Hi Guys,

Litmus 0.12 added tests for locking unmapped urls. One of the tests is
failing for me, and I have a feeling it might be a bug in litmus, so I
wanted to ask here..

test 38: unmapped_lock
* LOCK /litmus/unmapped_url (i respond with 201 Created)
* DELETE /litmus/unmapped_url (i respond with 204 No Content)

test 39: unlock
* UNLOCK /litmus/unmapped_url

I fail the last unlock with 412 Precondition failed

Would 412 be the correct response in this case?

Thanks!
Evert

Shouldn't that be a 404?

Please post the full trace (a 412 is only correct if there's a
conditional header involved).

A 404 makes more sense, but that also made the litmus test fail. Here
are the relevant headers (took out the unneeded stuff)

LOCK /litmus/unmapped_url HTTP/1.1
Depth: 0
Timeout: Second-3600

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<lockinfo xmlns='DAV:'>
   <lockscope><exclusive/></lockscope>
   <locktype><write/></locktype><owner>litmus test suite</owner>
</lockinfo>

HTTP/1.1 201 Created
Lock-Token: opaquelocktoken:44445502-4fdd-85ab-b7ea-4f2b040acaac
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<d:prop xmlns:d="DAV:">
   <d:lockdiscovery>
     <d:activelock>
      <d:lockscope><d:exclusive /></d:lockscope>
      <d:locktype><d:write /></d:locktype>
      <d:depth>0</d:depth>
      <d:timeout>Second-1800</d:timeout>
      <d:locktoken>
       <d:href>opaquelocktoken:44445502-4fdd-85ab-b7ea-4f2b040acaac</
d:href>
      </d:locktoken>
      <d:owner>litmus test suite</d:owner>
     </d:activelock>
   </d:lockdiscovery>
</d:prop>

DELETE /litmus/unmapped_url HTTP/1.1
If: <http://sabredav.evertpot.com/litmus/unmapped_url>
(<opaquelocktoken:44445502-4fdd-85ab-b7ea-4f2b040acaac>)

HTTP/1.1 204 No Content

Now test 39 starts:

UNLOCK /litmus/unmapped_url HTTP/1.1
Lock-Token: <opaquelocktoken:44445502-4fdd-85ab-b7ea-4f2b040acaac>

I both tried responding with a 404, and a 412. Both fail the litmus
test. Would 404 be the appropriate response code here?

Hiya, yes, this is a litmus bug; it'll be fixed for the next release;
see this thread:

That list is not exhaustive. From
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc4918.html#rfc.section.9.11.1>:

"In addition to the general status codes possible, the following status
codes have specific applicability to UNLOCK:"

In general, when a client sends a request, and the server can't fulfill
it, it has to return an appropriate failure code, and *not* do something
else.

The timeout value is a special case, and that's why the spec says so.

In which case you need to fail the request, and then the client can
retry an exclusive lock.

That is not true. I personally have written a client that assumes that
success means success, and this works with all the servers I've tested
against back then (those that do support shared locks, and those that
don't).

Your interpretation is creative, but it would be your job to prove that
you're not introducing an interop problem for those clients that want
shared locks. (and you do).

> this distinction, and would only be aware that they were unable to lock

Yes, that's an example that misleading test suites can cause
implementors to make the wrong choices. Shared locks are optional, so
Litmus should just state that the server doesn't support them, instead
of misleading implementers to do the wrong thing.

> I real-world situations it would seem to me preferrable to grant a lock

Sorry, but that is nonsense.

If it doesn't make a difference, the client wouldn't have asked for a
shared lock in the first place. If it does make a difference, the client
would have either checked DAV:supportedlock first, and then made a
choice, or just tried and checked for the status code. This works today
with Apache/mod_dav, Slide, Jackrabbit, SAP KM, Xythos and Microsoft IIS.

Hi,

I've been working with the RFC Editor on the publication of this
specification, and some disagreements surfaced with respect how to cite
historic Internet Drafts, and what type of URLs are (or should be)
acceptable in an RFC. People interested in the discussion itself may
want to read the archives of the rfc-interest mailing list (starting
with
<http://mailman.rfc-editor.org/pipermail/rfc-interest/2008-October/000888.html>).

To get the issue resolved, I have moved the historic references to the
Contributors section, and changed the document URLs to use purl.org as
indirection mechanism (the RFC Editor was concerned with the stability
of URLs on www.webdav.org...).

So Section 1.1 now starts with:

1.1.  DASL

    This document defines Web Distributed Authoring and Versioning
    (WebDAV) SEARCH, an application of HTTP/1.1 forming a lightweight
    search protocol to transport queries and result sets that allows
    clients to make use of server-side search facilities. It is based on
    earlier work done in the IETF DASL Working Group (see Section 10).
    In this specification, the terms "WebDAV SEARCH" and "DASL" are used
    interchangeably. --
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/draft-reschke-webdav-search-latest.html#rfc.section.1.1>,

and the Contributors Section now reads:

10.  Contributors

    This document is based on prior work on the DASL protocol done by the
    WebDAV DASL working group until the year 2000 -- namely by Alan
    Babich, Jim Davis, Rick Henderson, Dale Lowry, Saveen Reddy, Surendra
    Reddy, and Judith Slein (see <http://www.webdav.org/dasl/> for the
    working group's web site,
    <http://purl.org/NET/webdav/dasl-references/reqs> for a requirements
    document, and
    <http://purl.org/NET/webdav/dasl-references/dasl-protocol-00> for an
    early version of the specification). --
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/draft-reschke-webdav-search-latest.html#rfc.section.10>

If somebody feels this change is not ok, or need to get re-reviewed by
the community, please speak up soon.

Best regards, Julian

Hi,

some while ago, the Atom feed format has introduced link relations that
either can use a short name (through an IANA registry), or a full URI as
identifier.
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-nottingham-http-link-header-02>
generalizes this concept, introducing a single registry for both (X)HTML
and Atom link relations, and also re-introduces the HTTP Link header
(defined in RFC 2068, but dropped from RFC 2616).

In WebDAV, we already have properties of type link implicitly (by
containing DAV:href elements). So, for instance, the DAV:checked-in
property defined in
<http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc3253.html#rfc.section.3.2.1>, could
be interpreted to also define a link relation identified by the URI
"DAV:checked-in".

Potential benefits:

1) Use in HTTP Link Header

A server could expose the property value in an HTTP response header,
independently of WebDAV:

HEAD /foobar HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Content-Type: text/plain
Link: </versions/foobar/1>; rel="DAV:checked-in"

2) Response bodies of WebDAV requests that affect the set of links could
be made more useful, such as in:

VERSION-CONTROL /foobar HTTP/1.1
Host: example.com

HTTP/1.1 201 OK
Content-Type: application/xml+xhtml
Content-Length: xxx

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
   <head>
     <title>Resource put under Version Control</title>
   </head>
   <body>
     <p>
       The resource has been put under version control; the
       version history is located at <a rel="DAV:version-history"
href="/histories/123">/histories/123</a>, and the initial version is <a
rel=DAV:checked-in" href="/versions/456">/versions/456</a>.
     </p>
   </body>
</html>

Open issue: WebDAV uses QNames to identify properties, and they do not
always map well to absolute URIs -- the simplest approach to address
this is by choosing namespace URIs wisely...

Feedback appreciated,

Julian

Hi,

WebDAV SEARCH has finally been published as RFC 5323 (a Proposed Standard).

ASCII versions can be found in the usual places, HTML and XML versions can be found at http://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/#rfc5323.

Best regards, Julian

Hi,

I just checked, and it appears my comments for draft -00 really haven't
been considered yet:
<http://www.ietf.org/mail-archive/web/vcarddav/current/msg00496.html>.
Please do so.

On reading -01, I found one other issue: when using extended MKCOL, is
it required to specify DAV:collection in the resource type? It appears
irrelevant (as the resource always will be a collection) -- I don't have
any specific preference, but it could be good to clarify that in order
to avoid interop problems.

Besides that, I found mainly editorial issues (sent privately to Cyrus),
such as:

1) too generic references (I prefer when a spec tells the reader which
secton to visit), and

2) RFC-Editor nits (unexpanded abbreviations, text talking about "this
proposal" instead of "this specification", Title Case in Section Titles)
-- I think it's good to have them resolved as early as possible -- the
less changes the RFC Editor needs to do, the better (speaking from
experience :-).

BR, Julian

Looks good to, except one minor issue: the WebDAV extensibility model
really is defined in Section 17 of RFC4918, not Appendix A. I recommend
to just borrow the relevant paragraphs from
<http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5323#section-1.4>.

Hi,

I have updated my "POST in WebDAV proposal".

At this point I think it's ready for an informal last call. From my
point of view the remaining questions are:

- is there sufficient community support for this justifying the put the
element names into the DAV: namespace?

and

- should I keep the sections that talk about the HTTP Link header (which
is currently being proposed in an I-D which may or may not be ready
before this proposal is ready)

BR, Julian

I support this draft, and believe the element names should be added into
the DAV: namespace.

I suggest removing the section that talks about the HTTP Link header, to
remove this dependency (or at least, marking it somehow as "to be removed
by editor if the HTTP Link I-D is not ready").

Cheers,
Geoff
