and from commandline. Currently a mysql database.
Bitlbee for the IM notification part, thus simply abusing IRC to
interface with them all.

Technically indeed we could even create a jabber/IM based control
channel next to the web one, eg "diff draft-bla-01 draft-bla-02" calling
existing tools to do the actual work.

This most likely sounds all a bit strange or big, just ask me to clarify
in a few. I'll try to get a working version online during the coming few
days, it's mostly a typing+time thing.

Greets,
 Jeroen

Hi,

Here minutes from today's meeting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

0. Present: Alex, Jeroen, Henrik

1. Agenda bashing

2. Comments on the minutes from previous meeting

3. IETF-63:

	* IANA meeting - Bill?

4. Status review

   * Event scraping and generation, event xml schema, dashboard
	- Henrik

"I've started writing the event collection and generation scripts,
and I'm iterating on the exact XML schema to be used to represent
each event. The 3rd major revision appeared last night, and I'm
now doing some refinement, in particular related to event id,
making it easier to discover duplicate events, and exactly what
information is relayed with the event, and which is kept in the
separate draft meta information (XML) database.

I currently have the first rough version of that running, ticking
over and generating events from the rfc editor queue and the
ID-tracker, but it needs some refinement of both code and XML
schema before I'm satisfied with it. I also want to add event
generation from the ietf-announce and i-d-announce mailing lists.

When that's pretty solidly in place, ticking over and generating
new events, I'll feed in historical data based on the archives of
the ietf-announce and i-d-announce mailing lists, and Bill's
archived snapshots of the RFC editor queues. But that's the next
work item, once the daily event generation is solid."

Alex: Do we need a separate element in the event part which tells
you what object this refers to? - Maybe not, we'll see.
For the cases where you want to make a summary of events, do we
want to include a headline in the event - or do we want to derive
that from the information that changed in the object? - Probably
	the latter, for consistency.

   * Event notification prototype
	- Jeroen

"Basically I now have a non-working prototype of a website, which
gives one a personalized overview of a all the areas, wgs and
the documents that each draft contains including possibility to
	set notification items.

A user is able to signup using one (or multiple) email
addresses, these mail addresses then map to an entity. Such an
entity could be a 'person' or a 'role' (/group), as such the
"Tools Team" would be a role entity with multiple email id's
attached which make up this entity. One email address can be
associated with multiple entities and at login or using a switch
one will be able to pick which entity you want to be. This
allows the entity to be used for ACLs and still keep your
personal view as your own person entity allowing one to follow
personal interests but also to do another role.

A user then is subscribed to documents/wgs/areas that person
is interested in. For each doc/wg/area one can specify
notifications. Broad ones like "notify for anything that
happens here" and things like "new document in wg X", "new wg
started in area Y", "document last call for document Z" etc.
Regexps could even help out in allowing people to get
notifications about all kinds of documents matching a certain
	title.

The 'home' page of a user will thus be an overview of all the
subscriptions that a user made. The site also is going to have
full knowledge about all existing wgs/areas/docs so users can
select it. The tools we already have can easily be integrated
in that site structure by linking to them in an automated way.

When then an event comes in over Henrik's event notification
mechanism, the backend of the site matches all the subscriptions
that want information about it and notifies these users using
the methods they specified. Currently I've added possibilities
for irc/jabber/icq/msn/yahoo (abusing bitlbee) and email. One
could then also, per subscription, select for diffs, xml markup
and other modes which we can add later on.

An event also causes the backend to log this information. Thus
when you go on vacation you simply disable events, after coming
back, you enable them again and request a list of what events
that you are subscribed to where supposed to be triggered during
that period, or any period actually.

Toys used to build this up: php backend, code in classes which
can be called from the 'web' and from command line. Currently a
mysql database. Bitlbee for the IM notification part, thus
simply abusing IRC to interface with them all."

Henrik: Looks good. Events will probably come in with only the
changed information attach - full information will have to be
fetched from separate meta-information for the draft, wg, etc.

Alex: Looks good - will have more comments when the prototype
is up and can be looked at.

Sorry for having missed 2 calls in a row. On the 24th, Rex had a vet
visit, and on the 7th, I was driving across Nevada and California on
the 5th day of my cross-country trip with the dogs and Peggy's dad.
(Peggy and Julia flew back.)

Rex's prognosis is not terrific. I can't remember if I told you
folks about his original injury, that he had a toy stuck in his mouth
for hours which tore his jaw muscles. He seemed to be recovering
but his recovery reversed and now he can only open his mouth about
2cm or less. He can still eat now but if it continues to close we don't
know what to do. He has an appointment on Monday to be evaluated
by a surgeon to see if they can invent a procedure to help him.

  Bill

Ok, good to know.

Yes, you did, and I was hoping things would work out...

Ouch, ouch, ouch :-((

I guess I'm extra sensitive to this now, with my own recent and
ongoing pet troubles.

It sounds to me as if the muscles are healing, but developing scar
tissue, which is much less flexible. Not knowing whether it would
help or not, I think I'd still try to do a lot of massaging of the
closing muscles, to try to increase blood flow to limber them up...

Hoping very much that this will end well,

	Henrik

Hi all,

> * IETF Website re-vamp
> - Andrew?

Sorry for submerging over the past few weeks. We've undertaken a
minor re-organisation here, whereby I moved out from daily operations
duties (into the fire of DNS, so it's not like the new assignment is
relaxing :-) ). Anyway, the work leading up to that, along with the
handover, has meant mostly that I've been looking at these things in
approximately 10-minute increments. Needless to say, that's not the
most efficient way to work.

In any case, I have had a chance to look at the site some more, and
to attempt a whack at my first proposal. And while I think that
proposal is still possible, I think we need to think twice about it;
or at least, understand what we're getting. In the mean time, I've
attached a pathetic little sample I put together this morning.

As I understand the plan, what we're doing is proposing some new
strucutre, but then the Secretariat's paid staff will come in and
handle both the actual implementation, and the ongoing maintenance.
(If I'm wrong about that, stop me now and correct me -- the rest of
this is a waste of time).

If I'm right, we have a number of design goals here. They're in no
particular order below:

	* improve the site usability (navigation, &c.)
	* improve the site's recommendations conformance
	* improve, or at least leave the same, the site's
		maintainability
	* allow obsolete browsers to use the site (in some degraded
		mode)
	* allow text-only browsers to work
	* keep to a minimum the technical requirements for the site.
	* make mirroring easy and low-bandwidth

Here's the problem I see: the actual site files appear to have been
organised according to whatever principle was active at the time; or
at least, the principle isn't obvious. That means that
implementation of any revamp is going to involve looking at, and
probably manually editing or moving, every file. I worry about the
liklihood of implementation under that stricture. (This sort of
depends on the technical sophistication of the staff, and I don't
have a feel for that.)

In spite of our previous rejection of this answer, therefore, I
wonder whether we shouldn't investigate some sort of server-side
publication or templating system, which will allow more cut-and-paste
type migration. It requires a much greater up front investment in
software and set up; but it couls still generate static sites that
will be relatively easy to mirror (hrm -- I'm assuming this; maybe
none of the publication systems really will do that).

In any case, in the meantime, attached is a little tarball that
includes a basic outline of the approach I'd originally planned.
This one turns out to be even simpler than my original outline, but I
suspect it's (at least visually) enough, and still simple enough to
cause no trouble when using lynx, &c. It validates, but it doesn't
do anything very interesting (and most of the links are currently
broken). If this seems totally the wrong place for a bridgehead, I
guess it's best to move now.

Again, apologies for the slow movement.

A

list based issue tracking tool, or standalone.

6. Next meeting:

Teleconference Wednesday 5 Oct, 16:00 GMT (same local time
  as today).

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connection details:

To join the call, dial +1-734-615-7474 and enter PIN 0151989.

One can also join the call by dialling:
 sip:session_0151989@edial.internet2.edu
on a SIP-enabled voice communications client.

If the SIP client cannot dial URLs, you can have the conference
system call you if you have the sip URL for your phone. Go to
 https://edial.internet2.edu/call/0151989
and type in the URL to your phone, and follow the directions.

Is there something up with the number? I'm dialed in now, 12:07 EDT,
and I seem only to be getting hold music. But when I first dial the
PIN, I get a "access denied" error. Just something at my end?

Hi,

Here are the minutes from today's meeting.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

0. Present: Alex, Bill, Henrik

1. Agenda bashing

	Nope

2. Comments on the minutes from previous meeting

3. IETF-63:

   * IANA meeting - Bill?

Talked about hooking up the IANA ticket system with the datatracker,
with a lot of ideas of what to do for the 2nd and 3rd iteration, for
full iteration, but decide to basically do just email-based messages
from the tracker to IANA, generated specially for them.

For further stuff, could have the tracker parse the email coming back
from IANA and take in the IANA tracker number.

Not too enthusiastic about this - these are 2 custom systems, and any
code will be custom for one with respect to the other. So email first,
but then maybe go for something more generic - an inter-tool XML
schema, maybe. But won't do that work yet.

4. Status review

   * Event scraping and generation, event xml schema, dashboard
	- Henrik

Has been very busy with day job over the last 2 weeks,
but has now completed one particular deliverable, and
will have more time for the coming 6 weeks or so.

Has a new iteration of the XML schema, and has parsing of
parts of the ietf-announce mailing list mails in place.
Will continue with full parsing and generation of XML
	meta-information from that.

   * Event notification prototype
	- Jeroen

	No information since last call.

   * Draft info draft
	- Alex

No good news, too overwhumped with day-job work to make
	progress on the draft.

   * Scheduling tool
	- Donald?

	No response to pings.

   * IETF Website re-vamp
	- Andrew

Andrew posted a first page mockup to the list today, which
looks like it's going in the right direction. Please check
	it and comment.

(We also got a mail from Andrew a bit into the call indicating
problems getting on the call, but didn't catch him with a call
	back.)

5. Any other business

There's an expressed desire for a better interface to
the mailing list archives. This could be part of a mailing-
list based issue tracking tool, or standalone.

Bill has been pretty happy with Lurker. Is running for all of
the rtg mailing lists (http://rtg.ietf.org/lurker/) Please have
a look, and see if we should set this up for the mailing lists in
    general.

There is also the matter of filling in holes in the official
archives - we need to work out a way of back-filling the archives
    to make them more complete.

6. Next meeting:

Teleconference Wednesday 5 Oct, 16:00 GMT (same local time
  as today).

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connection details:

To join the call, dial +1-734-615-7474 and enter PIN 0151989.

One can also join the call by dialling:
 sip:session_0151989@edial.internet2.edu
on a SIP-enabled voice communications client.

If the SIP client cannot dial URLs, you can have the conference
system call you if you have the sip URL for your phone. Go to
 https://edial.internet2.edu/call/0151989
and type in the URL to your phone, and follow the directions.

Sorry about whatever the phone problem is here; I'm actually at home
w/ a cold (I'm fine, just trying not to infect the subway riders and
rest of the office), and I guess the IP phone works up to its usual
standards. Anyway, there were some other remarks in that mail that I
sent -- I think that we (well, I) really need a clearer idea of what
the maintainers of the site are expecting in terms of the work they
need to do. I'm very nervous that the maintenance burden of the site
is going to be too great for the people who have to maintain it.

No problem; hope you get well soon.

Yes, I noted that - I read through your mail, but didn't have time to
ponder and reply before the call. I expect to be able to do so tomorrow.

I don't think it's possible to get reliable input from the people
doing the website support till after the (hopefully soon occurring)
acquisition by Neustar. After that I'm quite hopeful; I talked with
Neustar's CTO during the IETF in Paris, and he seemed very clueful and
focused on cooperation with the tools team.

Hi,

I'm getting indications from Ray that the deal with Neustar
is getting closer, and a list of desired System Change Requests
would be very good for the time after the transition has been
made.

I expect such a list to cover both new tool development, like the
automated draft submission interface, and transfer of prototyped
tools, to things like suggesting best practices in different areas,
upcoming development of e.g. the tracker, and maybe other things.

I'll start putting together a list of things which comes to my
mind, and would appreciate if you would do the same, and post to
the list.

Once we feel we have a pretty comprehensive list, we'll need to
prioritize it and possibly also categorize it if there are very
different classes of things on the list.

	Henrik

Hi Henrik:

While looking at the "Available Secretariat Tools" page
(http://tools.ietf.org/inventory/secretariat-tools) on the Tools Team Web
site, I noticed that several tools are missing and that some of the
descriptions need updating. It occurred to me that the most efficient way
to ensure that this page stays current is to have the Secretariat maintain
it. We are planning to create a similar page for the IETF Web Site in any
case. When we do, it would be easier for you to include a pointer to our
page than to maintain the page yourself.

Does this make sense??

Cheers!!

Barbara
