Hi Kaspar,

Thank you for working on this proposed namespace ID and for the careful
documentation in Internet-Draft form.

RFC 2141 and RFC 3406 have been replaced by RFC 8141, and the
registration template has changed (based on many years of experience
with registration of new namespaces). As a result, the Internet-Draft
you have posted is not quite conformant to the new template and process.
Please refer to RFC 8141 for details:

https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc8141

Please let us know when you have posted version -03 of the specification
so that we can review it again.

Best Regards,

Peter

A New Internet-Draft is available from the on-line Internet-Drafts directories.
This draft is a work item of the Uniform Resource Names, Revised of the IETF.

Title : Uniform Resource Name (URN) Namespace Registration Transition
        Authors : John C Klensin
                          Juha Hakala
	Filename : draft-ietf-urnbis-ns-reg-transition-08.txt
	Pages : 10
	Date : 2017-07-01

Abstract:
The original registration procedure for formal Uniform Resource Name
(URN) namespaces required IETF Consensus. That requirement
discouraged some registrations and increased the risk for problems
that could occur as a result. The requirements have now been changed
by RFC 8141, which adopts a different model, focusing on encouraging
registration and publication of information for all appropriate
namespaces. This document clarifies the status of relevant older
RFCs and confirms and documents advice to IANA about selected
   existing registrations.

Hi.

Since Barry announced the WG Last Call on
draft-ietf-urnbis-ns-reg-transition-07, the new ISBN and ISSN
templates have been submitted, reviewed, and registered by IANA
(technically, they updated/ replaced the older ones). See the
registry,
https://www.iana.org/assignments/urn-namespaces/urn-namespaces.xhtml,
for more information.

As those who looked at it presumably noticed,
draft-ietf-urnbis-ns-reg-transition-07 contained a number of
placeholders, forward references, and "until the new templates
are ready and registered" language. I have now gone through it,
removed those comments, and generally adjusted the text to
reflect the current, more settled, situation. In the process,
I discovered and fixed a number of sentences that were
unnecessary difficult editorially and clarified several
statements about specific actions that affect updating or
obsolescence of exiting or earlier documents.

draft-ietf-urnbis-ns-reg-transition-08 has been posted to
reflect those changes, none of which change the document
substantively.

Happy July.
    john

The IESG has received a request from the Uniform Resource Names, Revised WG
(urnbis) to consider the following document: - 'Uniform Resource Name (URN)
Namespace Registration Transition'
  <draft-ietf-urnbis-ns-reg-transition-08.txt> as Proposed Standard

The IESG plans to make a decision in the next few weeks, and solicits final
comments on this action. Please send substantive comments to the
ietf@ietf.org mailing lists by 2017-07-17. Exceptionally, comments may be
sent to iesg@ietf.org instead. In either case, please retain the beginning of
the Subject line to allow automated sorting.

Abstract

The original registration procedure for formal Uniform Resource Name
(URN) namespaces required IETF Consensus. That requirement
discouraged some registrations and increased the risk for problems
that could occur as a result. The requirements have now been changed
by RFC 8141, which adopts a different model, focusing on encouraging
registration and publication of information for all appropriate
namespaces. This document clarifies the status of relevant older
RFCs and confirms and documents advice to IANA about selected
   existing registrations.

Someone sent me a URL for a posting at LinkedIn, and it seems to contain
an embedded URN:

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6288574073530388480/

I realize we're not the protocol police, but I'm curious if anyone has
looked into this before or knows someone in a technical capacity at
LinkedIn.

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for bringing this to my intention. I've modelled the
draft after previous URN RFC submissions based on RFC 2141 + 3406, are
there any RFCs following RFC 8141 that I can use as a basis for
restructuring my submission? I have been unable to find any at
https://www.iana.org/assignments/urn-namespaces/urn-namespaces.xhtml

I am especially struggling with the overall layout. I currently have these
chapters

Introduction
Specification Template
  Namespace ID
  Registration Information
  ...
Examples
Namespace Considerations
Community Considerations
Security Considerations
IANA Considerations

But in RFC 8141 all of these are put into a specification template.
What overall structure should I use? Should I just put everything into a
specification chapter?

Best
  Kasper

Hi Kaspar,

The two most recent registrations (ISBN and ISSN) follow the new
template, and they are excellent examples:

https://www.iana.org/assignments/urn-formal/isbn

https://www.iana.org/assignments/urn-formal/issn

By the way, you no longer need to submit an Internet-Draft, although
that is helpful for purposes of review.
